Variable vs. Invariable Some demonstratives can change

according to the noun’s gender or number, while others always stay the same. With this in
mind, we can split them in two groups:

Variable These must agree with the noun’s gender and number and are usually
followed by the noun. The variable demonstratives are este(s), esta(s), esse(s), essa(s),
aquele(s) and aquela(s).

➢ ESTE-ESTA - We use este and esta to talk about things

that are close to us. We usually have the adverb Aqui
with it.(We can use for people and objects)

1. Estes carros aqui são muito modernos./// These cars here

are very modern.
2. Este escritório é muito antigo aqui na cidade./// This office
is very old here in the city.
3. Este livro é muito interessante.// This book it is really
interesting.

➢ ESSE-ESSA- Esse and essa is used to talk about things

that are close to the people we are talking to. We can
use the adverb Aí with esse or essa.(We can use for people
and objects)

1. Esses documentos aí são importantes?//Are these

documents here important?

➢ AQUELE-AQUELA -We use aquele and aquela to

talk about things that are far from us. For these
demonstrative pronouns we can use the adverbs Ali
or Lá.

1. Aquelas praias lá são muito bonitas.//Those

beaches there are very beautiful.
2. Aqueles prédios são interessantes.//Those
buildings are interesting.
3. Aquela moça é muito simpática.//That lady is very
friendly.

Invariable These are the less specific, more general demonstratives, which do
not have gendered or plural forms. The invariable demonstratives are isto, isso, and aquilo.
We use them:
❏ ISTO,ISSO,AQUILO
These are the less specific, more general demonstratives, which do not have gendered or
plural forms. The invariable demonstratives are isto, isso, and aquilo. We use them:

1. When we don’t know what the object is (and therefore don’t know if it’s
masculine or feminine to assign one of the variable pronouns)

2. When we simply want to go straight to the point and shorten the

sentence:

➢ Isto é teu?---This is yours? instead of Este casaco é teu?//This coat is yours?

3. When talking about ideas or situations in a more abstract way:

➢ Isto é inaceitável//This is unacceptable

➢ Obrigado pelo presente. Isto é excelente!////Thank you for the gift. This is excellent!
➢ Ela viu o acidente. Aquilo foi horrível.//// She saw the accident. that was horrible.
