ABSTRACT
For a house to be built quickly and reasonably, the formwork system that is
chosen is essential. Approximately 35–40% of the expense for each RCC
member is spent on formwork. Learn about conventional and aluminum
formwork in this review article. This review article compares the time, cost, and
quality characteristics of aluminum formwork versus conventional formwork.
Aluminum formwork produces affordable homes in the shortest amount of
time. Plaster is not necessary for the superior quality walls and slabs produced
by aluminum formwork.
The aim of this article is to review various selection types of formworks which
done from 35 articles with focus on comparisons conventional and modern
formworks to select the best formwork for constructions.
For the selected articles’ adopted methodology has been used to review a list of
companies. Review and identify sample methods, data & analysis of selected
projects time, cost, based on the given parameters analysis of selected articles.
From the reviewed articles’ results, the cost of construction with convectional
formwork increases as compared to the Modern. As well as duration of
construction in modern formwork is less than Conventional Method by almost
28% and 36 days. A conventional formwork method produces 30% more waste
than a Modern-system formwork method. As a result, a modest home project is
suited for conventional formwork, whereas for projects involving high-rise
construction and mass housing, aluminum formwork is appropriate.

1. INTRODUCTION
In the whole world, the construction industry is one of the biggest industries.
The Construction industry affects GDP growth rate by 11% (2015). Formwork
plays an important role in building construction, so make the right decision in
choosing between different type of formwork. Formwork consists of about 35-
40% of the cost required for any RCC member. (Elbeltagi et al., 2011)

In the present scenario, the construction mainly comprises high-rise buildings

to save space and time. (Krawczyńska-Piechna, 2017). Two major pillars of
construction are formwork and equipment. Formwork provides the proper
space for placing the fresh concrete to mold according to the desired shape and
it also supports the freshly placed concrete until it gains its strength to carry
its self-weight along with the designed weight to be carried by the concrete.
(Rajeshkumar & Sreevidya, 2019). The formwork holds the major shareholder
of the cost of construction. A good quality formwork should have the following
specifications, such as it should be highly durable, rigid and have a higher
strength to withstand the loads imposed on it during assembling and also
while carrying concrete over it. Along with the above-mentioned points, it
should be easily handled by the workers and it should be economical.(Safarik
et al., 2018).The top ten factors identified as having a significant impact on
formwork material selection are the accessibility to work, quality, surface
finish, storage of formwork, capital cost, safety, layout of structures, lifespan,
exposure to environment and labor cost.(Sohoni & Jha, 2020) In earlier days
only, wooden formworks were used in construction but now-a-days different
kinds of materials are introduced to create new formwork technology.(Safa et
al., 2016) Newly invented formwork technologies available in the market are
table formwork system, Aluminum formwork system, MS formwork system,
Slip-form technology, Plastic formwork, FRP formwork system. Different
companies like PERI, DOKA, MIVAN, KUMKANG, RMD, and PLASTECH are
working very prominently in the production of such kind of formwork
technology.(Rajeshkumar et al., 2021)

1.1 FORMWORK
Formwork is defined as the temporary structure provided to mold the concrete
in the desired shape and to hold the concrete until it gets hardened to carry the
imposed loads on it. Formwork plays an important role in the construction
industry because, industry formwork should be taken care of carefully, since
it’s a simple way to avoid any misalignments, misplacements of the concrete
structure. Proper formwork and work planning could reduce the cost of
construction and also help in completing the construction on time.(Mistry,
2021) Accidents may happen in construction practices if the suitable formwork
was not used and no proper care is taken while assembling and stripping. It is
crucial to take care of the formwork selection during the construction process.
(Sohoni & Jha, 2020)

1.2 NEED OF REVIWED ARTICLES
The selection of formwork has a huge impact on high rise building structures
in terms of quality, efficiency and also on the project cost. It is necessary to
have a piece of deep knowledge to selecting the formwork which suits the
planned project effectively. Thus, this review focuses on the factors responsible
for selecting the rational formwork in construction. Knowing the factors for
selection would help us to control the cost and quality of the works. The
reviewed articles emphasis on the factors that influence selecting one type of
formwork. It will be better to know the factors to be considered before selecting
one formwork rather than selecting one with no proper understanding.
(Terzioglu & Polat, 2022)

1.3 OBJECTIVES
The main objective of this review of articles is
 To identify the key parameters governing the selection of different
formwork systems.
 To review on 35 journals will be evaluated, with an emphasis on the
traditional and modern formwork systems.

2.LITERATURE REVIEW:
2.1 Conventional Formwork and modern formworks
Review literature have been done on the effective selection of formworks among
35 articles reviewed as the following.

Table 1:Articles Reviewed

No. METHODS ON OBSERVED CHANGES SOURC
1 convectional Having reviewed conventional formwork is one of oldest (Shin e
types which is used in the construction. This type of 2012)
formworks
formwork is mostly used in the construction of two to
three-story buildings which use timber, bamboo, masonry
and carpentry in this formwork construction. This type of
formwork is suitable for small construction works with
two to three-stories buildings and still, they are in use for
such constructions. However, this formwork is not
suitable for high rise building construction. The cost of
this formwork is less and it also has low weight and it
does not give a smooth surface finish and it requires
skilled labor and it takes a lot of time to fix and de-
shutter.
2 Modern Conventional I have reviewed semi-convectional formworks. The method (Jin &
Form Work (Plywood is more advantageous when compared to the previous one Gamba
Form Work with Steel since it uses steel props instead of wood to support the 2020)
Frame) formwork and plywood sheets are used for beam, slab and
column shutters.
The cost of formwork and it requires less skilled labor are
some of the advantages of this formwork for the poor
surface finish of the concrete surface and this formwork
requires a lot of labours for fixing and de - shuttering are

Page 6
some of the disadvantages of this formwork.
3. Convection form work Having done steel formwork is used in construction work (Krawcz
(steel formwork) where a greater number of repetitions of formwork is Piechna
needed. It is more efficient than the other two formworks. 2017)
It is fabricated with thin steel plates stiffened along the
edges. The panels can be fabricated in any desired shape
and size according to the need for construction. This
formwork is suitable for circular and curved structures. It
is mostly used in large construction projects. When
compared to conventional and plywood formwork, it will
not absorb water from concrete which placing. This is
considered to be more advantageous. It also reduces labor
utilization and this formwork needs proper maintenance
and the weight of the formworks are some of the
disadvantages of this formwork.
4 Conventional and Studied rendered Reinforced Concrete model in a (Lee et a
Semi-conventional multistory and put a high stress concentration on it, they 2021)
method claim that the outer shell of the monolithic framework had
a shear wall from experimental finite element approach
(FEM analysis); it was less prone to cracks in the building.
Compared to traditional construction, they offer the
highest seismic efficiency at a low price.
5 CONENTIONA FORM Price research was carried out with the old method and (Martin
WORKS the new formwork framework. It allows you to realize that al., 201
the conventional and monolithic form is simpler and
faster. Interview questionnaires and case studies were
used to collect study results. The mathematical’ t-test'
showed that the expense reduction for conventional
design systems varied greatly from the form system.
6 MODERN FORM WORK I have studied aluminum formwork that is lighter than (Mistry,
(aluminum /mivan steel formwork This formwork can be used for more than
formwork) 100 repetitions. This formwork is mostly used in a similar
type of structure. This formwork is mostly referred to in
high rise building construction.
Explained construction is one of the main industries and
an important part of the Indian economy. It is also an
important parameter in the development of the country.
India is desperately preparing for the rapid development
and formation of housing units for economical
construction facilities. Formwork facilitates the
construction and construction of essential elements and
components of any construction facility needed to be
strong and efficient in the management of the structure.
In contrast, because of the successful completion of an
especially repetitive mass project, Mivan is developing a
new construction technology. The cost and time of
comparing Mivan technology with conventional coining
technology were discussed in this paper. Mivan technology
is useful and efficient with cost, quality and time savings
compared to conventional technology.

Page 7
7 MODERN FORM WORK have done a comparative study on the merits and (Rajesh
(aluminum /mivan demerits of the conventional timber formwork and et al., 2
formwork) aluminum formwork. The various factors which are
included in this study are cost, time and quality of
the formworks. The studies mentioned the various
types of components used in aluminum © 2018

Research (JETIR) www.jetir.org 677 formworks. This
study shows slab cycle time for aluminum formwork
is 10 days while conventional formwork slab cycle
time is 21 days. This study mentioned that the
overall cost of the project using aluminum formwork
is less than using the conventional formwork.

8 MODERN FORM WORK Have studied in the analysis the suitability of (Rajesh
(aluminum /mivan modular aluminum formwork technology in a framed & Sreev
formwork) structure by considering the quality, speed of 2019)
construction, labor requirement, cost of construction
and other factors. They have conducted a study on a
project in Banglore, Karnataka, India, namely
Salarpuria Sattva Divinity, which comprises of a
commercial building (2B+G+5) and ten residential
towers (G+21). A comparative study in between the
Conventional RCC Framed Structure, Aluminum
Formwork on RCC Framed Structure and Mivan
Structure. The research defines the advantages and
limitations of using modular Aluminum Formwork.
9 MODERN FORM WORK have done a comparative study on different types of (Safa et
(aluminum /mivan formwork utilized in the construction industry. This 2016)
formwork) study shows the advantages and disadvantages of
different types of formwork used in construction
project. This study gives the method of selecting the
best suitable formwork for the building. A
questionnaire survey was conducted on 22 major
companies, like L&T, SPRE, GDCL, NCC etc.
Comparative study of formwork is based on various
factors like cost, quality, safety, cycle time etc.
10 MODERN FORM WORK Have done a study on the comparison between the (Safarik
(aluminum /mivan Conventional and Mivan Formwork. In this, a 2018)
formwork) comparison has been done on the cost and duration
factors of the formwork. The estimated duration of
aluminum formwork is 98 days to complete the first
floor, while the conventional formwork took 167 days
to complete the first floor. In this study, construction

Page 8
cost is higher in Mivan formwork than in the
Conventional formwork. Mivan formwork duration is
almost 25% less than the conventional formwork.

11 MODERN FORM WORK I Have done a case study, in Godrej Garden City (Sohoni
(aluminum /mivan located in Jagatpur, Ahmedabad, which is Jha, 20
formwork) constructed using aluminum formwork. In this
project, two types of aluminum formwork are used
which are Kumkang Aluminum formwork and Mivan
aluminum formwork. According to this study,
aluminum, the formwork saves duration and cost of
the construction work. Due to the light weight of
aluminum formwork is labor-friendly and easy to
handle. Aluminum Formwork gives better surface
finishes, so no need for plaster.

12 MODERN FORM WORK have studied aluminum formwork used in HighRise (Terziog
(aluminum /mivan building construction. This study gives the current Polat, 2
formwork) existing formwork system used in mass housing
construction in Tamil Nadu. This study is based on
the project duration, project cost and quality of work
affected due to the type of formwork used. A
comparative study of conventional and aluminum
formwork has been done. The floor cycle of aluminum
formwork in this study is 7 to 10 days. Aluminum
formwork is a 100% recyclable material, so it saves
the environment and reduces tree cutting.

In summary, an understanding of formwork comparison and selection factor

from various selected articles is essential for quick selection of an appropriate
formwork system for building construction. Conventional formwork is one of
the oldest types which is used in construction. This type of formwork is mostly
used in the construction of two to three-story buildings. In contrast, modern
formwork, which is aluminum formworks, is lighter than convectional
formwork. This formwork can be used for more than 100 repetitions. Thus,
aluminum formwork is mostly used for high rise building construction.

Figure 1:Connectional Vs Modern Formworks

Figure 2:Connectional & Modern Formworks

Based on the result of this research using a high rise building, a typical floor
area of preliminary conclusion can be stated that:

1. Cost of construction with convectional formwork increases cost by

169,931,458 as compared to the Modern formwork (Aluminum
formworks). Cost of construction per. Sq. ft in MIVAN is as high as 38 %
compared to the Conventional Method.
2. The time table of Construction of MIVAN is less than the Conventional
method by almost 28% and 36 days.
3. A conventional formwork method produces 30% more waste than a
Modern-system formwork method.
According to the above discussion points, it is quite clear that construction by
MIVAN formwork is quite more expensive than the Conventional Method.
However, it can save a considerable amount of time in the construction of high

Page 12
rise buildings. Also, much of the finishing work is saved in Mivan, which
includes plastering (both internal and external), brickwork etc.

3.3 Weakness, strength and gap
Weakens

• Most of the articles reviewed have no clearly described research

questions.

• Sample sizes in most articles are not represented when compared to the
standards.

• Some articles reviewed put simply their results on charts and graphs
without a given sample data and have no clear methodology.

Strength

• Most of the selected articles clearly described the abstract, keywords

introduction, conclusion and references.

• Most researchers achieve their goals by finding the answer to the

objectives.

• Most articles are recent and have the contents of reviewed articles.

• Some articles are used. A mixed approach (qualitative and quantitative)

has been used.

Gap

• Further investigation into technologies and models used to increase

formwork productivity.

• Its initial cost and setup time is higher than conventional formwork.

• Skilled labor is required.

• It is not economic if the number of repetitions is less.

Page 14
CONCLUSION
1.Formwork is defined as the temporary structure provided to mold the

member is spent on formwork. Learn about conventional and aluminum
formwork in this review article. This review article compares the time, cost, and
quality characteristics of aluminum formwork versus conventional formwork.

This result is based on a questionnaire survey with the clients, contractors,

consultants and other expected members and provides decision-making
support for them in understanding of what critical factors influencing the
selection of formwork systems in high rise buildings.

3. Conventional formwork system are mostly adopted throughout the world but
they cost more time and costly in construction projects. Conventional formwork
is not suitable where the population is large, less land available and
construction project work is required speedily.

4. From the above analysis, MIVAN formwork is the highly rated formwork
system, because of its higher number of reputations in use, with a smooth and
exact surface finish which brings down overall cost and also provides superior
quality types of structures with less time. In the case of non-repetitive and
availability of less labor and improper feasibility with site and storage area
restrictions, wood formwork is preferred to MIVAN formworks.

5. Further investigation in to technologies and models to use increase

productivity formwork.

6. It will be better to know the factors to be considered before selecting one

formwork rather than selecting one with no proper understanding.
