7. BACKGROUND OF DAMAGE.

According to the skipper, during their voyage of about 1 month from Indonesia to
Seychelles they had difficulty controlling their rudders. On one occasion the
autopilot broke down because of the inconsistency in control. The alarm was always
sounding whenever autopilot was engaged. This had to be replaced entirely because
of a lack of spares. At one point the vessel did not have autopilot for two weeks. At
another instance there was no steering for 2 days.

8. DAMAGE FOUND

PORT SIDE RUDDER

- Rudder shaft(aluminum) has an over lay of GRP applied
- Upon removal of GRP, deep pittings up to 1.5mm deep observed on the shaft
nearer the rudder
- s/s sleeve installed on shaft in area of bearing contact found cracked in
longitudinal manner approximately 2 inches
- Needle bearing in through hull loose/worn and without lubrication

STARBOARD SIDE RUDDER

- GRP overlay on shaft
- deep pitting and scaling of aluminum shaft upon removal of GRP layer
- s/s sleeve installed on shaft in area of bearing contact found cracked at
several locations in a vertical manner
- Needle bearing of through hull worn
- Needle bearings collapsed upon removal of shaft from through hull

10. SURVEYOR’S COMMENT AND ANALYSIS

Upon inspection of the rudders while the vessel was still afloat, knocking sounds were
heard emanating from the securing positions of both rudders with the starboard rudder
exhibiting the loudest knocks.
Once the vessel was put on the dry, the rudders were dropped and the damages were
revealed..
GRP layer was observed on both rudder shafts. Once these were removed, the shafts
were observed to be severely pitted with sections as deep as 1.5mm. IT is apparent that
the shafts had once been removed but not repaired satisfactorily. Instead GRP was
applied to cover the pittings and lock the s/s sleeve in position. stainless steel sleeve
was also observed on the section of the shaft exposed to the through hull bearing. The
sleeves were both observed to be cracked and showing signs of corrosion
The through hull bearings were observed dry and worn. The starboard side needle
bearings collapsed upon removal of the shaft.
Inspection by the Engineering staff of taylorsmith boat yard found that the hydraulic
steering system for the rudders were not properly bled and thus was not functioning
correctly. The distance the system has been installed, according to the Engineers is too
far from the steering and thus during turning one rudder is moving more distance than
the other, thus the reason for damaging the autopilot.

11. REPAIR

- Rudder shafts have been coated with new laminate and epoxy applied
- Rudder bearings and bush have been replaced
- Install new autopilot (completed)
- Hydraulic system for steering has been relocated, bled and re-alligned

12. CAUSE OF DAMAGE

1. Wasted propeller shaft not attended to initially
2. Hydraulic system for steering not properly installed
3. Rudder bearings worn and damaged

13. CONCLUSION
The hydraulic system installed for the rudders were not properly bled and the distance
for conrtol not properly calculated leading to the controls varying in distance.
A secondary issue is the failure to rectify the pittings on the shaft and replacing the
rudder bearings allowed for the further deterioration of the bearings and shaft thus
causing the rudder to fluctuate while in operation.

14. REPAIR ACCOUNT

- Taylor smith boat yard Rs 116,837.48
- Jean Marc (installation of autopilot) Rs 6,000.00
- Marcus Michaud (sale of autopilot) Rs 65,000.00

TOTAL Rs 187,837.48
