International means
• Existing, occurring or carried on between two or more nations.
• Global, worldwide.
• English as a global language or “lingua Franca”.
• Lingua franca is a language used as a form of communication
between two groups who do not speak the same language.
A. More than 350 million people - first language.
B. 430 million- second language

How did English reach this kind of status?


• The role of United States of America, as a global super power but
the states set earlier than that.

• In the 16 Century England started to establish overseas colonies

and by the end of 18 Century the British Empire had grown quite
extensive.
• The Dutch had also colonized the area of New Netherlands. It was

lost to the British in the Late 17 century.
• There were also non-British immigrants to the British colonies of
North America like German speaking immigrants.
• While there were numerous languages spoken by settlers, English
became the dominant language in the United States.
• In 1920’s the British Empire covered almost a quarter of the earth
and about 1/5 of the Worlds population.
• Some of these countries became populated by English settlers.
• English was not the only colonial language gaining a foothold
throughout the world but along with French and Spanish, it was
the main ones.
• English began to surpass French in the 20th Century.
• After the War, the Treaty of Versailles was written not only in
French but also in English, this signifies as the language of
diplomacy.
• It was after the WWII when English really began to develop into
the main global lingua Franca as the United States Developed
more fully into a world Superpower.
• The United States military maintains the presence of Europe to
assist in reconstruction efforts.

• This is largely because of the English language mass media, as well as


English as a Second language course now being a part of the school
curriculum in many countries.

Soviet Union
One of the last remaining obstacles to English truly becoming
the world language was the USSR during the cold war.
The ultimate collapse of the USSR result in a decline in Russia.

Importance of English in school


A. The main language for studying any subject
all over the world.
B.Important for students as it broadens their
minds, develops emotional skills, improve the
quality of life by providing job opportunities.

C.Growing with time because it is the only


medium for communication In many countries.

D. Used widely in the literature and media


section to publish books, most of the writers
write in the English language due to the vast
majority of the readers know only the English
language and they can describe their ideas best
in the English language.
Importance of good English in business.
 Shows your willingness to go beyond basic
business standards.
 Help you to communicate better with your
colleagues.
 Delivering presentations and speeches.
 Good pronunciation always makes a good first
impression.
 Allows you to travel.
 Gives you an edge in other jobs as well.
 Finally, it allows you to express yourself in a
language that everyone understands.
