toward others; softness, understanding and proper conducts. Humanities bring
enlightenment enjoyment and stimulation in searching individual identity; the act of
discovery is in itself reward of accomplishment. Humanities are based on the philosophical
view of humanism that stresses “Man is the measure of all things”.
The etymology of the term humanities emphasizes its connection with man. The
word “humanus” and “humanities” are came from the Latin stem homin (homo, hominen,
referring to man). Humanities maybe defined as the study of man’s nature, his culture and
the evolution of his thinking and ideas, his aspirations and ideals, acquired through the
examination of his works by historical analysis.
HUMANITIES- It came from the Latin word “HUMANUS” which means refined, culture and
human.
Refined -Norms, being civilize, and socialize
Cultured- Adaptation to environment (social interaction, norms)
Human- the nature of people, being a person

The Nature of Humanities

In the west, the study of humanities can be traced to ancient Greece as the basis of a
broad education for citizens. During Roman times, the concept of the seven liberal arts
evolved, involving grammar, rhetoric and logic (the trivium), along the arithmetic ,
geometry, astronomy and music (the quadrivium). These subjects formed the majority of
medieval education with the emphasis being on humanities as skills or “ways of doing”

A major shift occurred during the Renaissance, when humanities began to be

regarded to be studied rather that practiced. Algebra, English, Literature and Biology under
the medieval period classes are considered humanities classes. Humanities during digital
age, language and literature are considered to be the central topics in humanities, so the
impact of the electronic communication is of great concern to those in the field. Despite the
fact that humanities will have to adapt rapidly to those changes, it is unlikely that the
traditional forms of arts will completely abandon.
II. Humanities in the Digital Age
“Language and literature are considered to be the central topics in humanities, so the
impact of electronic communication is of great concern to those in field. The immediacy of
modern technology and internet speeds up communication, but may threaten “deferred”
forms of communication such as literature and “dumb down” language. The library is also
changing rapidly as bookshelves are replaced by computer terminals. Despite the fact that
humanities will have to adapt rapidly to these changes, it is unlikely that the traditional
forms of arts will be completely abandoned.

III. Meaning of Humanities

The etymology of the term humanities emphasizes its connection with man. The
word “humanus” and “humanities” are from stem homin (homo, hominem, referring to
man). Unlike biological and physical sciences, emphasizing on the physical aspects of man
and of nature, and are concerned with observable facts and the discovery of universal
truths, the humanities deals with the branches of study pertaining to cultural achievements
of man. Humanities may be defined as the study of the man’s culture, his culture, the
evolution of his thinking and ideas, his aspirations and ideals, acquired through examination
of his works by historical analysis.
“Humanities” is a term used, along with social sciences and natural sciences to
indicate one of the three divisions of learning. Broadly, humanities usually include literature,
languages, history, philosophy, art, music and theology. It is based on the philosophical view
of humanism (humanism is a term describing the intellectual attitude of the Rennaisance
which, in contrast to the middle ages, focused on the human being and life in this world. It
emphasized human dignity and perfectibility and stressed the importance of a well-rounded
education based on the literature of Ancient Greece and Rome, as these embodied the
humanists’ ideal) that stresses the dictum of Protagoras, a Greek philosopher, that “man is
the measure of all things,” implying that the humanities course where appreciation of arts
can be strengthened because the artists convey their thoughts, beliefs, values, and feelings
through the visual arts, literary arts, dance and music.
The word “humanities” contains the word “human”. Thus, we could define
humanities as the study of how humans have expressed themselves through the arts
throughout history. Expressing oneself through the arts is one of the earliest and most basic
human activities. It is one very important way that humans reveal their values, insights and
priorities. Some authors call this the “way-of-the-arts-approach”. According to this
approach, by studying the arts, we uncover the values represented in them, and in the
process, deepen our understanding of our own values and of human experience in general.

IMPORTANCE OF STUDYING HUMANITIES

a. Provides man thorough knowledge of his history and his cultural tradition. Man
become aware and understands his cultural development.
b. Helps man acquire the values and wisdom that are essential for human survival and
progress. Man is able to understand and appreciate those measures of human
greatness and refine his taste and judgment.
c. Humanities serve to provide the student with certain skills and values through the
arts. Students learn to appreciate the importance of value that no other subject can
describe those values which are directly an exact.
d. Humanities helps man develop critical thinking , which is important in his every
everyday life by exposing him to varied concepts, ideas and forms that man has
created.
e. Critical thinking enables man to form sound judgment and make wise decisions. Man
learns to reason and analyze, to question and to argue.

What is an Art?

ART
Derived from Latin word “ARS” means ability or skills. Art also refers to any object,
thing or procedure, which expresses feelings and sentiments, ideas, imagination, anything
which shows skills in using materials, techniques and procedure. It is a medium of expression
because through arts we express our ideas, emotions, feelings, without using words.
Art is something we do, a verb. Art is an expression of our thoughts, emotions,
intuitions, and desires, but it is even more personal than that: it’s about sharing the way we
experience the world, which for many is an extension of personality. It is the communication
of intimate concepts that cannot be faithfully portrayed by words alone. And because words
alone are not enough, we must find some other vehicle to carry our intent. But the content
that we instill on or in our chosen media is not in itself the art. Art is to be found in how the
media is used, the way in which the content is expressed.
In more specialized sense, art applies to such activities that express aesthetic
ideas by the use of skills and imagination in the creation of objects, environment and
experiences which can be shared with others. In this sense we can say, we are involved in art
work when we plan, design and construct houses artistically. Art applies in different
activities that express aesthetic ideas by the use of skill and imagination in the creation of
objects.

Briefly we can have the following points:

1. Art is derived from the Latin word “ars” meaning ability or skill. It covers those areas of
artistic creativity that seek to communicate beauty primarily through the senses.
2. Art applies to such activities that express aesthetics ideas by the use of skill and
imagination in the creation of objects, environment and experiences which can be shared
with others.
3. A work of art is a record of a particular artists view. It shows something that has seen, felt
and thought of a recorded as an arrangement of designs, colors, lines and tones.
4. A work of art is a product of artist unique personality influenced unconsciously by factors
such as his environment, traditions, national traits, religious beliefs, economic conditions, his
ideals or even the climate or geography.
5. The arts that we perceive through our eyes are called visual arts, it involves painting,
architecture and sculpture, but it also includes things such as clothes and household
appliances.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ART

The arts constitute one of the oldest and most important means of expression developed by
human being.

THE VALUE OF ART

What’s an artwork worth? How does an artwork become valuable? What are
the benefits of art? The job of the artist is to awaken that eye. Vision is our great sensory
source of information, and creating art sharpens our visual acuity, and fosters the discipline
necessary to evoke feelings and ideas and appreciate the sight of everyday life. Anyone can
find value in making art as fun, magical, and a simulating vehicle for self-discovery and
experimentation. Art appreciation is a process of give and take. Its value is realized moment
by moment as one looks at an artwork. As a viewer, you bring to it the experience and
perspective of your whole life.

Work of Art
Work of art is something that is considered to have aesthetic value, something
that is beautiful, intriguing, interesting, creative or extremely well done. This refers to a thing
of beauty possessing aetheticity or obra maestra.

FACTORS AFFECTING THE WORK OF THE ARTIST

1. Style
It is the common denominators of subject matter, treatment and emphasis. It is also
a particular way in which something is created and performed.
2. Historical Factors
Most artistic creations of any period have certain traits in common. When an artist
searches for new perceptions, he is tied to the world around him.

3. Geographical Factors
Artist are conditioned by their locality and nationality
4. Political, Psychological, and Sociological Factors
Political system and social patterns contribute to changes in style.
5. Technical Factors
The importance of techniques has been over emphasized in the past. The availability
of materials greatly affects the artist.

THE DIVISION OF ART

Art is so broad that we shall divide it into two groups the commercial art and
the art for art’s sake:
1. Commercial Art
In commercial art the artists are commercially motivated if they deliberately
cater to the taste of the buyers and if the artwork is determined by consideration of
salability. A commercial artist primarily aims to please, satisfy and sell the intended buyers of
his production. He should possess excellent craftsmanship and adjust his designs according
to the requirements of the buyer. In this category artist have no independent concepts to
convey but are mere technicians who skillfully render taste or passion to create them. (e.g
Fashion designer, graphic artist and industrial designer)
2. Art for Art’s Sake
The artist aimed is for personal expression and satisfaction of the creator or the
artist. The artist creates work of art for the love of it and follows no one but himself. Buyers
patronize his work because they like the art works and the ideas of the artist. “This group
states that art exist only for itself.”
