OPERATING PROCEDURE

TURBINE After completing this course, participants able to:

PROCEDURE • State the function of warnings, cautions and notes
• Describe the prestart walk around check
• Describe the system power up procedure

TURBINE • Observe All Safety Requirements
• Check that all caps and plugs have been removed from fuel, oil
OPERATING  and engine vent lines before starting the engine
PROCEDURE • Check for oil or fuel leakage around engine; if present,
determine and eliminate cause
• Check that engine air inlet screen and filters are clear and that
no material is nearby which might be drawn into inlet
• Check that exhaust system is unobstructed and that no
flammable material is close to any part of ducting
• Visually check security of all self‐locking nuts, capscrews and
other fasteners
• Check all electrical connection for tightness, corrosion and
condition of insulation. Check wires and harnesses for
satisfactory condition

TURBINE • Check all lines and hoses for chafing. Check grommets and clamps
for deterioration
OPERATING  • Remove any dust, ice or other material which may be obstructing
PROCEDURE air intakes and vents
• Bleed all drains making certain that no obstruction exists in drain
ports and lines
• Check compressor header manual block valves to ensure correct
position for start
• Check compressor headers and lines to ensure no gas or
flammable vapours can leak into area
• Verify the oil level in oil tank indicates full
• On units with pneumatic starter, check oil level in lubricators
• Check that seal oil and servo oil filter differential pressure
indicator buttons are down 4

• If duplex oil filters are used, verify that selector lever is in the
TURBINE applicable position
OPERATING  • Verify, especially during cold conditions, that all oil tank heaters
are functioning properly and that oil is not congealed
PROCEDURE • Check oil cooler for obstruction or contamination, check for leaks
• Check position of guide vane and bleed valve linkages; guide
vanes should be in minimum open position and bleed valve
should be fully open
• Check battery charger for proper operation; verify connection to
customer furnished Vac supply
• Check batteries for correct polarity of 24 Vdc connections; ensure
batteries maintain full charge
• Verify the circuit breakers on battery charger assembly are in ON
position
• Open main fuel supply valve and check for adequate fuel supply 5
pressure

• Observe All Safety Requirements
TURBINE • Open control console access door and verify that control system
OPERATING  circuit breakers are closed (ON)
PROCEDURE • Press LAMP TEST switch to verify indicator and switch lights
operation
• Press LOCAL pushbutton momentarily
• Momentarily press RESET switch to reset malfunction relays
• Record reading of ENGINE HOURS and NUMBER OF STARTS
• Verify that compressor YARD VALVE indicators are in required
position as follows;
• VALVE SEQUENCE – AUTO
• PURGE/LOADING VALVE – CLOSED
• RECYCLE VALVE – CLOSED
• VENT VALVE – OPEN
• SUCTION VALVE – CLOSED 6
• DISCHARGE VALVE ‐ CLOSED

TURBINE • Momentarily press RESET pushbutton switch
• If system is normal, READY indicator light and OK indicator
OPERATING  lights on vibration monitor illuminate
PROCEDURE • Press START pushbutton switch momentarily
• READY indicator lamp (UNIT READY) illuminates
• Fuel valve test sequence takes place
• The backup post lube pump turns on and pressure increases
to 6 psig. When this pressure is reached, the backup post lube
pump stops and the auxiliary lube pump starts. The gas
compressor dry seal system is activated for operation and oil
pressure increases rapidly to 6 psi
• Compressor recycle valve closes; RECYCLE VALVE OPEN status
indicator extinguishes, TRANSIT indicator illuminates briefly
then extinguishes and CLOSED indicator illuminates 7

• Compressor purge valve opens to begin purge cycle; PURGE VALVE
TURBINE CLOSED indicator extinguishes, TRANSIT indicator illuminates briefly
OPERATING  then extinguishes and OPEN indicator illuminates
PROCEDURE • After compressor purge cycle, vent valve closes and compressor
case begins to pressurize. VENT VALVE indicator extinguishes,
TRANSIT indicator illuminates briefly then extinguishes and CLOSED
indicator illuminates
• When DP across suction valve decreases below preselected set
point, compressor suction valve, discharge valve and recycle valve
open; applicable valve position indicators illuminate
• After suction, discharge and recycle valves open, starter begins to
crank the engine to 15% speed. After purge timer times out the
primary gas valve opens. The torch solenoid and ignitor are
energized and the light off ramp is activated

TURBINE • Starter continues to accelerate engine, light‐off occurs and
OPERATING  turbine temperature increases. At 350 oF torch fuel valve closes
and ignition is shut off. IGNITION indicator extinguishes and
PROCEDURE LIGHT‐OFF indicator illuminates
• Engine‐driven lube oil pump pressure increases to 35 psi
• Engine attains 60 % gas producer speed; start system shutdown.
START CRANK indicator and LIGHT‐OFF indicator extinguish.
RUNNING indicator and READY TO LOAD indicator illuminate.
NUMBER OF STARTS counter registers a successful start and
ENGINE HOURS begins to log operating time and the auxiliary
lube pump shuts off
• Engine speed increase and stabilizes at purge speed and on load
indicator illuminates

TURBINE • Operate the engine at idle speed for approximately 3
OPERATING  minutes or until temperature and pressures stabilize. Record
PROCEDURE temperatures, pressures and vibration levels and check
against established norms; if an abnormal condition exists,
shut down engine and determine cause
• Increase engine gas producer speed by pressing engine
SPEED SETTING‐INCREASE switch until desired speed set
point is obtained
• Gas producer and Power turbine speed is indicated on the CRT
“Operation Summary”, Temperature Summary” and “vibration”
display screens. Observe both values for proper indications. Do not
exceed maximum speed

TURBINE • At approximately 78% Ngp, bleed valve begins to close and is
fully closed at approximately 80% speed
OPERATING  • At approximately 80% Ngp, variable inlet guide vanes start to
PROCEDURE open and are fully open at approximately 92.5% Ngp
• At a purge speed of approximately 90% gas producer speed, gas
compressor recycle valve closes. RECYCLE VALVE OPEN indicator
extinguishes and RECYCLE VALVE CLOSED indicator illuminates. ON
LOAD indicator illuminates. Start sequence is complete and
compressor set is on line

TURBINE • Should be performed each time compressor set is started
OPERATING  to verify normal operation
PROCEDURE • Record speeds, pressures, temperatures and vibration
levels for comparison with established norms. Observe
required illumination of switches and lights.

SOLAR GAS  • SHUT DOWN PROCEDURE
TURBINE • The compressor set may be shut down by malfunction
OPERATING  shutdown, emergency shutdown or normal shutdown
PROCEDURE • Malfunction shutdown,
• Detection of an abnormal equipment operating condition
• Lockout category, the malfunction be cleared and the control
system reset by pressing the RESET pushbutton switch
• Non lockout category, usually of a self‐correcting nature (e.g.
overspeed) and restart may be perfomed without reset action
• Emergency shutdown
• Manually by pressing the EMERGENCY STOP switch at the
turbine control panel or the auxiliary switch located on the skid
mounted gage panel
• A fast stop and lockout condition 14

TURBINE • Normal shutdown,
OPERATING  • Manually by pressing the NORMAL STOP switch at the turbine
engine control panel
PROCEDURE • A cooldown and non‐lockout cycle

• Press NORMAL STOP switch momentarily


• COOLDOWN indicator light illuminates
• Engine operation continues for 5 minutes on a no‐load cooldown cycle
• 5 minutes after NORMAL STOP switch was pressed, cooldown
cycle times out
• COOLDOWN indicator light extinguishes and STOPPING indicator light
illuminates
• Primary and secondary fuel valve close, combustion ceases and engine
begin to coastdown

• Compressor suction and discharge valves close; SUCTION VALVE OPEN and
TURBINE DISCHARGE VALVE OPEN indicators extinguish. TRANSIT indicator illuminates
briefly then extinguishes and SUCTION VALVE OPEN and DISCHARGE VALVE
OPERATING  OPEN indicator illuminates
PROCEDURE • when suction and discharge valves are fully close; vent valve opens; VENT
VALVE CLOSED indicators extinguishes. TRANSIT indicator illuminates briefly
then extinguishes and VENT VALVE OPEN indicator illuminates
• Engine speed decreases below 60 % gas producer speed
• READY TO LOAD and RUNNING indicators extinguish
• Lube oil pressure from engine‐driven main lube oil pump decreases
and auxiliary pump starts on a 55 minute postlube cycle
• Engine gas producer speed decreases below 15 %
• One minute rolldown timer is activated
• One minute later STOPPING indicator light extinguishes and READY indicator
light illuminates
• Engine coasts to a stop and normal stop cycle is complete. Auxiliary lube oil
pump continues until 55 minutes post lube cycle times out 16
