What’s In

In earlier years, we have learned that a computer system refers to a

complete,
working computer. It includes everything needed to make it work properly. Everything
means that when one of the elements is not present, it will not be functional. This consists
of hardware, software, and peopleware—which are otherwise known as the elements of the
computer system. Peopleware refers to the computer user. Hardware refers to the physi-
cal part of a computer system. It includes everything that you can touch. Examples of hard-
ware are monitor, keyboard, mouse, and system unit. However, these devices won’t func-
tion if there is the absence of programs installed on our computer. The said programs,
which are the set of instructions that tell a computer what to do are known as software. The
operating system or OS is the primary software that runs any computer. It works together
with the other software for accomplishing certain tasks.
Do you still remember the different types of software? Let us recall the different types
of software through the performance of the activity below. Identify the types of software
where the following program icons belong to. Write the letter of your answer.

a. Graphics Software c. Multimedia Software e. System Software

b. Internet Software d. Presentation Software f. Word Processing Software

.

What’s New

Nowadays, every workplace and school must have a computer. Also, with the
emergence of the work from home set-up and online classes, computers have been highly
in-demand among most households. In line with this, peopleware has increased in number.
As computer users, it is not only important to have the necessary hardware that we can use
to accomplish our tasks. We also have to be familiar with the different software that we can
use to perform certain tasks. First and foremost, we need to have an operating system that
should run our computer. An example of this is Windows 10. If a task calls for working with
text, then we must have a word processing software such as Microsoft Word. Whenever

5
we need to do some research, an Internet software like Google Chrome should be installed
on our computer. During times when we need to listen to music or watch videos on our
computer, it is necessary for us to have multimedia software such as Windows Media Play-
er. Moreover, we need a utility program or anti-virus software such as Avira to secure our
files and normal functions of our computer.
For instance, take a moment to read and understand the scenario below. Answer the
questions that follow.

Mrs. Luna gave her class a homework . She

asked them to submit a digital poster about staying
healthy amidst the pandemic. Noah told his class-
mate to go to their house so that they can use the
Internet to search for images to be used for their
homework.
However, Mrs. Luna overheard them. Thus,
she reminded the class to refrain from getting pic-
tures from the Internet. She imposed that if they do
that, they will get a failed remark for that assignment.
She also emphasized the importance of honesty and
creativity among her students.
Figure 1 illustrates the scenario of the
utilization of a graphic software.
Questions:
1. If you belong to Mrs. Luna’s class, how are you going to accomplish the homework?
2. If you are going to draw the poster digitally, as instructed by your teacher, what computer
program or software are you planning to use?
3. Have you used a computer program before that allows you to draw? Can you name it?
4. What do we call the kind of software that enables you to create drawings, edit images,
or add special effects to pictures?

Introduction to CorelDRAW

What is It
When creating a logo, flyer, brochure,
or any publication, it is always easier to include pictures downloaded from the
Internet. However, due to copyright concerns, it is safest to create your own. This could be
possible through the use of a kind of computer program known as a graphics software.
Graphics software is a computer program that allows you to draw, edit images, and add ef-
fects to pictures.
There are various graphics software that we can use. The most basic is the Paint pro-
gram. Paint is very famous among elementary students. This program provides a single
canvas to be covered with "electronic paint". However, to make changes, you have to

6
paint over the existing image. The ―real‖ drawing program can be resized and reshaped
over and over again. Nowadays, there are more advanced graphics software used for
drawing. One of them is CorelDRAW. CorelDRAW is a vector graphics editor developed
during 1987 by Michel Bouillon and Pat

posters. This program gives designers the
most rewarding and enjoyable experience. It
gives you the ability to achieve high-quality designs. Hence, it became one of the most pop-
ular and powerful graphics software.
In this module, you are encouraged to acquire the ability to use the CorelDRAW
application program. Unlike other graphics software, CorelDRAW is more user-friendly and
allows you to have more control over your objects, layers, and pages. This module strongly
suggests the use of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2019. This version has high-quality
templates and effects that enable you to create the best possible design. Also, you can
work more efficiently with increased customization features and easier navigation.
Moreover, if you want to get more creative, you can work on blank templates.
Before creating your first drawing in CorelDRAW, you should be familiar with the
following terms.

Important Terms Relating to CorelDRAW

Term Description
Object Element in a drawing (example: image, shape, line, text, symbol,
or layer)
Drawing Work created in CorelDRAW
Bitmap Image composed of grids of dots or pixels
Docker Window that contains commands and settings for a certain tool or
task
Flyout Group of related tools or menu items
List box List of options that drops down when the down arrow button is
clicked
Artistic text Type of text to which special effects can be applied (example:

1. When the application window appears, click on the New Document plus sign on the
Get Started tab of the Welcome Screen.
 Click on the File menu then choose New.
 Click on the New Document icon on the standard toolbar.
 Press Ctrl + N on your keyboard.

Figure 3 shows the New Document icon.

9
2. In the New Document dialog box, you can either enter your own custom settings or
choose from a preset.

The following are some presets to choose from:

 Web. If you are creating a drawing for the purpose
of publishing on the web. The document units of
measure will be changed to pixels and the resolution
will be changed to 150 DPI (dots per inch).
 Default RGB. If you are creating for sublimation (for
example, printing on a shirt) or laser engraving.
 CMYK. If you are working on offset printing (indirect
printing on paper) artwork.

Figure 4 shows the New Document

dialog box

TRIVIA TIME!
Do you Know the Difference Between RGB and CMYK?
There are two types of color systems: RGB (Red, Green, Blue) represents the pri-
mary colors of light which are used to display images on the screens of computer moni-
tors, televisions, mobile phones, digital cameras, etc. On the other hand, CMYK which
stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and K (Black) is used for print media. These are the
inks used in ―4 colors process printing‖.

3. You can also customize the document setup and then save it as a preset so you can
use it in the future. For example, the common
page size for a large printer is 13‖ x 19‖ so
let’s follow that setting and save it as a preset.
To do this, follow these steps:
a. Choose the Custom as your preset.
b. Choose inches as the units of measure.
c. Enter 13 and 19 in the width and height

4. You may also enter the document name, num-

ber of pages, primary color mode, and
resolution.

5. Click on the three dots next to the Preset

dropdown list and click Save Preset. Enter a
name and then click the OK button afterwards.
This new preset will be available the next time
you start a new document. Figure 5 shows how to change the general
settings and dimensions
6. Once you are have entered the settings, click
OK to create the new document.

10
TRIVIA TIME!
Worried that You Might No Longer
Change the Document Settings?

Fret no more because even though you have set the docu-
ment settings before starting with your document, you still can
change the settings while you’re working on it. You can do this
by simply accessing the Property Bar or the Layout menu. Also,
you can change the document settings by double-clicking on the
grey shadow along the right and bottom of your CorelDRAW Figure 6 shows the grey area

Customizing the Drawing Page

Multiple Page Sizes
You can have multiple pages of different sizes and orientations in CorelDRAW. If
there is a need to have different page sizes for a single document, click the CURRENT
page only icon on the
Property bar after setting up
the page size and orientation.
Figure 7 shows the options for setting different page sizes and
orientation
Background Page Color
A great way to add life to an artwork is by adding a background color to your page.
Take note that the default CorelDRAW document background is white. This means that if
your drawing includes white shapes or objects, they will not be visible. You can add a back-
ground page color using two ways:

1. Adding the background page color via the document options:

a. Go to Layout menu then
choose Document Options or
double-click on the shadow of
the document page to open
Document Options window.
b. On the left column, select
Background.
c. Next, choose Solid.
d. Afterwards, use the dropdo
color palette to select a color.
e. Uncheck Print and export
background.

Figure 8 shows how to add background page color

11
2. Adding a background page color using the Rectangle tool.
a. Ensure that nothing is selected in your document.
b. On the Tools menu, double-click on the Rectangle tool. You will notice that a rectangle
with the size of your document is created.
c. To fill the rectangle, click on a color in the Color palette
d. Right-click on the rectangle then select Lock. This will prohibit the rectangle from
moving whenever you are working on other objects in the document.
e. You can right-click and choose Unlock anytime. If you no longer need the rectangle,
you may delete it.

Setting the Zero Point for Rulers

The default ruler setting is at the bottom left of the page. However, if you want to
move the rulers 0:0 point (top left) around inside the document, click the ruler intersection
(this is where the rulers join at the top left). Afterwards, drag to the top left corner of the
page.
If you want the rulers back to the default location, just double-click on the ruler inter-
section so that they will return to that location.

Adding Guidelines
Guidelines are very helpful tool for layout and design in every artwork. To add Guide-
lines, we can
follow any of the two methods. But
before this, make sure that in the
View menu, Guidelines is checked.
Next, go to Window menu then
choose Dockers. Select the Object
docker and Guidelines docker.

Method 1:
1. Go to the Objects docker and
then select the Guides layer on
page one.
2. From the vertical ruler on the Figure 9 shows how to ensure Guidelines is checked
left , drag a guide and place it
where you want on the document.
3. If you want to adjust the position exactly, you can go to the Object Position box on the
property bar.

12
Method 2:
1. Set the Guideline Type to vertical or horizontal.
2. Then enter the position in the Guideline Position.
3. Now, click Add.

Figure 10 shows how to add Guidelines using the Guidelines docker

Manipulating Objects Using Handles

Manipulating Objects Using Handles
Everything you create using the tools (line, triangle, circle, etc.) in CorelDRAW has a
path. Paths can be classified as opened or closed. The beginning and end of an open
path do not connect. A line is an open path. Whereas, a closed path has no distinct begin-
ning nor end. For instance, a circle or a rectangle has no beginning or end. In other words,
a closed path refers to shape.
In CorelDRAW, a line or shape is called an object. Every object has properties that
you can set. These properties include elements such as size, shape, position, and color.

Drawing a Rectangle
With CorelDRAW, you can create rectangles as well as squares and rounded
rectangles.

To draw a rectangle:

1. Select the Rectangle tool icon in the

toolbox or press F6 on the keyboard.
The pointer will look like a cross-hair
with a small rectangle attached to it.

Figure 11 shows how to draw a rectangle

13
2. Press the left mouse button and drag diagonally. Then, release the mouse button.
3. The rectangle will be selected, showing four nodes (one at each corner) and a set of
eight outer handles. Click and drag a handle to adjust the rectangle’s size.

Selecting Objects
Before changing the properties (size, fill,
etc.) of an object, you must first select it. Use
the Pick tool to select objects and to manipulate
its handles. Handles are the black squares that
appear around a selected object. These are
used to resize an object.

Selecting an object: Figure 12: The Pick Tool Figure 13: The Handles
TIPS:
 To draw a square: Hold down CTRL key as you drag. Be sure to release the mouse
button before the CTRL key. If not, the object will go back to a non-symmetrical
shape.
 To draw a rectangle that fills the drawing page: On the Toolbox, double-click the
Rectangle icon.

1. From the Toolbox, select the Pick tool.

2. Click the object that you want to select. After this, you will notice eight black handles
that appear around the object to show that it is selected.

Selecting multiple objects by clicking:

1. From the Toolbox, select the Pick tool.
2. Hold down the SHIFT key while clicking each object you
want to select. You will
notice that as you select additional objects,
the set of handles expands, surrounding all
objects that are selected.

Selecting all objects on a page:

Figure 13 Selecting Mulitiple
1. From the Edit menu, choose Select All then select Ob- Objects by Clicking
jects.
2. Press CTRL + A on the keyboard.
3. Double-click the toolbox icon of the Pick tool.

Moving Objects

 While selecting the Pick tool: Click anywhere within the object and drag it to its new lo-
cation. (When using the Pick tool, there is no need to select the object before you start
dragging).
 With another tool selected (example, Rectangle tool): Click to select the object and
then—with the pointer over the center of the object, click and drag it to its new location.

14
Resizing Objects
Once an object is selected, handles appear in a rectangular formation around the it.
These have various functions:

 Horizontal Scale: The handles that are located

at the right and left center of the object affect
the object’s horizontal scale by making it wider
or narrower.
 Vertical Scale: The handles that are located at
the top and bottom center of an object affect the
object’s vertical scale by making it taller or
shorter. Figure 14 shows the location of the Handles
 Proportional Scale: The handles that are locat-
ed at the corners affect the object’s proportional scale by simultaneously changing its
horizontal and vertical size.

Changing an object’s size:

1. Select the object using the Pick tool.

2. Do any of the following:
 To change an object’s width: Click the left or right center handle and drag
horizontally.
 To change an object’s height: Click the top or bottom center handle and drag
vertically.
 To proportionally change an object’s size: Click any corner handle and drag
diagonally.
3. Release the mouse button once the object is at its desired size.
