I. Present continuous or present simple?

II. Present Perfect or Past Simple?

III. Present perfect or present perfect continuous?


Complete the sentences using one and the same verb.

1. (run) Those young men are running- nearly two miles.


They have run for ten minutes.
2. (do) Since tea time Elaine is doing sums in her exercise book.
She has done fifty.
3. (drink) You are drinking tea all day. You have drunk at least ten cups.
4. (play) Bob and his friends are playing golf since lunch time.

5. (deliver) Simon has delivered about two hundred newspapers.
He is delivering them since early this morning.
IV. Present perfect or past perfect?

1. We had no car at the time. We (sell) had sold our old one.
2. The square looked awful. People (leave)had leaved litter everywhere.
3. You can have that newspaper. I (finish) have finished with it.
4. There's no more cheese. We (eat)have eaten it all.
5. I was really tired last night. I (have)had a hard day.

V. Past Simple or Past Perfect?


Write the two sentences as one using past perfect in either the first or the
second part of the sentence. For example: He finally arrived. We started the meeting. - When he
had finally arrived, we started the meeting.
1. Joe saved enough money. He bought a motor-bike. When Joe had saved enough money. He
bought a motor-bike.
2. Max put all the dishes away. He dried them. When Max had put all the dishes away. He dried
them.
3. Jane signed the letter. She typed it. When Jane had signed the letter. She typed it.
4. We completed the forms. We handed them in. When we had completed the forms. We
handed them in
5. I looked both ways. I pulled out into the road. When I had looked both ways. I pulled out into
the road.

VI. Present and past.


Put each verb into correct form. (8 tenses. No future forms)
An eight-year-old boy (disappear)disappeared. Mark Davidson (not
return)didn’t return yesterday from the park near his home in Copley
Road, Dulverstone. The Davidson (live)live five minutes’ walk away
from the park. Mark (go)went to the park at four o'clock and

VII. Present and past.

Complete the radio news report. Put in the correct form the verbs.

"Hello! I (speak) am speaking to you from Oxford, where the finals of the
World Quiz Championship will begin tomorrow. The favorite is Claude Jeimings from

competitions for years. Now suddenly he is a big star. So far this year he
