T
he Minnedosa Regional Events Centre (MREC) com-
mittee presented a tentative design and business plan
for the multi-million dollar project at a public information
meeting Wednesday evening at the Minnedosa Commu-
nity Conference Centre.
A power point presentation was shown outlining the
design features of the facility. Te centre is designed to
ofer residents and visitors more than just a hockey are-
na. With sports felds, an agricultural barn, riding rings,
walking track, ftness centre, classrooms and conference
rooms included in the design, MREC will be a multi-use
facility that everyone can enjoy.
Te comprehensive design features a main level that
is 68,570 square feet. Situated on this level would be a can-
teen, washrooms, ticket booth, of ces, board room, eleva-
tor and stairs, main foor viewing for both rinks, eight stan-
dard and one enhanced dressing room. Te upper level is
20,990 square feet and would include a 540 foot walking
track, washrooms, a classroom, a multi-purpose room, a
wellness (ftness) centre.
To justify the expense of building an arena with two
sheets of ice, the design committee was asked to create a
business plan, ofered by Scott Burgess. In this plan com-
mittee members found one sheet of ice would run at a
defecit, but two would pay for itself and possibly show a
proft. Minnedosas current arena operates at almost 0%
available ice time outside what is regularly scheduled and
while its most frequent user is Minnedosa Minor Hockey,
several other organizations and individuals frequent the
arena. When trying to decide whether or not two sheets of
ice was economically viable, the committee looked at the
local market for ice rental, the availability and fnancial
benefts of having a second sheet of ice, and the possibility
of attracting a new hotelier to Minnedosa.
Project Manager Guenter Schaub gave a report on the
total costs of the project. Te construction of the facility
will cost approximately $14,500,000. Other fees including
survey, geotechnical, management and design will add
approximately $2,025,000. An allowance of $3,800,000 is
being made for contingencies including change orders
and infation. With approximately $500,000 added for
paving, the total can be rounded to $21,000,000.
