Heat Stress Meter

TWL-1S
Calibration Guide
Overview

Introduction
There are four sensors in TWL-1S. Only humidity sensor needs to be calibrated
regularly. The recommended calibration period is 6 to 12 months depends on the
usage pattern.
Thermistors The calibration drift of two thermistors in the device is very small and
negligible. Don’t worry about them.
Wind speed sensor It is hard to calibrate any wind sensor without wind tunnel
which is expensive and not practical. We will provide a rule of thumb to examine
how wind cup works on the device.

Principle of operation
A standard environment of humidity is necessary to carry out the calibration.
Saturated salt solutions provide such environment. At 25° C, the relative humidity of
MgCl2 solution is 32.8% while saturated NaCl solution is 75.2%.
A special bottle is designed to contain the saturated salt solutions and to create a
chamber holding the humidity for RH sensor of TWL-1S.
The device can be entered calibration mode to sense the standard environment
and write the value back to the memory.

Procedures

Before calibration
Make sure the salt solutions are in saturated condition. Check list:
• You can see both salt and water are in the bottle.
• Bottles have already stayed in a steady environment for 4 hours at least. It doesn’t
need to be exactly 25° C but the fluctuation must be small.
There is no wind or any air flow around the bottles.

Detail description

1. Turn off meter by pressing POWER.

2. Remove black ball by loosening 2 screws on the neck.
3. Remove dust filter by pulling off it hardly. Now device looks like Figure 1.
4. Loose the screw of brown bottle before inserting the meter. Insert the device
and than tighten the screw of brown bottle. Please see Figure 2.
5. Long press POWER, BACKLIGHT and PAGE buttons to enter calibration mode.
Mode banner shows number around 32.0 % and blinks1, indicating calibration
in progress, and the Schedule Planner banner shows the time passed. Now
meter is in low rh% calibration mode.
6. After 60 min, Mode banner stops blinking, indicating the end of calibration.
7. Remove the 33% salt bottle and insert the humidity sensor into the 75% salt
solution (NaCl). (blue bottle; Figure 3)
8. Press PAGE for 2 sec. and enter high rh% calibration mode.
9. Mode banner shows number around 75.0 % and blinks, indicating calibration in
progress, and the Schedule Planner banner shows the time passed.
10. After 60 min, Mode banner stops blinking, indicating the end of calibration.
11. Turn off meter by pressing POWER and remove the salt bottle.

After calibration
Compare the RH reading with a calibrated standard device and see if the difference
is within 3%RH. If yes, the device is well calibrated. If not, recalibrate again.
Salt solution storage: room temperature and no wind

1 The
exact value depends on the room temperature measured by the meter. So please
make sure the environment is steady and no wind.
