WIDE-EYED YOUNGSTERS VISIT CLASS 1

BUDVA

he International Offshore Team Association (IOTA) has joined the Qatar Marine Sports Federation (QMSF) in launching Class 1 for Dhreima an initiative to support the Qatar Orphan Foundation. Sheikh Hassan Bin Jabor Al-Thani, President of the QMSF and IOTA, was instrumental in encouraging Class 1 a sport in which he has been a leading figure since 2003 to become an active vehicle to raise awareness of the foundation. In presenting this initiative I wanted to emphasise how sport, in whatever form or however extreme, can support the values and the importance of the activities of an organisation such as the Qatar Orphan Foundation. The association between Class 1 and Dhreima will be developed over a series of activities that will take place at races during the course of the 2008 season, with the purpose of highlighting the activities of Dhreima and finding synergy with similar organisations based in countries that host Class 1 GP events. The Qatar Orphan Foundation - Dhreima was launched on 10 June 2003 under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser Al-Misnad, Chairman of the Supreme Council. We in the Qatari Orphan Foundation believe that our community values of solidarity, compassion and cooperation make us truly capable of providing all the support the children need, said Nabil Ali Bin Ali, Chairman of the Dhreima Board, adding. And we are extremely happy that the Class 1 Championship has elected to support the Foundation.

Twenty wide-eyed VIP youngsters from the Childrens Home in Bijela in Montenegro were given a day to remember, spending the afternoon with Class 1 and meeting Sheikh Hassan bin Jabor Al-Thani on Friday, 23 May at the Montenegrin Grand Prix in Budva. The children watched the afternoon practice session and were treated to a slap-up tea-party before having their pictures taken with Sheikh Hassan and the pilots their favourite was clearly Nicola Giorgi and then joining the teams for the Class 1 Boat Parade. The visit was arranged by the event organisers and IOTA as part of their new initiative, Class 1 for Dhreima, in support of the Qatar Orphan Foundation and was the first of a series of activities that will take place at races during the course of the season to highlight the activities of Dhreima and similar organisations based in countries that host Class 1 GP events.

The Class 1 World Powerboat Championship is back racing on Russian waters for the first time in ten years and now for the first time in the countrys Capital City, Moscow, and it is a race in which the Qatar Team must finish ahead of their arch-rivals Victory if they are to keep in touch in the title race. The Victory Team has been simply imperious this season and holds the top two spots in the championship standings, with Victory 1 taking two wins from two starts and Victory 7s Abdullah Al Mehairbi and Jean-Marc Sanchez grabbing two podiums. With Arif Al Zafeen still sidelined through injury, the team again turns to former champion Mohammed Al Marri to partner Nadir

Bin Hendi in Victory 1 and they will be looking for this scratch-pairing to repeat their win in Budva. Qatar 95 is 19 points shy of the leaders in third place, with Matteo Nicolini and Abdullah Al-Sulaiti heading the Qatar camps challenge to halt Victorys charge, and whilst Nicolini believes the team has the overall performance to do so, he and Al-Sulaiti will first have to stave off the challenge from their team-mates Sheikh Hassan bin Jabor Al-Thani and Steve Curtis, who find themselves down in fourth place after struggling home in sixth place last time out after suffering engine problems.

Giampaolo Montavoci and Kolbjorn Selmer have produced two very solid fifth place finishes and head the middle order in Foresti & Suardi, and they will do well to hold onto fifth place in the championship; they know, however, that they will come under pressure from Jotun, who now seem to have found the reliability to match their obvious performance levels, and the all-Norwegian crew of Jorn Tandberg and Bjorge Jacobsen will be quietly confident that they can now challenge the top four. However, there is increasing speculation that Inge Brigt Aarbakke could well be drafted in to make his Class 1 debut. After the frustration of being forced to sit out the race in Budva, but having recently signed a new engine supply deal with Italian engine builder, SCAM, SeveneleveNs Nicola Giorgi and Giorgio Manuzzi will be looking to get back in the points and to repeat their top six finish from the first race in Doha, Qatar. For the all-Spanish outfit of Domenico Cirilli and newcomer, Sergio Carrasco, making just his second start in Class 1, the target in Moscow will be to build on their solid performance from their first outing and bring Roscioli Hotels Roma home and in the points. And whilst the competition amongst all the teams will be fierce with individual battles raging throughout the fleet, what might add spice and influence the outcome of the 24-lap, 95.63Nm Russian Grand Prix, will be the course itself, run on the Khimki Reservoir, one of eight artificial lakes forming part of the Moscow Canal system. The course described by Jean-Marc Sanchez as very technical is very tight and narrow, the laps are short and overtaking will be limited and the importance of a good start, crucial. Victorys Team Manager, Gianfranco Venturelli, has confirmed that Mohammed Al Marri will again partner Nadir Bin Hendi in Victory 1, with Arif Al Zafeen still sidelined through injury. Al Zafeen will see specialists in Munich prior to the race and is hoping to be given the all-clear for a return to racing in Arendal. Venturelli also said that he is confident the team can maintain their excellent start to the season. There is no reason why we cant continue this run of good form. We are very well prepared and are not making mistakes other teams are.

01 GIORGIOFFSHORE SIGN ENGINE DEAL WITH SCAM

Giorgioffshore team boss, Gianni Giorgi, has confirmed he has reached a deal with Italian engine builder SCAM to supply the engines to SeveneleveN for the remainder of the 2008 season, starting at this weekends Russian Grand Prix. For Gianni and Nicola Giorgi, the agreement with SCAMs Franco Alloni marks another crucial step forward in the teams ongoing development after unveiling their Michael Peters-designed, Victory-built hull at the season opener in Qatar in March, as it strives to compete at the highest level in the sport.

02 JOTUN LOOKING AND SOUNDING GOOD

Following an impressive third place in qualifying and a solid fourth in the Montenegrin Grand Prix, Jotun has undergone a series of tests, with throttleman Jorn Tandberg joined by Inge Brigt Aarbakke on the wheel, fueling speculation that Aarbakke could make his Class 1 race debut in Moscow. The test took place on Gandsfjorden, near Stavanger, with the allNorwegian team completing a series of general set-up tests, as well as running sound tests to ensure the Mercury-Class 1 engine package meets the decibel limits that the authorities in Arendal have imposed for the Norwegian Grand Prix in July. Inge went out for a practice session in Montenegro and this latest test gave him the opportunity to clock up more time in the boat. It also allowed the team to fine-tune one or two set-up combinations we have been working on, said Team Manager, Per Carsten Michelsen. We also took the opportunity to ensure our engines noise levels will be within those that will be imposed for all teams in Arendal.

Despite the frustrations they suffered in Budva, Matteo Nicolini believes the team has the performance to match Victory. The overall result was not good, but our performance levels throughout the weekend were good, he said. We can match Victory for sure, but we must get our set-ups right and cut out the mistakes. I think the course will be very tricky. It is very narrow and tight, so overtaking will be hard and so the start is crucial. I think it will be a big fight between us and Victory.

Domenico Cirilli is confident that modifications carried out to his boat will give him and newcomer, Sergio Carrasco, the opportunity to build on their performance in Budva and add more points. Since Budva, we have worked on the boat and also changed the overall look. The course seems quite technical and the boats with more technology might have an advantage, but my target is to finish in the points, and even more important is for Sergio to gain more experience.
