ALL-ITALIAN
LINE-UP
A restructured Veneta Marina-Scam-YCM Team sees an all-Italian pairing in Foresti & Suardi Roscioli Hotels, with experienced throttleman, Giampaolo Montavoci joined in the cockpit by veteran racer, Francesco Pansini, for their first outing together, marking Pansinis return to Class 1 action after a 13-year absence.
SEA DUBAI
Class 1s newest commercial initiative was launched at the 17th Dubai International Boat Show, with the distinguished UAE sports brand Sea Dubai becoming a Platinum Partner of the 2009 UIM-WPPA Class 1 World Powerboat Championship. This exciting initiative with Class 1 will highlight to a truly global audience the significance of the
Emirate of Dubai as a major destination for international watersports, said Saeed Hareb, Chief Executive Officer, Mina Seyahi.
Norwegians Jorn Tandberg and Christian Zaborowski reform their successful racing partnership in Doha. Tandberg, the defending Class 1 European Champion, confirmed the teams revised driver-throttleman combination for the opening race of the season, with Ugland Offshore Racings distinctive, scarlet, MercuryClass 1, V8-powered raceboat running under the colours of Norwegian company, Welmax AS.
Duemme Broker team boss, Domenico Cirilli, will unveil his new-look team for 2009 - owned by Duemme Yacht Brokers Spain S.L and based out of Torrevieja, Spain - at the Spanish Grand Prix in Alicante, 5-7 June. Cirilli confirmed that he will throttle the Lamborghini-SKEMA V12-powered, Victory-built hull and that he will announce his new Spanish driver in the coming weeks.
CIRILLI
ITALIAN
Qatar 96s throttleman has vowed to return to winning ways, after a disastrous 2008 campaign saw the former Champion and team principal, Sheikh Hassan, without a race win. This year will be a very different story. We have put in a lot of work over the winter, we have several new guys on the team and we are all very, very focussed, he said. We have made some quite radical changes to the boat, we know she is very good in rough seas, but with the likelihood of limited rough races this year, we really need a boat that is also quick in flat conditions.

Ten boats line up for the 21-lap, 96.45Nm Qatar Grand Prix, but with the introduction of new rules governing the use of electronics and limited propeller choice, the outcome of the season-opener is hard to predict.

SEASON-OPENER
New rules, Victory want the Grand Slam, Qatar want a first World title and all their rivals want a piece of the action - Class 1 looks set for a captivating and possibly unpredictable season.

Dubais Victory team, the defending World, Middle East and Edox Pole Position Champions, will start amongst the favourites for race honours and have rolled out three World Champions as they launch their bid to retain their crowns and hunt down a fourth win in Qatari waters. Defending Champion, Nadir Bin Hendi is joined in Fazza 3 by 2007 World and European Champion, Arif Al Zafeen, with his former partner, Jean-Marc Sanchez, again called on by the team to steer another rookie Mohammad Al Mehairi - through his first season.
The Qatar tEam pose the greatest threat, and Sheikh Hassan Bin Jabor Al-Thani is in absolutely no doubt that his team can kick-start their season-long campaign with a win on home waters. Sheikh Hassan, looking for his first win in Doha, lines up with former World Champion Steve Curtis - looking for his sixth win - in Qatar 96, with team-mates Matteo Nicolini and Abdullah Al-Sulaiti, who hold the in-house bragging rights after taking the teams only win in 2008, lining up in the Sterling V8-powered, Qatar 95, with Al-Sulaiti looking for his second win in front of a partisan crowd. The bid to oust the sports two titans and upset the form book, is headed by the defending European Champion, Jorn Tandberg, who reforms his winning partnership with fellow Norwegian, Christian Zaborowski, running the MercuryClass 1-powered scarlet MTI, WElmax. maritimo australia is the third team fielding a two-boat line-up and will be hoping to repeat the success that team owner, Bill Barry-Cotter and Peter McGrath enjoyed in Doha in 2002, when they took their maiden Class 1 win. Twenty oneyear-old, Tom Barry-Cotter and Pal Virik Nilsen form the youngest partnership in Class 1, but can boast the most races together of any driver-throttleman combination in the Championship, and will run a new hull, Maritimo 11, with Peter McGrath joined by Italian, Giorgio Manuzzi, in the boat the team debuted in Dubai last season - both outfits opting to run Maritimo Performance V8 power-plants.
new driver combinations dominate throughout the fleet and add to the unpredictability; Giampaolo Montavoci and Francesco Pansini, making a welcome return to Class 1 after a 13year absence, team up for the first time and make up the only all-italian pairing in the Championship in ForEsti & suardi- roscioli HotEls.
nicola Giorgi, who grabbed his first Class 1 podium in the penultimate race in Dubai in 2008 teams up with former Victory driver, ahmed al suwaidi in GiorGioFFsHorE, with italian throttleman Giovanni Carpitella partnering Mohammed abdelkader ahmed in spirit oF spain.

Class 1 is the spiritual heir to offshore powerboat racing of the 1980s, when lightning-fast catamarans started to do battle on open seas around the world. Today, Class 1 sets out to be the ultimate in top-flight powerboat racing, with spectacular events on coastal racecourses, and easily
seen by ever increasing crowds of spectators. Class 1 is also the point of reference for the world of powerboat racing in terms of its levels of technology and safety, which have been achieved thanks to its Racing Rules, which enable racing with substantial parity of competition, despite using engines of conceptually diverse designs.

propEllErs: From 1st January 2009 there will be 1 supplier of propellers for Class 1. The Propeller thickness cannot be altered, and will be specified by the manufacturer and/or the WPPA. Propeller cup may be altered; however, this will void any warranty claim that may arise. The manufacturer will specify the areas that can be modified. Three sets of propellers which were used in the 2008 season can be registered and used for the 2009 season and can only be replaced with the official suppliers Class 1 2009 specification propellers. All Propellers must adhere to the Minimum thickness. Three different pairs of propellers per boat will be allowed. Propellers can only be changed for the identical type as those initially registered, due to damage or wear. Propellers will be allocated to a boat, for use on that boat only. For instance a two-boat team may not swap registered propellers from one boat to the other. However a two-boat team with fewer than 4 sets of registered propellers may use them on either boat. For 2009 Season only, 1x set of propellers can be changed for a different diameter or pitch during the racing season.

The system cannot be improved, changed or modified in any way without prior written approval. Rule All control inputs affecting trimming and steering of the boat must be directly provided by the crew. It is not permitted to interface the operation of the control surfaces, drives, ballast tanks, fuel tanks or throttles with any devices that provide additional control input, whether electronic, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, or any other source. Any additional sensing devices, such as, but not exclusively, those used in a data acquisition system, must be demonstrably physically independent of any individual control system. For 790 HP naturally aspirated 4100kg boats; Steering must be by either drives or rudders, not both. Rudders must only be allowed to move on one axis (no retractable rudders).
