Casing Design Course

Prepared By
Wissam Hussein Naji
Objectives
• Understand the main functions, characteristics and different
type of casing.
• Understand the geometric characteristics and properties of
casing, and how these can affect performance.
• Appreciate the requirements for casing seat selection with
regard to subsurface information.
• Conduct casing design calculations for different load cases via
different methods.
• Understand how buckling affects casing design limitations and
show an appreciation for mitigating its effects.
• Appreciate the effects of temperature and wear on casing
design.
• Understand how corrosion can reduce casing life/performance,
recognize signs of corrosion.
• Recognize the factors are affecting in the maximum load of
casing.
• Bending effect.
• Shock Load effect.
Casing Design
 Why Run Casing?
 Types of Casing Strings
 Classification of Casing
 Burst, Collapse and Tension
 Effect of Axial Tension on Collapse Strength
PURPOSE OF CASING STRING
 Support the well head and BOPstack.
 Provide returns of mud to surface when drilling.
 Control well pressure.
 Shut off high pressure zones.
 Shut off permeable zones (cause differential sticking).
 Isolate special trouble zones which may cause hole problem such
as swelling clay, shale, sloughing shale, plastic formations.
 Formation causing mud contamination (gypsum, anhydrite, salt).
 Lost circulation formations.
 Isolate different formation pressure.
 Isolate weak zones during fracturing.
 Isolate permeable productive formations, reducing the risk for
underground blow out.
 Confine produced fluid to the well bore and provide a flow path.
 Provide a stable environment for packers, liner, etc.
