The Manila Hotel

Architect: Daniel Hudson Burnham & William E. Parsons

Location: 1 Rizal Park, Ermita, Manila, 0913 Metro Manila

The hotel served as the official residence of General Douglas MacArthur and his
family, which also witnessed how the city suffered from the damages caused of World
War II under the Japanese invasion. It is also recognized as the “Address of Prestige” in
the Far East to prominent people such as presidents, royalties, public figures and rock
stars–as well as other discriminating guests.

In 1935, President Manuel Quezon hired Paris-trained Filipino architect Andres

P. Luna, son of painter Juan N. Luna to take charge of the ₱1,000,000 renovation of the
Manila Hotel, equivalent to $10,000,000 in 2020 USD under the supervision of the
renowned engineering firm Pedro Siochi and Company.

By the year 1975, the hotel was remodeled and expanded to 570 rooms with the
addition of the high-rise hotel building behind the original five-story structure. National
Artists for Architecture like Leandro Locsin and Ildefonso Santos with Patricia Keller, a
partner in the international interior design firm of Dale Keller & Associates headed the
renovations of the hotel.
Manila Polo Club

Architect: Daniel Hudson Burnham & William E. Parsons

Location: G2VQ+MV6, McKinley Rd, Makati, Metro Manila

The Manila Polo Club was incorporated on August 18, 1909. Founders of the
club were: Forbes, Martin Egan (then editor of the Manila Times), C. H. Sleeper
(Director, Bureau of Lands), Col. H.B. McCoy (Collector of Customs), P.G. McDonnell
(Manila Municipal Collector), R.P. Strong, Edward Bowditch, Jr., Frank B. Hahn, and
Warwick Green. Officially opened in November 27, 1909 on Calle Real in Pasay, the
first clubhouse of the Manila Polo Club was built in the native style, featuring wooden
frames, wooden sidings, an elevated floor, and a thatched roof. A distinctive
architectural feature was the water tower made to appear as a pagoda.

Jack Manning, the manager of the Manila Polo Club, commissioned National
Artist for Architecture Pablo Antonio to design the Polo Club after he saw Antonio’s own
residence in Pasay. Antonio also designed theaters and apartments however, he
considered the Manila Polo Club as one of his best. Clean lines, plain surfaces and bold
rectangular masses characterized his architecture, employing wood, stone and
reinforced concrete.
Rufino Pacific Tower

Architect: Juan Felipe De Jesus Nakpil

Location: 32c, 1229 Ayala Ave, Legazpi Village, Makati, Metro Manila

Constructed in 1996, the Rufino Pacific Tower, commonly known as the Rufino
Plaza, is the tallest steel-framed building in the Philippines. Although other buildings
have exceeded its height, it remains an architectural beauty standing at a height of
almost 530 feet, just over 650 feet if one considers the building's 8-storey radio tower.
The building itself stands at 41 storeys above ground, including a 10-storey
podium which was part of the original building that was modified to be part of the new
tower. The building is owned and developed by the Rufino Family. While being home to
the Rufino family corporations, the building also offers serviced office solutions on
multiple floors.
