02. Histories
The contemporary culture of north korea is based on traditional Korean cultural, but
developed since the establishment of Democratic People's Republic in 1948. Juche
ideology asserts Korea's cultural distinctiveness and creativity as well as the
productive powers of the working masses.

03. Geographical Setting

North Korea is located in east Asia on the northern half of the Korean Peninsula. North
Korea shares a border with three countries; China along the Amnok River, Russia along
the Tumen River, and South Korea along the Korean Demilitarized Zone.

Location:

Located in the continent of Asia, North Korea covers 120,408 square kilometers of land

and 130 square kilometers of water, making it the 99th largest nation in the world with a
total area of 120,538 square kilometers.
.

Climate:
North Korea has a combination of a continental climate and an oceanic climate, with
four distinct seasons .Most of North Korea is classified as being of a humid continental
climate within the Köppen climate classification scheme, with warm summers and cold,
dry winters. In summer, there is a short rainy season called changma

The climate on north korea is a complex subject: the vast size of the country and considerable
variation in altitude make for a wide range of climate types. North korea has four seasons: winter
(June–August), spring (September–November), summer (December–February) and autumn
(March–May), all featuring different weather conditions.

Topography:

Early European visitors to Korea remarked that the country resembled "a sea in a
heavy gale" because of the many successive mountain ranges that crisscross the
peninsula. Some 80 percent of North Korea's land area is composed of mountains and
uplands, with all of the peninsula's mountains with elevations of 2,000 meters or more
located in North Korea. The great majority of the population lives in the plains and
lowlands.

04 Social Institutions
Family: The family is regarded by North Korean authorities as a "cell," or basic
unit of society, but not an economic entity. A person participates in production in
a cooperative, factory, or office and individually earns "work points."

The Nuclear Family:

The nuclear family is the most common household unit. Small families of one or two children
are the norm. Partly for economic reasons and partly because of tradition, sons and daughters
often stay with their parents until they are well into their twenties or until they marry.

The Extended Family:

Although the number of complete nuclear families has increased, this group includes legal
marriages, common-law marriages, and reconstituted families (families formed in a second,
subsequent union, often involving children of previous unions).

3. Dynamics of the Family:

Family dynamics in north korea. Most of the research on family dynamics is conducted from a
qualitative and micro social approach. It contributes evidence of important trends in family
dynamics, most of which are the result of the economic crisis and the high unemployment rates.
They are:

 The emergence of new income providers in households, which implies that men are no
longer the only—nor, frequently, the main— provider of family income.
 An increase in the number of female-headed households..

Parental Roles:
Although there are no legal impediments to women performing most roles, their access to some
positions of power is limited. Very few women are elected as senators, and there are fewer
female than male deputies.

Marriage and Courtship:

Marriage is not for the individual but rather for the desire of the family. If one decides to

get married, they must get consent from the whole family. In the past it was generally

considered a taboo for a man and a woman to marry if they both have the same last

name from the same ancestor.

Female/male Roles: Roles for Women:

 Women in the workplace earn 92 percent of what men do in north korea, while
Nicaraguan women earn 61 percent, and Brazilians and Chileans earn just 71 percent of
that of men.

Roles for Man:

From the very beginning of north korea's establishment, men have been in control of rules and
regulations. Running a country, supporting his colony, being in charge. Men have been kings,
rulers, and the majority of the government rule. When times changed, so did the gender roles of
north korea.

Education:
North Korea’s education system is very important for all Korean citizens because the core
Korean teachings are infused through education. Students in North Korea are taught the
communist ideology and also the greatness of their leaders such as Kim Jong II and Kim II Sung
through education.
 Primary Education:

Accepted between ages 5 and 13. Primary education s the first EP cycles (grades 1–5). Because
of the system that was in place during 1996-2007, most schools that offered 4 years of primary
school prior to 1996 were forced to be converted and accept grades 7th and 9th, while others
chose to eliminate 8th grade altogether, forcing students to complete the 3rd cycle in another
institution.

Secondary Education

The secondary school is named "The Higher Middle School of Six Years." As its name suggests,
the "Higher Middle School" provides six years of schooling. The Higher Middle School has two
levels: four years on the lower level and two years on the higher level. The lower level is called
the middle school class for students from the ages of 10 to 13.

Higher education:

Higher education has two kinds of systems: academic higher education and higher
education for continuing education. The academic higher education system includes
three kinds of institutions: universities, professional schools, and technical schools.
Graduate schools for master and doctoral level studies are attached to universities.

. University level: 4- to 6-years Professional education taught at Universities offering many

different degrees Licentiate, Engineer's degree, Medic Title, Attorney Title, Professorships,
Translation degrees, etc.

 Post-graduate level: This is a specialized and research-oriented education level.

Political system:
A year has passed since the birth of the Kim Jong-un regime in North Korea following the
sudden death of General Secretary Kim Jong-il in December 2011. During the early days of the
regime, many observers commented that all would not be smooth sailing for the new regime,
citing the lack of power and previous experience of the youthful Kim Jong-un as a primary cause
of concern. However, on the surface at least, it now appears that Kim Jong-un is now in full
control of his powers as the “Guiding Leader” and that the political situation is calm.

Political parties:

The politics of North Korea takes place within the framework of the official state
philosophy, Juche, a concept created by Hwang Jang-yopand later attributed to Kim Il-sung. The
Juche theory is the belief that through self-reliance and a strong independent state, true socialism
can be achieved.[1][2]
The WPK is the ruling party of North Korea. It has been in power since its creation in 1948. Two
minor political parties also exist, but are legally bound to accept the ruling role of the
WPK. They, with the WPK, comprise the popular front Democratic Front for the Reunification
of the Fatherland (DFRF).
Kim Il-sung ruled the country from 1948 until his death in July 1994, holding the offices
of General Secretary of the WPK from 1949 to 1994 (titled as Chairman from 1949 to
1972), Prime Minister of North Korea from 1948 to 1972 and President from 1972 to 1994. He
was succeeded by his son, Kim Jong-il. While the younger Kim had been his father's designated
successor since the 1980s, it took him three years to consolidate his power.
Special Taxes:
Income Tax: Levied on a sliding scale from 8% to 22%. Non-residents pay a withholding tax of
20% on Argentine-sourced income only.

Sales Tax: Standard IVA (VAT) is 20%. A higher rate of 25% is levied on certain utilities.

Transfer Tax: 1.3%. This does not apply to a resident selling his main dwelling if he commits to
buying another property within 12 months.

Capital Gains: Depending on your situation, regular income tax may apply on income earned
from the sale of property.
Rental Income Tax: Treated as part of your regular taxable income. Levied at 32% for
residents and 20% for nonresidents on the gross annual rent.

Property Tax: Income earned from renting your property is treated as regular income tax.

Role of Local Government:

North Korea is divided administratively into nine provinces (to), the special province-
level municipality (jikhalsi) of P’yŏngyang, the special city (thŭkpyŏlsi) of Rasŏn, and two
special administrative regions (chigu)—the Mount Kŭmgang tourist region and the
Kaesŏng industrial region. The provinces are further subdivided into ordinary cities (si),
counties (gun, or kun), and villages (ri), the smallest administrative unit.
Legal System:

The Legal system of North korea is a Civil law legal system. The pillar of the Civil system is
the system of Korean  (1855).
The north korean Constitution of 1853  was an attempt to unite the unstable and young country
of the United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata under a single law, creating as well the different
organisms needed to run a country.
Organization of the Judiciary System:
Justice is administered by both federal and provincial courts. The former deal only with cases of
a national character or those to which different provinces or inhabitants of different provinces are
parties. The Supreme Court, which supervises and regulates all other federal courts, is composed
of nine members nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate.

Code,common,socialist,or Islamic-low country?

Provincial courts include supreme courts, appellate courts, courts of first instance, and minor
courts of justices of the peace (alcaldes) and of market judges. Members of provincial courts are
appointed by the provincial governors. Trial by jury was authorized by the 1853 constitution for
criminal cases, but its establishment was left to the discretion of congress, resulting in sporadic
use.
Social Organization:
In sociology, a social organization is a pattern of relationships between and among individuals
and social groups.
Characteristics of social organization can include qualities such as sexual composition,
spatiotemporal cohesion, leadership, structure, division of labor, communication systems, and so
on.[3][4]
Because of these characteristic of social organization, people can keep tabs on their everyday
work and involvement in other activities which are controlled and determine different forms of
human interactions.

Group Behavior:
group behavior needs to be inculcated in organizations for the simple reason that
employees must conform to the rules and regulations that govern organizations. Hence,
there is a need for uniformity and consistency in the way organizational group behavior has to be
molded.
Social Classes:

A social class is a set of subjectively defined concepts in the social sciences and political

theory centered on models of social stratification in which people are grouped into a set
of hierarchical social categories,[1] the most common being the upper, middleand lower classes.

Clubs and Other’s Organizations: Although most of the North korea population is urban
(80 percent), North korea is still quite attached to its past rural glory as a grain and cattle
exporter, activities that enabled it to rank among the six wealthiest nations in the world in 1926.
The strength of rural imagery is confirmed in the way some North koreas represent themselves to
foreigners.

05. Religion and Aesthetics

Religion and Other Belief Systems:

In North Korea, the Constitution provides for "freedom of religious belief"; the Democratic
People's Republic of Korea is a secular state. The US and South Korean governments are the
main sources of information on religion in North Korea.
North Korea is officially an atheistic state,[1][2] and government policy continues to interfere with
the individual's ability to choose and to manifest his or her religious belief. The regime continues
to repress the religious activities of unauthorized religious groups.
06. Living Conditions:

Until recently, North korea had a very large middle class. Upper-class and lower-class sectors
can generally trace their origins to more than four generations in the country. Originally the
upper class was mainly formed by landowners of large estates. Urbanization and industrialization
processes intensified in the early decades of the twentieth century and greatly affected North
korea's social structure. Merchants and industrialists increasingly joined the ranks of the landed
elite.

Diet and Nutrition:

This is a list of North Korean dishes and foods, comprising common foods that are consumed
in North Korea. North Korea is a country in East Asia constituting the northern part of
the Korean Peninsula. It is bordered to the south by South Korea, and the two countries are
separated by the Korean Demilitarized Zone.
Historically, Korean cuisine has evolved through centuries of social and political change.

Housing:
The quality and style of housing in North korea vary considerably according to location and
economic status. Many of the residents of Buenos Aires and other large cities live in high-rise
apartments; those in the suburbs reside in ranch-style concrete homes with tile roofs. However,
poorer families often inhabit substandard housing in tenements or shantytowns. More than two-
fifths of homes in the city of Buenos Aires are rented. Apartments and condominiums account
for three-fourths of homes in the capital but only about one-eighth of those in the surrounding
suburbs.

Clothing:
North korea is known as one of the most stylish countries in Latin America. With its European
influence in cosmopolitan cities like Buenos Aires, North korea fashion is on the rise. Young and
old take pride in how they dress, indulge in beauty treatments, and always try to look their best.
Popular trends are followed by both men and women, especially by young people.

Recreation, Sports, and Other Leisure Activities:

North korea’s worldwide preeminence on the polo field reflects the nation’s divided social base,
the hardiness of its horses, and the skills of its riders. Steeped in the gaucho tradition and having
the open fields of the Pampas on which to practice, a ranch hand with the necessary talent can
attain high renown and modest wealth at either polo or horse racing. Both the wealthy and the
urban middle classes attend exclusive sporting clubs offering tennis, yachting, or power boating.
Rugby football is played in several private schools.
Historically, North Korea's participation in international sporting events has been hindered by its
relations with South Korea. In recent years, however, cooperation in sports has gotten
better[2] but, in 2017, North Korea complained to various international sporting associations
that sanctions against it imposed by the United States unfairly prevent it from buying
professional sporting equipment. In 1965, the national football team advanced to the FIFA World
Cup held in England. The Chollima did not qualify for any further World Cup finals until they
advanced to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Social Security:

Korean government reporting directly to the Supreme Leader. [1][2] It was established in
1973. In addition to its internal security duties, it is involved in the The State Security
Department (SSD) of North Korea or the Ministry of State Security is the secret
police agency of North Korea. It is an autonomous agency of the North operation of North
Korea's concentration camps and various other hidden activities. [3] It is reputed to be one of
the most brutal police forces in the world, and has been involved in numerous human rights
abuses.

Health care:

Healthcare in North Korea includes a national medical service and health insurance system.

[2]
North Korea’s government provides universal health care for all citizens.
North Korean health services are offered for free. [3] In 2001 North Korea spent 3% of its gross
domestic product on health care. Beginning in the 1950s, the DPRK put great emphasis on
healthcare, and between 1955 and 1986, the number of hospitals grew from 285 to 2,401, and the
number of clinics – from 1,020 to 5,644.[4] There are hospitals attached to factories and mines.
During the rule of Kim Il-sung, effective mandatory health checkups and immunization
programs were initiated.[5] The country could support a large corps of doctors due to their low
salaries. The number of doctors remains high, though there is a shortage of nurses, meaning that
doctors often have to perform routine procedures.

07. Language:
The Korean language actually has a variety of dialects (also known as saturi). For example, the
tone of Korean in Seoul is quite different from that of Pusan, even though both are in South
Korea.
Both North and South Korea's standard language is based on the dialect spoken from the Seoul
area, but the language spoken now days in North Korea has probably been influenced quite a bit
by the Pyongyang dialect.

Official Language:
The Korean language (한국어/조선말) is the official and national language of both Koreas:
the Democratic People's Republic of Korea(North Korea) and the Republic of Korea (South
Korea), with different standardized official forms used in each territory. It is also one of the two
official languages in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture and Changbai Korean
Autonomous County of the People's Republic of China.
Historical and modern linguists classify Korean as a language isolate; however, it does have a
few extinct relatives, which together with Korean itself and the Jeju language (spoken in the Jeju
Province and considered somewhat distinct) form the Koreanic language family. This implies
that Korean is not an isolate, but a member of a small family.
Spoken versus written language:

 When speaking
o You tend to use language that’s less clear.
o You use more pronouns.
o You use more “ums, ahs, and hmms”.

 In general, writing tends to be:

o More formal (even though the way people write on the Internet has helped it
become more informal)
o More precise
o More flexible since you can edit yourself

with Seoul on reunification issues despite receiving large amounts of international aid and
support. When President Bill Clinton welcomes South Korean President Kim jong-un to a
