SYLLABUS
 
I.      COURSE TITLE: ED 217 COUNSELING PRINCIPLES & TECHNIQUES

II.    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is a three-unit course in the master’s level that focuses on the development of
basic counseling skills that will serve as a guide to teachers who will encounter
pupils / students manifesting some behavioral or personal problems.  

 III.      COURSE OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the semester, the students shall be able to:

1.   learn and practice basic counseling/interpersonal skills;

2.   discuss counselor characteristics and behaviors that influence the helping


process including age, gender, cultural differences, verbal and nonverbal
behaviors, ethical and legal issues, personal characteristics, orientation, and
skills;

3.   discuss client characteristics and behaviors that influence helping processes


including age, gender, cultural differences, verbal and nonverbal behaviors,
personal characteristics, traits, capabilities, and life circumstances;

4.   identify the attitudes, values, and beliefs which, according to selected


theories, facilitate change and growth;

5.   understand, recognize, and implement counseling techniques necessary for


an effective initial interview;

6.   assess personal assets, limitations, and reactions to theories and develop an


initial personal philosophy of counseling and how people change; and

7.   begin the process of conceptualizing clients’ issues.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND BASES FOR RATING:

1. Active and intelligent participation in class discussions


2. A Case Study:  a case study describing a specific case that you have
experienced or experiencing at present and how it was or being resolved
utilizing one or more of the concepts discussed in the course. The case study
has to be submitted using the font Garamond in size 12.

3. Wifi Connection or Mobile Data 


4. Report on the topic assigned utilizing powerpoint presentation which shall be
submitted to the undersigned.
5. Final Examination
6. Source-acknowledgment in all requirements that will be turned-in 
7. Fulfillment of other requirements posted in the Edmodo Classroom

NOTE:  All papers and requirement that will be turned-in may be submitted or cross-referenced
online to check for plagiarism.
