someone when they're dying how to care

for them

[Music]

assisting assisting

third weekend Chenrezig cycle

for those who are interested it's a very

profound practice we're doing it as a

retreat but not a live-in retreat

however considering how far it is from

here I suggest you check in with people

up there for a place to stay

you won't want to be driving back and

forth if you choose to go

and news about ricochet for those you've

been getting the emails he's out the ICU

he's eating he's feeling a bit better

he's still in the hospital but feeling a

bit better and they're looking towards a

discharge

and we like to remind everyone that this

teachings being stream

[Music]

because mahamudra the essence of

Mahamudra is guru yoga and because

Rinpoche is currently in the hospital

although he is doing a little better

he's out of the ICU they're still not

quite sure of the cause but he's doing

better and we're looking towards a

discharge in a few days back

so I would like to do the long life

prayer do you all have copies now

unfortunately the only copy here is in

English you guys know I have to do it in

English but I'm going to do it in

Tibetan because that's the original and

we can all do it at the same time does

that work for you all who will be kuzey

[Music]

so this is a teaching the six nails of

Naropa a very few words and very

profound meaning there's not a lot to

say about it

either you understand what is pointed at

or you don't

- look at this what is it that

interferes with you recognising

actualizing your innate enlightenment

how are you resisting enlightenment we

think we're trying to get in life but

actually enlightenment is a completely

natural state it isn't something that

you have to be good enough to get it

isn't an attainment and acquisition or

something you have to live up to and it

certainly isn't whatever you happen to

think it is because it is in the parent

in us it does not come and go it is

always present never lost

yet simply yes

all of the Dharma every last bit of it

is methods that teach you to let go of

your resistance to enlightenment have

you noticed how well we resist

we're instantly addicted to our

obsession with stuff we obsessed with

stuff all the time

sometimes we obsess with Dharma stuff

other times we obsess with andriy food

entertainment beer wine tomorrow

yesterday

but we're always obsessing with famous

even ideas are a kind of thing phenomena

has both inner and outer aspects the

inner aspect of phenomena your thoughts

and your feelings and the outer aspect

of phenomena objects buildings trees

things you think are outside of you just

like you think your thoughts and your

feelings are inside of you

nah

inside and outside is a bit of an

illusion you've made it up it's another

thought that you subscribe to that you

maintain

this obsession

is the actual creator of duality this

obsession is the root of the push-pull

whatever is going on in this moment just

as it is there is an underlying angst or

kick that you are feeling it's not quite

right you need to do something to make

it better and there's your oops

the oops of dissatisfaction with the

mound with what you are thinking right

now with what you're feeling right now

with what you're perceiving with your

sense organs right now you want to make

it better be because you're not as happy

as you want to be and you think that by

poking and stuffy poking at your

thoughts thinking good thoughts not bad

thoughts

poking at your feelings doing things to

cheer you up

taking drugs or having a glass of wine

talking to a friend reading a book

playing on YouTube whatever it is you do

to make yourself feel better as you're

not satisfied with how you actually feel

in the

whatever it is and stuff is not quite

right

for instance this coffee which appears

to be outside of me I want it inside of

me so I'm looking about it with stuff I

want to be happier or more awake I want

you to be satisfied I want to do a good

job of teaching all of this is hopes and

fears

hopes and fears are the result of the

original moves the basic misapprehension

misperception that there is an inside

and an outside

when you see and I've taken you out

before to see the sparkle in the sky do

you remember doing that with me is that

sparkle inside your eyeballs or atoms

died

you see it isn't exactly either it's an

interaction between your eyeballs and

the sky

and interaction between the teeny tiny

blood vessels in your retina and the

luminous sky when those things interact

a certain kind of light and retinas

would be blood though you perceive the

sparkles and they seem very real and

they're an excellent symbol of aliveness

of vitality because without you being

having your eyeballs with blood

circulating in them and without the

luminosity of the sky they can't be

perceived

you the perceiver are not separate from

your perception now we go no.4 here

exactly at we perceive with our sense

organs

heads are not Russia yes some heads I'm

getting a nod

so you are aware that perception is an

interaction of thoughts feelings and

sensations without the sense organ they

don't happen but without the labeling

and the feeling about them they also

don't happen when you perceive a thing

the ignorance which accompanies every

perception the naming of it Dorji

containing all the connotations of

everything you know about dorjee's and

the subtle feeling liking disliking of

the Dorji it's all there in that very

moment of seeing it and if you see

something that you have no context for

you will probably pick the nearest thing

to it in appearance that you do have

context for and name it to yourself bat

this is how the Bardo experiences are

both real and cultural

if you are unfamiliar in the bardo with

the Tibetan an Theon you might not name

what you are seeing hearing feeling

smelling perceiving fierce or a peaceful

love but you will have the same

experience sense orally in your

non-existent sense organs as a Tibetan

who is very familiar with that and

beyond you'll just name it something

else perhaps if you've never seen that

before

especially in the first part of where

you're very similar to we were in your

last life

before you go through changes in the bar

to of becoming
the first statement is don't remember

let go of what has passed let go of what

you think has passed

none of your memories of your life

actually happened the way you remember

them what you remember is a bit blah a

heap a clump a tangle of your thoughts

about what happened your feelings about

what happened and your perceptions of

what happened and when you remember

something from being in a good mood you

will remember it weight differently than

when you remember the same day or

occurrence when you're in a depressed

mood - one mood it's how resilient you

were as though and how you one is the

whole take on it to another mood it's

how we were armed

none of us know the pass it flexes it

fluxes time is not linear

doctor who added best worm a squirmy

ball of tiny whiny stuff it is possible

to send blessings into the past and

change certain aspects and memories of

the past this is all what we're going to

be learning in that generation retreat

next week

two weeks my time census for me yeah

where me swarming although most people

because of their habit of the linear

thought be incarnate a few years into

the future

a few years into the future those who

have managed to release themselves from

that are not bound by that it is

possible to have your future life

dovetail with someone else's past life

for example in dream time when I meet

with students sometimes it happens for

them sometime before it happens for me

I'm otherwise distracted I'm not out in

the dream time doing anything and then a

few weeks later I am and it turns out I

am doing what they had sent me an email

that I hadn't read two weeks ago that I

did this is not unusual dream time

crosses time easily your belief system

about the linear ality of time it's

simply something you have been taught

when the American a Native Americans

danced the clown dances whenever they

danced the dance of a white man is

recognizable because they strap a large

alarm clock in fact the standard is how

do you kill a white man take away his

wristwatch he'll starve you won't know

when to eat and actually had experiences

that really show the difference

culturally from those of this culture

who firmly believe in the reality of

that thing they're hanging on the wall

once what mom and I were traveling we

were out on one of the reservations in

the Midwest and looking for a camping

spot and for what was interesting around

there and we came to a tourist office

filled with white folks and we went in

and we asked them some questions who are

looking for a while offsprings we heard

about and they didn't know but they say

you have to go ask the Native American

Center but they're probably not there

you know they may have no time sense

they don't turn up on time you know

they're never there so we wander off to

the Native American Center here's this

like Quonset hut with a tin roof boiling

in the hot Sun with the door closed I

wouldn't be in there in either so I look

around and there's a flash of red down

by the creek so I wander down by the

creek and there this is the office set

up on card tables down by the creek and

one of them says oh you found us means

you're sensible those white folks just

don't get it she asked if we had a white

person working here to be sitting there

getting nothing done but pretending so

our culture has the time thing worse

than many others the word in Hindi for

tomorrow and yesterday is the same

the word in Tibetan for yesterday can't

mean literally yesterday or sometime

back when I asked the Tibetan when is

New Year's a couple of weeks before New

Year's and they're already prepping oh

it's coming soon

they don't know nothing is more than

sunny Nani Jeanne gloomy four days it's

not within the next four days gives some

time and the same words for the past if

it's not within the past four days of

sometimes I have a lot of fun with the

sponsors that question did you get the

check from so-and-so

oh I once had a check from so-and-so

this is one from six months ago they're

asking about I got one some time ago

this could be anything from one year to

four years

we'll never know when that

do you see how we obsess with time

technology our level of technology to

some extent requires that or yeah to

some extent not completely only the

Swiss make the trains run on time and

they're really proud of it

the point I'm making the more you think

about what happened the more you are

entrenching false memories that is not

what happened not the way you think it

did even at the time it was not

happening the way you thought it was now

as I have Asperger's I tend to think a

bit weirdly and I can think of a number

of things that have happened in my life

that to me seemed quite funny story

worth dining out on

and I've tried telling people and they

look horrified and shocked

mmm

but it was funny

the time I got getting ready to pile of

I couldn't stop laughing they

weren't able to get me down it weren't

very big a couple of three soldiers I'm

sorry to me at the time it was funny I

was drunk out of my mind walking through

the jungle of having a sex fantasy after

getting drunk with Alana that I really

wanted to jump and not managing he

declined and there I am walking through

the jungle having a mildly kinky sex

fantasy me

oh and I've been reading William

Burroughs a bit do you see why I thought

it was funny

Indians are not particularly well found

so physically it wasn't a problem

but you see why when I try to tell that

story people often don't get it

especially right after when I come back

you know totally covered with all sorts

of weird trying to have it wash off

in the faucet we didn't have showers

there and I can't stop laughing because

just the juxtaposition of the way things

came through was for me funny now that's

a memory

did it really happen like that I don't

know that's what I remember

do you see what I mean how you take

things at the time combined with your

personality later do you tend to rewrite

things to make you a victim or do you

tend to rewrite things somewhere without

even than we are of it to make it funny

or do tend to rewrite things to make

yourself a hero we have a really good

example in politics of rewriting things

hmm he believes his thoughts and he is

very good egocentric Lee about rewriting

the past to make himself bigger more

important - which way do you do it how

do you rewrite the past you victimize

yourself am I always a victim do you

make yourself bigger am I always the

fierce chief who wins are you always

trying to find the funny in it all and

rewriting it so there's a punchline this

is not to other people this is in your

own mind to yourself how do you relate

to your memories

the point that's open for comment open

for question because how do you relate

to your own memories it's going to be

really important in their effect on

youth how you tell yourself the story

again and again is what happened for you

yes I'm asking this is a participatory

class right there in the moment that was

the traitor I I'm trying to find some

sort of a rationale and that questions

behavior and explain everything from

that situation

wait was we kind of were acting in this

way a soulless negative situation hasn't

happened and is this working for you

I've got less painful memories memories

of less people and I feel like a little

bit more but the way the working part of

it is

yes not love everything I can I can

handle that way but

and what about yourself I'm in EMDR

there apparently and so that's about it

breathe
and I do

a way to breathe in that memory and I

find at least the way I'm receiving it

and I find that to be really good

because there's a frozenness that occurs

and then when you find the breath in

that memory that helps you if you come

to a similar situation and to have the

breath without the frozen because I

cannot use my mind together through my

my mind does not work to create breath

unless I'm actually breathing so this

like the method I'll be teaching in two

weeks are all very possible ways of

working with past memories that bother

you

they're not so Jim I'll be teaching

Tantra yours is EMDR and yours appears

to be a Western psychological method yes

Mellie's gonna snatch game really

players to get ready truthful and don't

wait

like well I didn't do this because

not really it's me my feelings my box so

get clear with myself you can tell

yourself a story mm-hmm sometimes what I

am annoyed at something Grouch tends to

be my thing I chew I'll get grouchy

about something kid left the light on

again you know it stupid stuff and I

will notice myself ranting to myself

quite insane

anybody else find themselves doing that

occasion do you recognize it while it's

happening because that's important when

you recognize it while it's happening

don't force yourself to stop see

thoughts for what they are while you

continue ranting to yourself making a

stupid explanations for why this happens

to yourself don't recall is Mohammad

Rafi let go now

the methods we're talking here each of

you has come up with are all valid

camera methods maybe you're going to

teach another valid career method these

involve doing in Mahamudra

my compadre is not done it is a not

doing so because of this the method in

dealing with memories traumas is not to

rewrite them in some way not to take

them apart in some way

not to try to be honest with oneself in

some way not to apply a mantra and

visualization in some way not to apply a

physical yogic method in some way all

those are very valid Kiran methis and if

they're working for you there's nothing

wrong with them

however the Maha mudra method is very

simple but a little bit difficult to

actually not do

it is a matter of letting go this is

done by while remembering the past

looking at open awareness at the

infinite vast openness of dharmakaya

nature of mind proceeding that in all

its vitality while seeing those memories

the descriptions of memories arising and

vanishing as no thing in nowhere

nothing happens

the last words of 16

hmm nothing happens

in this moment which is all there is

this now this very now there are no

other nouns this now permeates the

entire past and future by creating a set

of memories and plans

none of which happened the way when you

are dreaming at night and you dream you

are an old man with some grandkids and a

dog walking somewhere that old man has

memories that he thinks about in the

dream maybe who remembers his dog as a

puppy maybe thinks about the grandkids

and remembers from being younger or his

own kids being younger and you wake up

and you're not an old man

you're a woman having a completely

different life than the one you dreamed

those memories were very real for that

individual in the now of that dream but

they do not have any

reality of their own

your memories are real for you you are

made of memories that go back

consciously and unconsciously thousands

and thousands of years infinite time the

ones that come up in any given moment

that you think about in any given moment

influence how you feel in that moment

but none of them

have more reality than your plans

all the memories that add up to make up

the personality of la melena

and yet they are real for me in this

moment as I think about them and they

create the personality of this moment

that is calling itself la melena

but they have no reality beyond their

impact on this moment they're arising in

this moment

they do not serve you will let go

letting go is a really important word to

understand that is not letting go that

is not letting go

that is letting go

it has neither push or pull by let go of

your memories that does not mean push

them away that means stop clutching them

to define yourself

on a bad day me before coffee I know

better than to do much thinking them

because if I happen to be in a bad mood

I will start thinking about all the

memories that make me a terrible person

that wouldn't be a good movie I'll start

thinking of all the memories that make

me a wonderful person it's not real and

yet it affects the map if you can let go

of it

now not

dependent

on what you think happened in the past

you can approach each moment much more

cleanly

you remind me of someone

my

so it would be very easy for me to

approach you in light of that memory and

have that person their personality in

our past interactions affect my

relationship with you

and we do that all the time

many of our subliminal prejudices arise

out of that

do you react differently to a white guy

in a suit and an afro-american in a

sweatshirt both fairly large both

walking down the street at night and

you're going to pass them

does your heart beat differently it's

got nothing to do with what's going on

right now it's a whole bunch of things

that fell into the now from your

memories in the past of news articles of

experiences of things people have said

to you how many of you guys and women

think of yourselves as feminists

okay how many of you think that you act

24/7 as such completely free of gender

overlays subtly you will treat a man and

a woman different

subtly if you are a woman you are going

to be encouraged to let the guy carry

the heavy thing

see it in yourself

and he guys here with bad backs as gonna

say it's a real track for you if you

don't look young and strong and you have

a bad back and all the women expect you

to carry you and you don't even know

you're doing that this is how our

memories keep us from being clean in the

now

yes

question above the relationship if you

would be aware of and subliminal stuff

that you're talking about

be happy at this point to give

everything away that I know and

but and I do that that consignment

like but still even if I do that there's

something for me there are two ways

actives three ways of approaching

subliminal baggage in the Tibetan system

there are many more ways in the world

the first way is through the path of

Sutra which is rather similar to self

analysis coming to understand what has

happened and deciding to do other things

to make different things happen in the

future

then there's Tantra we're using symbols

you clean it out of the subconscious

[Music]

fruition and this is where you simply

whenever you find yourself remembering

anything for you anything you let go

right where that thought was right where

the current thought is right where the

next thought will be is in

fast indescribable vital

awareness

pay attention to that rather than the

memories this is your key but the key to

it is at all times and in all situations

so it doesn't work if you just do it for

an hour in the morning you have to

open your sphincter of attention again

and again

until even while thinking it does not

close you may in this process experience

a side effect of space eNOS it should be

temporary don't fight it

it's a young it'll bass you can pray to

your root teacher to get you a spat

there's a time when opening your

attention into infinity while thinking

distracts you from what you're thinking

because you do not see clearly yet that

your thought is that infant it is made

of that infinity

the thought you are thinking right now

is arising in your mind it has neither

substance nor duration and this one is

the same and this one is the same and

they're all without the least bit of

exception like that watch them right now

we're all thinking I don't know nothing

goes they arise in infinite open

awareness they have never been anything

but infinite open awareness they can't

hurt you unless you on some level

entertain them make them a cup of tea

and vitami and make them cookies this is

our obsession with phenomena this is one

of the phenomena memories thoughts of

the past

all thoughts without exception arise in

mind and dissolve in mind not one of

them is more real than any of this you

cannot find the way it really happened

you cannot find the truth there isn't

anything to hang on to or let go of sit

here and think and watch it do that

don't think about that think about

something else think about pterodactyls

or aardvarks

and while you think look at those

thoughts and see them for what they are

while you're at bank enough

remember this morning before you came

here

looking for your shoes trying to figure

out which socks to put on if you wear

socks

remember the drive over

if you remember a dream you have had

previously think about that for a moment

remember the dream remember the memories

in the dream because the dream

encompassed more than a few moments so

the dream had a little story so towards

the end of the dream the beginning of

the dream was in the memories

remember that does it feel any different

than your memories of this morning does

it look any different

you want to do a harder one little more

risky pick something that is bothering

you

since it is not happening in this very

moment memories are involved for

instance you may be broke but there's

nothing to buy in this moment you may be

bothered by being broke but since

there's nothing to buy in this moment

that has no bearing on this moment you

simply remember that later if you want

to go buy something you don't have the

money to do it to memory

you see how the awareness of the

infinite open this seems to flicker

thoughts get interesting you start

reciting what you've said but we writing

it or what you wish you said or what you

won't they earn from what you said that

was mine that flicker is a sign that

you're still in the space eNOS space

that flicker is not real that flicker

you're feeling is you're still sort of

flicking from the bulk to the emptiness

bulk to emptiness you're not seeing the

two as the very same thing with no

separation keep looking it takes a while

until it doesn't flicker until both are

obviously the same thing your memories

and the infinite open awareness in which

they arise as thoughts and into which

they dissolve as thoughts

do not attack your most traumatic

memories in the beginning keep

increasing the intensity of the memory

you're using as it gets too easy if you

find no flicker and it seems completely

obvious then start on a traumatic memory

wait for them to really try it with

those in the meantime leave those be

where they are don't mess with them and

strengthen them by going over them again

and again this is so Jenna there are

other methods that do involve going over

them again and again in certain ways you

get a choice whether to do so again or

Tantra or Sutra it is not required that

you do it one way or the other

did you have a question

the bothersome memories it's yes we

can't separate thoughts and feelings and

just trying to see no difference between

the memory of me looking for my socks

and that that sensitive memory certainly

I'd use the difference because there is

much more stuff present in the in the

sensitive memory with the emotion and

the physical tension

looking for my socks this morning

definitely had an emotion in here have I

lost my good brown socks and there was a

physical sensations going on it was

barely noticeable comparable is stronger

when you're getting closer to something

that rivals in your emotions so in

reality you cannot separate pause from

emotions from perceptions they are so

intertwined

interpenetrating interactive for you to

have an emotion it gets an

angry grouchy oh joy all of these as

soon as you know what you're feeling

that's a thought when we do practices

I'm working with emotions in order to

work directly with emotions we pretend

that thoughts and emotions can be

separated just as when we work with

thoughts we pretend that thoughts and

feelings can be separated really they

can't they're all in there together but

when we try to work just with feelings

we separate from justice it's a little

easier to try one and then the other and

then combine it so to work with feelings

the first thing you do is strip the

feeling naked of its story the feeling

story is why you feel that then you take

off its underwear its underwear is the

knee and they do very interesting things

once you do that provided you managed

not to enter the bathroom not to rewrap

it up with something

in this case when we're working with

memories

we start with memories that do not have

a lot of intense physical sensations and

emotions we can later once we can see

through those reliably see them for what

they are what they're made of is

thoughts see the emotions for what

they're made of as a combination of

physical sensation we got to do it

working with emotions down here one day

have I done that here we gotta do it

although it's better done as a weekend

as a few days people need time so let's

look at that when I get back from India

yeah because you guys need to work on

that retreat as you work with thoughts

because you're right they're all mixed

in together and the more intense the

emotional sensations occurring attached

to a certain memory the more it will be

difficult for you to see it for what it

is because it will distract you

actually it's interesting that

convenient you asked this question from

you

I kind of feel it's easier for me to

work with emotions and thoughts I get

the idea of stripping emotion they can

go and then just sitting with it just

feel the energy abandon the store let

then do that first before you try to get

all the thoughts lined up is it's easier

for you

it is not easier for Tibetans however

you are a Western woman you are not in

Tibetan monk you are not seriously macho

any of you guys here really kind of

macho or women yeah I'm pretty macho

which means I got a do thoughts first

not feelings because I don't want to

know about those damn things me you know

the whole macho trip and the only thing

that could be really serious as they had

cold and those are terrible yes

experiences are not just emotions and

families they're sensing and so I'm just

curious when you're undressing and

taking up not all thoughts are made of

words you can have a thought that is not

made of words dogs think you've seen

your dog think and feel you've seen your

ethic you've seen squirrels sit and

contemplate the bird feeder for a while

and then do something that works it

thought how to get in there so in this

case you can have nonverbal thoughts we

start with the verbal ones because

they're easy to get at we do remember

sensations but only in traumatic PTSD do

they return to us rather than get named

it smelled like rotting meat there at

that time a childhood memory I don't

smell it now I remember what it smelled

like but if I'm having a PTSD flash i

will actually smell it in the moment on

flashing I don't have a lot of PTSD

these days so that hasn't happened for a

while but I know what

that is although the I had

flashbacks to would be silly for anybody

else to consider a drama and it's not

the stuff that other people would

consider a drama

well there's one yeah one time my

teacher yelled at me I flashbacks for

years

Oh yelled at me for pointing at another

kid was talking to myself and moving my

hands she said I gave the kid the finger

[Laughter]
I hadn't met this yet so I was utterly

confused Wharf eyed and couldn't explain

myself and that was seriously traumatic

to the point that I can almost still

smell the playground getting in

gunfights no problem walking down the

street with somebody pointed a revolver

at my back yelling I'm gonna

kill you get back here I'm figuring he's

bluffing or at least calling his bluff

no problem that wasn't traumatic that

was kinda funny

so and this is Asperger's we remembered

stuff here we're neurologically hooked

up kind of in strange ways but even

though what it is that traumatizes me

may seem strange to you the traumatic

feelings are going to be the same I'm

human enough to have all that the same

it's just what's and how I explain

things while they're happening it's a

little bit eccentric you know that young

girl who's the big climate activists is

also an athlete

do you understand what I'm getting at

with memories do you understand the

instructions for how to let go of

memories the instructions here just says

let go

however I don't think you can most of

you without a little bit more words

about to stroke your

opens because it's not a muscle that

you're accustomed to none of us are as

sentient beings understand the

instructions while thinking about while

thinking of memories while remembering

things that do not have a lot of

emotional connotation a little I am

worried about not finding my socks but

Arden I mean but it was there a little

bit while remembering see what those

memories are made of open the orifice of

your attention do not shift your

attention back and forth

it's from narrow focus on a thing to

broad focus on the vastness of mind

itself it's pity we only have the word

focus to use for those two

focuses because they're not the same so

relax the orifice of your attention let

it naturally fall open while remembering

innocuous things

oops and fears are the two ends of the

bungee cord that attaches into samsara

what you will vote for and what you will

fear in the future will be based on the

memories you are entertaining

[Laughter]
your wrist snap it every time you say

everything should don't snap it just

enough see if that cuts that one out

if you're stuck on one particular kind

of thought for many of us not for all of

us but for many of us should is an

underlying hum it is conditioned by your

parents and your culture you should

brush your teeth twice a day three times

has even better you should eat your

vegetables we're constantly laying

shifts on our kids and in school you

should do your homework work ethic you

should have a job and make a success of

your life

that's cultural you should be doing

everything differently anymore that's

one of the ways that we understand our

parents continuously trying to create us

as the person they think we should be

yeah should be functional should be a P

should be academically succeeding should

be healthy should be and raising a kid

I'm guilty of this it's useless

the words should could and would honor

yep they're all not and that is our next

nail let go of plans of planning we are

constantly remembering the past and

planning the future to get away from the

now
and yet there is no past and no future

have you ever had a plan go forth the

way you planned it ever hey I even

planned to take this object in my hand

into the bedroom and end up setting it

down on the table and getting distracted

by something else even my little plans

go astray bet they didn't work out

exactly the way you planned I'm just

kind of sort of close in the ballpark

sometimes they do come up better yeah so

in this instructions part of letting go

of the past is letting go in the future

as well

to be on time I hope this not so our

hopes Samantha not met so essentially

that the here we are working either with

ears or attachments in the context of

the future essentially just seeing okay

I hope this yep that's what we do

stop it here is some exercise that might

help at lunchtime take a walk

without planning a to-do list during the

walk place your feet one in front of the

other and see what happens

see where you get to do look both ways

for cars this is not instead of common

sense this is with common sense yeah

this reminds me of when I was a kid when

my mom would take my brother and I get

in the car and she'd start driving I

said where are we going mom she goes I

don't know if the cars taking this let

how often do you let that happen in your

life now

those of you who are sometimes letting

that happen are doing well most of us

how long is your to-do list guys

everybody with a list of more than ten

things raise their hand

yes but no nothing good that's what are

designed to do is drop your to-do list

yes but you don't have to go clothes

shopping you don't have to go buy

jewelry you don't have to clean your

jewelry

it simplifies life you don't even have

to cook supper if you're if you

physically need an eating leftovers and

if not leave it be so you don't have to

make a meal every night you know how

much time can be spent

when I'm with Russia Russia likes to eat

three times a day you know how much

effort it is to cook three meals of date

or someone day in day out and lack joy

did most of the cooking is when I was

trying if I tried to cook and translate

at the same time I need to blow the

translation of her and supper I am NOT a

multitasker some people are

try allowing yourself a period of time

every day without a plan

it is easier outside of the house less

guilt-ridden because your to-do list is

usually in the house so walk out the

door for half an hour and don't plan

don't even plan if you're gonna turn

left or right at the corner usually we

do I'll walk out on wall cap of blood so

well I think I'll go over to that cafe

there when a plan see if you can resist

planning for half an hour while taking a

walk

and they get the thoughts as the plan

for those of you in that moment right

it's easier because it's easier than

memories unless they're doing one thing

we always really want something I find

plans and memories equally hearted and

equally easy

I don't they don't feel different to me

but then I time does not look linear to

me right tell you about that time room

who she and I were in two places at once

this was way back when he was first

building singer monasteries and we got a

ship where we could go to Mandy and buy

some cement we needed to cement it was

rationed in those days and we had a

raishin so we went into Mandy I went

with him to translate into English

because a lot of the bigwigs having a

westerner and all that it's kind of

helps your status and stuff we went and

we talked to the bank and we went and we

talked at the cement company my Hindi I

think was a bit better than the

appreciation in those days and we did

all these things all day and Mandy that

was the day he caught me lighting my

Joel on fire we've been doing all this

stressful stuff in the bank and I

slipped out behind the bank dab of smoke

so I'm standing in the alley with a

little Biddy and remember shakeups well

I wasn't smoking in front of her Boucher

then so I dropped it

I'll be here in a minute I think he

might have wandered back here to take a

piss but when he saw my Jolla smokey he

stood there and talked to me until it

actually bursts hmm two places

continuing with that so we spent the

whole day and came home with a truckload

of a rented truck full of cement which

we had some workers unload and then he

once we got the cement home he didn't

need me so he was by where sicker gamma

was supervising the unloading and I say

you know do you need me anymore he says

no I said well I'm gonna go on up can

you grab anything for you before the

shops closed because it was evening I

said yoga me cauliflower so I got him

his vegetables and they deal so about

halfway up there's a resting spot

there's a spring so I sat down at the

spring to take a rest cuz I was carrying

you know a lot of vegetables and there's

a westerner coming down who stopped at

the spring and began to praise my

translation and how grateful he was to

me for having translated for Russia that

day for the teachings up in his cave

so I listened and then I went on up

Andrew Bush his cave was closer to the

road than mine so I stopped in Russia

escaped and he was sitting there I said

didn't I just leave you in town how did

you get past me on the path I didn't see

you and he said ah and then I said

Russia where were we today and I watched

his eyes get big and then he said

and I realized that I remember it being

in Mandi all day and I remembered

translating for that girl who looked

vaguely familiar when I saw her on the

path and these two memories did not line

up in a particular way they weren't

focused on a date they could have been

the same day they could have been a

different day very hard to describe them

they're just looking at each other he's

like wow she must have really needed

those teachings it wasn't on purpose it

just happened that kind of thing where

people walk through walls they don't do

it on purpose it just happens sometimes

yeah it was all really there it is not

unusual up in the caves to see Yogi's do

things that would be considered normally

impossible usually quietly and

discreetly and are quite surprised when

you pointed out to them afterwards and

often embarrassed that they got caught

the point I'm making is that the future

and the past are equally real in order

for that genre's it retreat that I'm

teaching in two weeks to actually work

for people they have to let go of their

clutch on a single point in the

space-time continuum called here and now

that whole retreat is about getting that

clutch loose across space and across

time yes I just wondered letting go

so there's attachment and is there a

difference between the attachment to my

scenario my life scenario and rushing

toward the teachings my attachment to

the teachings no the only difference is

that one may give you more happiness

than the other long-term

should you be invested in creating

happiness most of our plans involve

attempting to be happier than we are

right now for as long as you are

dissatisfied with this moment and

grasping after the next moment and

hanging on to the moment before it you

cannot get free

you have to let go of the stories of

what has happened and what will happen

but letting go is not throwing away or

rejecting this is not so much a refusal

to think of these things but rather a

combination of she named without an

object and thinking this is the

culmination of ultra now you are the

yoga of dancing stillness this is the

step involved with drew where you go

from Xin a to lack dog like dog is

meditating while thinking it's called

black Tom literally means direct seeing

it is direct seeing the nature of mind

while thinking feeling and perceiving

since as you are alive you will be

thinking feeling and perceiving because

it is a nature of life to do that your

thoughts feelings and perceptions are a

direct result of your being alive of the

innate all-pervading inherent vitality

of semi-big mind natural

if it were not vital if dharmakaya did

not have clear light nature then there

would not be thoughts feelings and

perceptions they are simply a sign of

the innate vitality of the sambhogakaya

do not reject them do not cling to them

you are that vitality also known as

awareness the see of what is seen the

feel of what is felt the perceiver of

what is perceived this relates to

sambhogakaya nature of mind where all

the gods are born it is the vitality or

the clear light nature of dharmakaya by

identifying yourself with your udimm in

Tantra you become more and more able to

identify with sambhogakaya made your

mind pure awareness the innate vitality

of the universe while directly

perceiving

the emptiness of phenomenon as it occurs

as it arises as it dissolves

there is no thinness arising and

dissolving
you cannot know this by understanding it

you can only know this by repeated and

concerted practice at all times on all

occasions recognize the already known

dharmakaya state of mind you are the

awareness which that is do not create

the duality of seeing dharmakaya as the

sky out there do not separate yourself

from dharmakaya nature of mind from sem

knee you understand dharmakaya

sambhogakaya nirmanakaya are not

separate things

they are simply different words for the

same thing

try over a lunchtime to take a little

walk without planning and to sit a

little bit and see the emptiness of

memories while they happen quite a bit

more this afternoon

a 1d newer doo-dah chuji saw

they're not

parked over on Trader Joe's you should

move they actually do change while

you're out and about there are some big

festivals this room will be closed

for supporting however if any of you

would like to adopt what a fire Yogi's

are yoginis take a car and email me that

you would like to do that
