MARINERS ANNOUNCE MINOR LEAUGE AWARDS FOR AUGUST
RHP Prelander Berroa named Pitcher of the Month;
INF Axel Sanchez and INF Riley Unroe named Co-Position Players of Month

SEATTLE, WA – Double-A Arkansas Travelers right-handed pitcher Prelander Berroa has been named Mariners Minor
League Pitcher of the Month for August, and Arkansas infielder Riley Unroe Low-A Modesto Nuts infielder Axel Sanchez
have been named Mariners Minor League Co-Position Players of the Month for August.

Berroa, 22, went 1-0 with a 1.33 ERA (3 ER, 20.1 IP) in 5 starts with Arkansas in the month of August. He limited opponents
to a .116 (8x69) average, while walking 12 and striking out 32. Berroa’s 14.16 strikeout per 9.0 innings were the 6th-highest
in the month of August among all Minor League pitchers (min. 20.0 IP). He allowed 1 earned run or less on all 5 of his starts
during the month, including 2 scoreless outings. Berroa and 4 Travelers relievers combined on a 9-inning no-hitter as
Arkansas defeated NW Arkansas 6-0 on Aug. 12. It marked the 2nd no-hitter by the Travelers this season. In the start,
Berroa (5.0,0,0,0,2,11) earned his 1st career Double-A win, allowing only 2 walks and striking out a career-high 11 batters
over 5.0 scoreless innings. He also earned Texas League Pitcher of the Week following his start. Berroa’s 1.33 ERA in
August was the lowest in the Texas League (min. 20.0 IP), while also ranking 2nd in lowest opponents batting average
(.116) and 3rd in strikeouts (32).

Berroa was acquired by the Mariners in a trade from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for INF Donavan Walton on
May 11. Following the trade, he made 13 starts with High-A Everett before being promoted to Arkansas on July 31. In 19
starts in the Mariners organization, Berroa is 3-3 with a 2.50 ERA (21 ER, 75.2 IP). He has limited opponents to a .147
(28x258) average, while walking 49 and striking out 119. Berroa’s 119 strikeouts are the 7th-most among all Mariners
farmhands this season. Berroa has appeared in 5 Minor League seasons with the Twins (2017-19), Giants (2019-22) and
Mariners (2022-c) in his career.

Sanchez, 19, reached base safely in 22 of 24 games, including 20 games with at least 1 hit (10 multi-hit games), with Low-
A Modesto during the month of August. Overall he hit .344 (33x96) with 19 runs scored, 10 doubles, 1 triple, 7 home runs,
29 RBI, 1 HBP, 12 walks and 4 stolen bases. Sanchez homered in 3 straight games, Aug. 2-4, combining to go 6-for-15
with 3 runs scored, 2 doubles, 3 home runs, 12 RBI, 1 walk and 1 stolen base. He homered and drove in a career-high 6
runs on Aug. 3 at Stockton (3x4, R, 2B, HR, 6 RBI). Sanchez reached base safely in 12 straight games to begin the month,
Aug. 2-16, batting .392 (20x51) with 12 runs scored, 6 doubles, 1 triple, 6 home runs, 26 RBI, 6 walks and 2 stolen bases.
He was named California League Player of the Week, Aug. 1-7, and is 1 of 3 Nuts to earn a weekly honor this season.
Among California League leaders in August, Sanchez ranked 1st in extra-base hits (18), 2nd in RBI (29), 2nd in slugging
percentage (.688), 2nd in total bases (66), T2nd in doubles (10), 3rd in OPS (1.110), T3rd in home runs (7), T4th in average
(.344) and T4th in hits (33). Among all Minor League players in August, Sanchez ranked T2nd in RBI (29), 6th in total bases
(66) and T6th in extra-base hits (18).

Sanchez has appeared 61 games this season combined between High-A Everett (4/21-6/24), Rookie ACL Mariners (6/7-
7/29) and Modesto (7/30-c). Overall he is batting .300 (67x232) with 37 runs scored, 17 doubles, 4 triples, 9 home runs, 40
RBI, 4 HBP, 24 walks and 13 stolen bases in 61 games. Sanchez was signed by the Mariners as an International Free
Agent on July 2, 2019. He made his professional debut with the DSL Mariners during the 2021 season.

Unroe, 27, reached base safely in 23 of 25 games with Arkansas in the month of August. He recorded at least 1 hit in 20
games, including 12 multi-hit contests, batting .419 (39x93) with 22 runs scored, 9 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, 21 RBI,
1 HBP, 16 walks and 8 stolen bases. He hit safely in a season-high 10 consecutive games, Aug. 12-23, batting .500 (20x40)
with 12 runs scored, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs, 1 HBP, 7 walks and 5 HBP. In the month of August, Unroe led the
Texas League in average (.419), hits (39) and on-base percentage (.500), while also ranking T1st in triples (2), 2nd in OPS
(1.124), 2nd in doubles (9), 3rd in total bases (58), T3rd in extra-base hits (13), T4th in stolen bases (8), 5th in runs scored
(22), 5th in slugging percentage (.624), T8th in RBI (21) and T10th in walks (16). Unroe’s .419 batting average in August,
ranked 3rd among all full season Minor League players, while also ranking 2nd in hits (39), 5th in on-base percentage (.500)
and 15th in OPS (1.123).

In 87 games with Arkansas this season, Unroe is batting .266 (82x308) with 48 runs scored, 13 doubles, 4 triples, 6 home
runs, 47 RBI, 2 HBP, 49 walks and 22 stolen bases. Unroe signed a Minor League contract with Seattle on Feb. 12, 2022.
He was originally selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2nd round of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Desert
Ridge High School in Mesa, AZ. Over 9 Minor League seasons, he is batting .242 (671x2778) over 791 career games.
