Instruction: On the space below, paste a cutout of any photograph that depicts an issue or problem in
science and technology. Then, answer the questions that follow.

solutions-of-air-pollution.php

1. What is the issue or problem depicted in the photograph?

 The issue or problem that I searched and observed in science and technology is
the result of how we, people in society used it. Vehicles and Facilities like
factories improve our lives as they make our transportation and production
process easier and better. However, being irresponsible and improper use of this
scientifically advanced technology resulted in pollution particularly air pollution
on the planet that has an impact on each one of us. Every person's personal and
professional life is significantly impacted by technology. It does, however, have
certain negative consequences. Technology problems are not caused by science
or the technology that the science inspires; rather, they are the result of
mistakes in the understanding that develops and uses this output of
technologies.

2. How does this particular issue or problem impact the well-being of humans today?
 Consider this: if there are no vehicles, we may become exhausted walking to our
destinations, and if there are no factories/facilities, we may not be able to
produce enough to meet people's wants and needs. However, our
irresponsibility and improper usage of science and technology result  in harmful
effects such as pollution, particularly air pollution. According to a  2016 report, 80
percent of the country's air pollution is caused by motor vehicles, with the
remaining 20 percent caused by stationary sources such as factories and open
burning of organic matter. This is extremely concerning because we all know that
our population is increasing over time which increases the possible rate of using
vehicles and facilities. According to the WHO, exposure to high levels of air
pollution can result in several negative health outcomes. It raises the risk of
respiratory infections, cardiovascular disease, and lung cancer. Children are
particularly vulnerable to air pollution. Asthma affects up to 14% of children
aged 5 to 18 worldwide, and causes include air pollution. Childhood cancers and
pregnant women are exposed to air pollution, which can have an impact on fetal
brain development.
 Moreover, have you ever heard of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change report? This discussion is about the 'irreversible' effects of global
warming. Air pollution from vehicles and factories is a major contributor to
climate change. From our population today, almost every family has one or two
vehicles used in everyday situations that caused unending traffic and emitted gas
that cause air pollution. Factory farming worsens climate change by emitting
massive amounts of greenhouse gases. Factory emissions alone account for
nearly two-thirds of global climate change emissions. Aside from health effects,
it could also result in the possibility of flash floods and landslides, which could
result in the destruction of homes, vegetation, and even lives. Protests are being
held all over the world to shut down large factories/facilities such as coal power
plants, but large corporations disagree. This is how capitalism disregards the
well-being of the majority. We now know that man-made climate change exists
and poses a serious threat to the planet and its people. If we do not address our
irresponsibility and improper use of these technologies which results in
pollution, we will face more than the pollution that will destroy the world which
includes our well-being as a human.

3. Why is it important for people to study and learn about STS as an academic field, especially in
addressing the issue or problem depicted in the photograph?
 Science, technology and society  is an important academic field to study and
learn. Science allows us to gain a better understanding of our current situation,
the past and present, and everything that surrounds us. Technology improves
our quality of life and creates paths for research and communication that we can
efficiently benefit from. It has also had a significant impact on education. Science
has given us a wealth of knowledge, and as a result, we have a large amount of
material either from printed or online sources. Moreover, it collaborates to
improve our society, as evidenced by the advancement of technologies, facilities,
transportation, and medicines.
 Although technological advancements and scientific knowledge have resulted in
some of the greatest achievements, they have also resulted in significant
disadvantages. The benefits of studying and applying science and technology in
our lives should not be the only consideration. By studying and learning STS as an
academic field would also consider its immediate and long-term effects on our
society especially in addressing the issue of pollution. It is unfortunate that as
much as we produce wants and needs for people, and provide the quickest way
to travel to our destination may result in natural occurrences due to our
irresponsibility and improper use of it. STS will allow us to understand and study
the benefits and drawbacks of the technologies that surround us. The principle
of using these technologies in  moderation. It is because our time on this planet
and the ozone layer of our planet are finite. You have a lot of things in your
houses, such as clothes, gadgets, and even vehicles, but could you ever live in a
world that is polluted and potentially disease-ridden? Science and technology
should improve our lives and the environment not become the reason for the
problem. Air pollution as shown above have numerous ways to solve by the use
of technology and science. This includes the use of renewable energy such as
solar and wind energy, proper waste disposal, moderation in the use of
facilities/factories and shutdowns of the over polluted facilities, and the use of
environmentally friendly vehicles (rechargeable  vehicles, or bicycles).
