PREFACE

Teaching and learning have gone so far by this time in the 21 st century allowing both educators
and learners to engage in many different modes and platforms in acquiring knowledge and skills, and
this is also caused by the existence of various technological advancements widely used by the current
generation all over the world. But there is a great challenge that we are facing right now --- the COVID
19 pandemic, that disallows the normal movements of all social endeavors including the education area.
How should educators address this situation without losing the value of education and maintaining the
academic standards in every discipline? That is what Ave Maria College has to address in all subjects
and courses offered by designing and engaging in a new modality of learning.

This course packet aims to align the teaching of Speech and Theater Artsin the new teacher
education curriculum that is anchored on the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers. This course
packet is designed to adapt to the new modality of teaching that Ave Maria College is using – the
flexible learning. This means that the school and home activities are deeply considered when the
facilitator of this course designed it in relation to the schedule of classes given by the school
administrators and as approved by CHED. In addition, this flexible learning used in this course includes
the use of online and offline resources, soft and hard materials in order for the students to experience a
balanced learning despite of the situation we are facing. The given topics and the equivalent class and
home activities can easily be obtained and done by the students through the use of hyperlinking method
in which the required and suggested materials are already attached and hyperlinked to the offline
software given to the students. Furthermore, having these changes that both teachers and learners are
going to embrace, the objectives of this course are still intact and achievable as evidently mentioned and
equalled with different tasks in the next following pages under the course outline specifically.

LESSON 1

I. COMMUNICATION PROCESS
The Communication is a two-way process wherein the message in the form of ideas,
thoughts, feelings, opinions is transmitted between two or more persons with the intent of
creating a shared understanding.

Simply, an act of conveying intended information and understanding from one person to
another is called as communication. The term communication is derived from the Latin word
Speech and Theater Arts 2
“Communis” which means to share. Effective communication is when the message conveyed by
the sender is understood by the receiver in exactly the same way as it was intended.

The communication is a dynamic process that begins with the conceptualizing of ideas by
the sender who then transmits the message through a channel to the receiver, who in turn gives
the feedback in the form of some message or signal within the given time frame. Thus, there are
seven major elements of communication process:

Sender: The sender or the communicator is the person who initiates the conversation and has
conceptualized the idea that he intends to convey it to others.
Encoding: The sender begins with the encoding process wherein he uses certain words or non-
verbal methods such as symbols, signs, body gestures, etc. to translate the information into a
message. The sender’s knowledge, skills, perception, background, competencies, etc. has a great
impact on the success of the message.
Message: Once the encoding is finished, the sender gets the message that he intends to convey.
The message can be written, oral, symbolic or non-verbal such as body gestures, silence, sigh,
sounds, etc. or any other signal that triggers the response of a receiver.
Communication Channel: The Sender chooses the medium through which he wants to convey
his message to the recipient. It must be selected carefully in order to make the message effective
and correctly interpreted by the recipient. The choice of medium depends on the interpersonal
relationships between the sender and the receiver and also on the urgency of the message being
sent. Oral, virtual, written, sound, gesture, etc. are some of the commonly used communication
mediums.
Receiver: The receiver is the person for whom the message is intended or targeted. He tries to
comprehend it in the best possible manner such that the communication objective is attained. The
degree to which the receiver decodes the message depends on his knowledge of the subject
matter, experience, trust and relationship with the sender.

Speech and Theater Arts 3

Decoding: Here, the receiver interprets the sender’s message and tries to understand it in the best
possible manner. An effective communication occurs only if the receiver understands the
message in exactly the same way as it was intended by the sender.
Feedback: The Feedback is the final step of the process that ensures the receiver has received
the message and interpreted it correctly as it was intended by the sender. It increases the
effectiveness of the communication as it permits the sender to know the efficacy of his message.
The response of the receiver can be verbal or non-verbal.

A. Functions of Communication
Basically, there are five functions of communication. These are control, social interaction,
motivation, emotional expression, and information dissemination.
1. Control – Communication functions to control behavior.
2. Social Interaction – Communication allows individuals to interact with others.
3. Motivation – Communication motivates or encourages people to live better.
4. Emotional expression – Communication facilitates people’s expression of their feelings and
emotions.
5. Information dissemination – Communication functions to convey information.
B. Features of an Effective Communication
In their pioneer book Effective Public Relations, Professors Broom, Cutlip, and Center
(2012) list the 7 Cs of Effective Communication. This list is widely used today, especially in
public relations and advertising.
1. Completeness – Complete communication is essential to the quality of the communication
process in general. Hence, communication should include everything that the receiver needs
to hear for him/ her to respond, react, or evaluate properly.
2. Conciseness – Concisenessdoes not mean keeping the message short, but making it direct or
straight to the point. Insignificant or redundant information should be eliminated from the
communication that will be sent to the recipient
3. Consideration – To be effective, the speaker should always consider relevant information
about his/her receiver such as mood, background, race, preference, education, status, and
needs, among others. By doing so, he/she can easily build rapport with the audience.
4. Concreteness – Effectivecommunication happens when the message is concrete and
supported by facts, figures, and real-life examples and situations. In this case, the receiver is
more connected to the message conveyed.
5. Courtesy - The speakershows courtesy in communication by respecting the culture, values,
and beliefs of his/her receivers. Being courteous at all times creates a positive impact on the
audience.
6. Clearness – Clearnessin communication implies the use of simple and specific words to
express ideas. It is also achieved when the speaker focuses only on a single objective in
his/her speech so as not to confuse the audience.
7. Correctness – Correctness in grammar eliminates negative impact on the audience and
increases the credibility and effectiveness of the message.

C. Barriers to Communication
There are instances when miscommunication and misunderstanding occur because of
certain barriers. The table below presents some barriers to effective communication with
corresponding solutions.

D. Verbal Communication and Nonverbal Communication
Verbal Communication refers to an interaction in which words are used to relay a
message. For effective and successful verbal communication, use words to express ideas which
can be easily understood by the person you are talking to. Consider appropriateness, brevity,
clarity, ethics, and vividness when engaging in this type of communication.

1. Appropriateness –The language that you use should be appropriate to the environment or
occasion (i.e., whether formal or informal).
2. Brevity – Speakers who often use simple yet precise and powerful words are found to be
more credible. Try to achieve brevity by being more direct with your words. Avoid fillers

Speech and Theater Arts 5

and insubstantial expressions which do not add to the message, such as “uh,” “you know,” “I
guess,” and others.
3. Clarity – The meanings of words, feelings, or ideas may be interpreted differently by a
listener; hence, it is essential for you to clearly state your message and express your ideas and
feelings.
4. Ethics – Words should be carefully chosen in consideration of the gender, roles, ethnicity,
preferences, and status of the person or people you are talking to.
5. Vividness – Words that vividly or creatively describe things or feelings usually add color and
spice to communication. Hence, you are encouraged to find ways to charm your audience
through the use of vivid words.

Nonverbal communication refers to an interaction where behavior is used to convey and

represent meanings. All kinds of human responses that are not expressed in words are classified
as nonverbal communication. Examples of nonverbal communication are stares, smiles, tone of
voice, movements, manners of walking, standing and sitting, appearance, style of attire, attitude
towards time and space, personality, gestures, and others.
1. It enhances and emphasizes the message of your speech, thus making it more meaningful,
truthful, and relevant.
2. It can communicate feelings, attitudes, and perceptions without you saying a word.
3. It can sustain the attention of listeners and keep them engaged in the speech.
4. It gives the audience a preview to the type of speaker you are.
5. It makes you appear more dynamic and animated in your delivery.
6. It serves as a channel to release tension and nervousness.
7. It helps make your speech more dramatic.
8. It can build a connection with listeners.
9. It makes you a credible speaker.
10. It helps you vary your speaking style and avoid a monotonous delivery

III.ESSAY
Instruction: Answer briefly the following questions:

1. Why is communication a two-way process?

Answer: The reason why communication is considered as a two-way process because of the sender and
the receiver of communication are exchanging ideas when they’re having conversation in which a
message is conveyed between two or more people in the form of ideas, thoughts, feelings, and views
with the objective of generating a shared understanding. Another idea is that when the receiver provides
feedback to the sender is what we called a two-way process of communicating. This informs the sender
that the message was correctly received by the receiver for the reason that the receiver focus his
attention in listening the statements of the sender which is why he/she got the statements which are
stated by the sender. Communication is also negotiated, which implies that the sender and receiver listen
to each other before gathering information to answer.

2. Enumerate and discuss the Features of an Effective Communication.

Answer: The features of an effective communication are completeness, conciseness, consideration,
concreteness, courtesy, clearness, and correctness. The first feature of an effective communication is
completeness in which this is very necessary for the overall quality in the process of communicating. As
a result, communication must avail all the receiver’s needs to hear in order to correctly respond, react, or
evaluate. Second feature of an effective communication is conciseness in which this feature doesn’t
imply that communication should be in said in a brief way, but rather it must be in a direct way and also
to the point. The information which is considered as irrelevant or redundant should be removed from the
communication that will be forwarded to the receiver. The third feature of an effective communication is
consideration in which the speaker should always take into account the significant information about his
or her recipient, such as mood, background, race, preference, education, status, and needs, among other
things, in order to be effective. As a result, he or she will be able to directly establish connection with
the audience. The fourth feature of an effective communication is concreteness in which when the
message that is disseminated is concrete and supported by facts, numbers, and real-life instances and
circumstances, it is considered as an effective communication. The receiver is more attached to the
message in this particular scenario. The fifth feature of an effective communication is courtesy in which
the speaker demonstrates civility in communication by giving respect to his or her receivers' culture,
values, and beliefs. Always being respectful expressed a favorable impression on the audience. The sixth
feature of an effective communication is clearness in which through utilizing of simple and specific
words to describe concepts is the best example of clarity in communication. It can also be done when the
speaker keeps his or her discourse focused on a particular goal in order to avoid confusing the listener.
The last feature of an effective communication is correctness in which by applying correct grammar
reduces the negative influence on the audience and boosts the message's trustworthiness and efficacy.

3. Enumerate and discuss the Functions of Communication

Answer: There are five functions of communication and these are control, social interaction, motivation,
emotional expression, and information dissemination. The first function of communication is control in
which this communication function focuses on the control of behavior. This function of communication
refers to the ability to regulate individual or group actions using words, gestures, and emotions. Say for
example, a parent telling a child not to misbehave or a police officer ordering people not to jaywalk but
to cross on the pedestrian lane. The second function of communication is social interaction in which this
function obviously means that we as humans have the right to have conversation to anyone. This
function also entails a comprehensive examination of common communication behaviors between
people in a variety of real-life situations. The third function of communication is motivation in which
the reason we are encourage to and motivated to continue living in this world because we’re happy

communicating wit the people around us. Another concept about this function is that when the speaker's
goal is to persuade or attempt to persuade another person to change his or her perspective, attitude, or
conduct, this is referred to as persuasion, wherein this implies that someone is persuading something
particularly a person. The fourth function of communication is emotional expression in which
sometimes or most of the time is that we expressed our feelings and emotions through communication.
The last function of communication is information dissemination in which this is what we usually do
everyday, wherein we consider communication as a way to disseminate information to other people.

ACTIVITY 1 – ESSAY WRITING

INSTRUCTION: Write an essay that talks about the importance of communication in your daily life.
Make sure to follow the basic format of an essay and the penmanship is legible.

“The Importance of Communication”

Communication refers to the act of sending information from one place, person, or organization to
another. A sender, a message, and a receiver are all part of every communication. This may appear to be
a simple concept, yet communication is actually a very complicated topic. A wide range of factors can
influence the message's passage from sender to destination. These factors include our emotions, cultural
context, communication medium, and even geographic location. The difficulty is why employers all
over the world prize good communication skills: accurate, effective, and unambiguous communication is
incredibly difficult. Communication is more than just the transmission of information, as this definition
demonstrates. The term implies that a message must be successfully transmitted or imparted, whether it
is information, ideas, or emotions. The sender, the message, and the recipient are the three components
of a communication. The message is 'encoded' by the sender, who uses a combination of words and
nonverbal cues to do so. It is sent in some form (such as voice or writing), and the recipient 'decodes' it.

Basically speaking, we humans considered communication as one of the most important skills that
we utilized and possessed. Perhaps the most crucial life skill is the ability to communicate effectively
and this is considered as factual to us humans. It is what allows us to communicate with others and
comprehend what is said to us by the other people that we talked to. To appreciate how fundamental the
desire to communicate is, just try to observe how a baby listening carefully to its mother and trying to
imitate the sounds she makes. Because of communication we change the world that is full of
misunderstanding and war. Communication made all the people in every country become united,
wherein the people in every country are helping each other to create traditions, cultures, and beliefs.
These are some of the proofs that will made us humans believe that people in our society in the present
are embracing harmonious society because of the language that we have. We’re going to use as an
example the situation of a baby in which its difficult for them to express what they feel because they are
still have no capabilities to talk. When they feel something they only cry so hard because that’s their
way of expressing their emotions and feelings. Sometimes they cried because of many reasons, wherein
maybe the baby is hungry, sick, bitten by an insect or irritated and it’s difficult for a mother to
experience this kind juncture. While in other field is that communication is can help us to boosts
knowledge sharing and innovation, wherein knowledge tends to lose its value if it is kept to your own
and never tend shared with the rest of the world. Only by sharing ideas, information, and knowledge can
they be expanded and improved, as well as how they might be applied in everyday living.
Communication across departments, as well as between management and staff, is critical for sharing and
increasing knowledge, as well as applying that knowledge to generate innovative ideas. Another thing is
that communication is important because it promotes team building. Building a team is an important part
of every company or organization. And communication is at the main basis of this procedure. Members

of a team, whether permanent or temporary, can only learn to trust each other and operate efficiently if
they communicate effectively, honestly, and on a regular basis. Communication breakdown among team
members is frequently a symptom of a team's demise. Another idea about the importance of
communication is that it will help us in building trust and relationship. One of the most essential reasons
for communicating is that it aids in the development of stronger interpersonal relationships and trust. It's
important to remember that communication is a two-way street, wherein speaking is an important aspect
of communication, listening is also important as well. So, if you want to strengthen your relationships
with others, don't only talk to them; listen to what they have to say. Communication will also help us to
develop your personality. Another reason communication is essential in everyday life because it aids in
the development and enhancement of your personality and self. This is because you are better able to
navigate the world and explore new and challenging situations when you communicate. You'll also meet
new individuals, many of whom will have different perspectives, experiences, and viewpoints.
Communication will also help us to solve our problems. Communication is the most effective technique
to resolve any dispute in your life or relationships. Not only that, but communication is a good approach
to avoid conflict in the first place in the majority of circumstances. Communication also aids in gaining
a deeper insight and knowledge of another individual. It aids in the clear communication of your
message. Effective communication also aids in the avoidance of misunderstandings and the swift
resolution of any that may emerge. Effective, honest, and consistent communication is, without a doubt,
the foundation of any successful and long-term relationship. Lastly, communication will help you when
it comes in improving your decision making. Decision-making is an important activity in practically
every aspect of life. Every day, people make decisions for a variety of reasons. The quality of those
decisions, on the other hand, is not always consistent. That is to say, not every decision people make will
result in the desired result. Our choices can sometimes backfire and result in an undesirable end.
Developing our communication abilities is one approach to reduce the possibilities of our decisions
resulting to unfavourable and occasionally even negative–results. This is because successful
communication allows you to receive more information than you would otherwise. Not only that, but the
quality of your data improves as well. Because you now have more information to draw upon before
making a decision, the quality of your decision-making will improve as a result of this increase in the
quantity and quality of information.

All the concepts and ideas that I stated serves as the proof that communication is very essential for
our daily living because it will help us in molding the physical, mental, and emotional aspect of our life.
The reason why sometimes we abruptly get new opportunities in our life because we possessed good
communication to others. Communication is the reason why the world experienced a harmonious society
and created various cultures, traditions and beliefs. Lastly, communication is also the reason of societal
evolution which help humans to embrace high technologies.

My Dream

I want to swim
In my dream
I want to fly
That’s why I need wings

I want to feel the rain

How it drops like a chain!
I want to touch the nature
How it creates beauty in the creature!

I want to smell the flower

How it blooms in the shower!!
I want to hear the voices of birds
How beautifully they sing from hearts!!

I want to live as my dreams

And
I want to die the after my dreams.
