PART B (25 MARKS)

(Avogadro number, NA = 6.022 × 1023 mol-1)

(Molar volume of gas at STP = 22.4 L mol-1)
(Molar volume of gas at RTP = 24.0 L mol-1)

QUESTION 1

a) Bromine has many types of oxoanions. Hypobromite ion can combine with hydrogen ion to
produce an oxoacid. Bromate ion can combine with cobalt(II) ion, Co2+ to produce
cobalt(II) bromate hexahydrate. Write the chemical formulae of the following substances.
i. hypobromite ion.
ii. the oxoacid produced.
iii. cobalt(II) bromate hexahydrate.
(3 marks)

b) Solid stearic acid, C18H36O2 undergoes combustion with oxygen gas to produce carbon
dioxide gas and water vapour. Write a balanced chemical equation with correct physical
states for the combustion of stearic acid.
(2 marks)

QUESTION 2

Naturally occurring titanium exists as five stable isotopes. Four of the isotopes are listed in the
following table. The atomic mass of titanium is 47.8671 amu.

Isotope Mass (amu) Percent (%)

Ti-46 45.9526 8.25
Ti-47 46.9518 7.44
Ti-49 48.9479 5.41
Ti-50 49.9448 5.18

a) Define the term isotope.

(1 mark)
b) Determine the mass of the fifth isotope of titanium.

QUESTION 3

A piece of magnesium ribbon, Mg with a mass of 0.400 g was reacted with exactly 22.2 mL of
1.50 M hydrochloric acid, HCl. The volume of hydrogen gas, H2 produced at 25.0°C and 1.0
atm is 400 mL.

(Relative Atomic Mass, g mol-1: Mg = 24.3, Cl = 35.5)

a) Using calculation, show that the measured amounts of Mg, HCl and H2 are
stoichiometrically consistent with the following chemical equation.

Mg (s) + 2HCl (aq) → MgCl2 (aq) + H2 (g)

(3 marks)

b) Calculate the maximum mass of magnesium chloride, MgCl2 that would be formed in this
reaction.

(2 marks)

QUESTION 4

Sulfamic acid is a white solid used by plumbers as a limescale remover. Sulfamic acid contains
14.42% by mass of nitrogen, N, 3.09% hydrogen, H and 33.06% sulphur, S. The remainder is
oxygen, O.

(Relative Atomic Mass, g mol-1: N = 14.0, H = 1.00, S = 32.1, O = 16.0)

a) Calculate the empirical formula of sulfamic acid.

(3 marks)

b) The molar mass of sulfamic acid is 97 g mol-1. Use this information to find the molecular
formula of sulfamic acid.
(2 marks)

QUESTION 5

Calcium, Ca undergoes combustion with 0.5 L oxygen gas in a closed container at RTP as
shown in the chemical equation below.

2Ca (s) + O2 (g) → 2CaO (s)

Calculate the mass of excess reactant left in gram, given that 2.32 g of Ca was combusted.

(Relative Atomic Mass, g mol-1: Ca = 40.1, O = 16.0)
