MP GEOGRAPHY

• before 1 nov. 2000, there were 9 physical regions of MP. Now, there are 7. 2 regions-

Mahanadi Basin and Dandyakarnya area.


• The whole of MP is situated on southern plateau
• According to geography, MP is northern part of inidan penninsula.
• Broadly, MP is divided into 3 parts.

Central Highland
• 2/3rd of MP is in Central Highland
• Central highland covers yamuna valley in North, Narmada -Son valley in South, Aravalli
hills in west and Chota Nagpur Plateau in east.
• Highest peak of central highland- Sadbhavna / Bhander Hill/ goodwill. (752 m). it is in
Sangrampur, Damoh.
• All the rivers flowing north of Narmada are tributaries of Ganga.that is why Central
highland is also called Ganga river basin.
• It is divided in to 5 parts.

1. Cetral India Plateau


• River- Chambal river
• it grows crops from which oil is seperated. Sarso is produced maximum here. That is why
also called “Sarso ki handi”
• it’s average rainfall is 75 cm. Bhind has lowest rainfall of central india rainfall. Balaghat
has highest rainfall
• Average height- 500m and tilts towards north east.
• Chambal Valley’s depth is almost 300 m.
• Due to Chambal river, Morena District has highest gally erosion making is India’s largest
ravines. (Seeda and Ranjat policy by MP govt.)
• Sahariya Tribe lives here in Shoepur and Guna District. Its sangrahlaya is in Sheopur.

2. Malwa Plateau
• it is MP’s largest plateau
• it is made of Besalt rocks and Volcanic rocks which makes black soil and brown soil
• Avg rainfall- 75 – 125 cm
• it has 2 drainage system- Yamina Drainage Systema (Chambal, Sindh, Ken, Betwa) and
Arab Sagar Drainage System (Mahi, Narmada and Tapti)
• it is also called Nadiyon ka Mayka.
• Soyabean is crop which is maximum produced.
• Fa-hein called – Malwa’s jalwayu best jalwayu of world.
• Languages- Malwi, Bhili, Nimadi
• Tropic of Cancer crosses 9 districts of Malwa Plateau- ratlam, Agarmalwa, Rajgarh,
Sehore, Bhopal, Vidisha, Raisen and Sagar.
• Mahi river cuts tropic of cancer twice.
• Malwa plateau is between aravallis and vindhya mountains.
• Vindhyachal mountains divides the narmada and ganga river basins.
• 19 districts come under Malwa plateau.- mandsaur, ratlam, Jhabua, Dhar, Alirajpur, Ujjain,
Dewas, Agar- Malwa, Shajapur, Rajgar, Sehore, Bhopal, Vidisha, Raisen, Guna,
Ashoknagar, Sagar and Neemuch.
• Highest Peak- Sigaar Peak, Indore (881m) 2nd highest peak- Janapav Peak, Indore(854)
• Janapav peak- it is in Mhow. It is birthplace of Parshuram. Chambal river and Gambhir
river (Yashwant sagar jheel is on it) starts from here. World’s 1st clock temple is to be
made here.
• Unnn, Khargaaon is jain teerth sthal in MP (it is called Khajuraho of Nimad)
• Mother of Khajuraho- Fort of Ajaygarh

3. Bundelkhand Plateau
• it is 23, 737 sq Km.
• It is found in north middle part of MP
• Districts like- Bhind, Datia, Shivpuri, Panna, Chhattarpur, Tikamgarh, Niwari, and some
districts of UP too come here.
• Highest peak- Siddhbaba peak (1172 m)
• Soil- Black and red soil
• famous for Daimond Production.

4. Rewa panna Plateau


• it is around Vindhya Mountains. So called Vindhyachal Scarplands.
• It includes Panna, Damoh, Sagar, Rewa and satna districts of MP
• Avg height- 350-400 m
• in Bhander plateau, there is a 29km long and 13 km wide dome called Dome of Jabera.
• Highest peak- Sadbhavna peak (752m)/Goodwill peak/Kalumaar Shikhar
• river- Tons, Beehad, Aud, Mahana, Son, Ken
• waterfalls- Chachai, Kewti, bahuti, Piyawan are present in this plateau
• Kaimur Mountains divide Yamuna and Son River besin and Bhander Mountain ranges
divide Ganga and Narmada Basin.

5. Narmada Son Plateau


• it is most deep place in MP
• it includes- Annupur, Mandla,Jabalpur, Dindori, katni, Khargaon, Dhar, Badwani, Sehore,
Hoshangabad, Narshingpur, Raisen, Sidhi, Khandwa, badwani, Alirajpur
• Avg. Hieght- 300m
• Avg. Rainfall- 70-140 cm
• Soil- Black Soil
• it is called- rajya ji Ann Peti
• Tribes- Gond, Korku, Baiga Tribe
• it is situated in between Vindhyachal and Satpura Mountain ranges.
• It is a riftvalley.

Satpura Maikal Range


• total area- 34000 sq km
• Satpura maikal range makes Sourthern Line for MP and It has narmada river in North and
river Tapti in south.
• Most south district of MP - Burhanpur
• it starts from amarkantak in East and Alirajpur in West
• Avg height- 600m
• maikal Ranges is birthplace of many rivers. So called Watershed of MP
• divided into 3 parts-
• Western Satpura Ranges
• it is called Rajpipla range and Badwani range
• it includes Alirajpur, Badwani, khargaon, khandwa and burhanpur
• it is situated between Asirgarh Mountain and Maidan of Nimad.
• Madhya Satpura Ranges
• it is called Gwalighat and Mahadev Mountain Range.
• It has highest peak – Dhoopgarh (1350m) in Mahadev Range. It is largest peak of MP
• its old name is Harvatskot.
• Hill station – Pachmari(highest rainfall- 199 cm) it is also called Summer capital and
queen of Satpur. (dist with highest rainfall balaghat)
• Kalibheet Mountains is birthplace of Tawa River
• MP’s 1st tourist capital- shivpuri
• it includes- Betul, Harda, Hoshangabad, Sivni, Chhindwara, Balaghat.
• Tribes- Gond, Koku, Baiga, Bhariya
• Eastern Maikal Ranges
• Maikal range is part of Narmada basin.
• Originally, Tanda River used join narmada river but now it joins Bainganaga River in south.
• 2nd highest peak of satpura range- Amarkantak peak (1064 m)

Baghelkhand Plateau
• northeast of MP
• avg height- 1200-1500 m
• soil- black-red soil.
• River – son, Rihand, Gopad
• MP’s smallest plateau
• it includes- Sahdol, Sidhi, Singroli, Annupur, Katni, Umaria0
• tribe- Baiga, Kol, Urav, Korba
• largest coal area- Sohagpur Coal Area which is produced by South east Coal feild Ltd.
• 2nd – Singroli coal area. It is world’s 2nd widest coal field whch is 136 m
• MP is 4th in production and 5th in storage.
