Homework 1 Ohm’s Law

1. A circuit is made of 0.4 ohm wire, a 150 ohm bulb and a 120 ohm rheostat connected in series.
Determine the total resistance of the circuit.
2. A 100 W, 250 V lamp is connected in series with a 100 W, 200 V lamp across 250 V supply
mains. Calculate (a) the current drawn from the supply mains and (b) voltage across each lamp.
Assume lamp résistance constant.
3. The equivalent resistance of four resistors joined in parallel is 30 ohms. The current flowing
through them are 4, 2, 4/3 and 2/3 amperes. Determine the value of each resistor.
4. If a resistor is to dissipate energy at the rate of 250 W, find the resistance for terminal voltage
of 100 V.
5. A resistor of value 1.6 ohms is connected in series with two resistors of value 4 ohms and 6
ohms which are connected in parallel. Find the total resistance of the series-parallel
combination.
6. Two resistances of 4 ohms and 6 ohms in parallel are in series with another resistor of 12 ohms.
If the current flowing in the 12 ohm resistor is 2 A, determine (a) the current flowing through
4 ohms and 6 ohms resistors (b) voltage across the whole circuit and (c) power drawn from the
supply.
7. A circuit consisting of three resistances 12 ohms, 18 ohms and 36 ohms, respectively. The
whole circuit is supplied at 60 V and it is found that the power dissipated in 12 ohm resistance
is 36 W. Determine the value of fourth resistance and the total power dissipated in the group.
8. A voltage of 200 V is applied to a rheostat of resistance 500 ohms. Find the resistance between
two tapping points connected to a circuit needing 1 A at 25 V.
