COPY THE QUESTIONS & ANSWER #s 4b, 5b, 5e, 6(c, e), 7b

1. DEFINE THE FOLLOWING TERMS:

a) Ionic bond between oppositely charged ions in a chemical compound.
—ionic bond, also called electrovalent bond, type of linkage formed from the electrostatic attraction

b) Covalent bond —the interatomic linkage that results from the sharing of an electron pair between two atoms. The binding
arises from the electrostatic attraction of their nuclei for the same electrons.
c) Dipole moment —the mathematical product of the separation of the ends of a dipole and the magnitude of the charges.

d) Polar bonds unequally.

—A type of covalent bond between two atoms in which electrons are shared

—Bond angle is defined as the angle between the two bonds i.e. angle between two orbitals containing
e) Bond angle bonding electron pairs around the central atom in a complex molecule or ion.
f) Bond strength much energy is required to break the bond between the two atoms.
—A bond's strength describes how strongly each atom is joined to another atom, and therefore how

g) VSEPR geometry based on the number of valence shell electron bond pairs among the atoms in a molecule
—The valence shell electron pair repulsion (VSEPR) theory is a model used to predict 3-D molecular

or ion.
