When I was younger, I always thought my dad was the most difficult person to buy gift for at Christmas.
But in fact, Jackie, you say that women are more difficult to buy for. Difficult. But they do get presents
that aren't that welcomed. So, for this week's podcast and English.com, we're looking at what presents are
suitable for women. What about you, Richard? What do you think the special lady in someone's life
should get? You're talking about you here. No, 1s in general. In general. Okay. Well, in general, I think
perfume is a good bet, isn't it? Yeah. Years ago, before I met you, I was given some perfume which I
really hated, but I felt obliged to wear it because I knew it was expensive. But I think you should only
buy fragrance if that has been specifically asked for. All right. Okay, then. So stay away from the
perfume counter, then. What about flowers? They must be a sure thing, surely. Yeah. You know, I love
receiving flowers, but for Christmas, really, I think he calls for something a bit more longer lasting. Yes.
And Christmas is cold, not good time for flowers. Yeah. Do you know, I'd put flowers in the same
category as chocolates, especially if they have to be shared. That's a good point. What about clothes,
then? I know you like to choose your own clothes, but surely lots of women would appreciate something
nice to wear. Yeah. If you think about it, Richard, there are a number of problems. If you buy something
too small, then she might think it's a suggestion to lose weight 1s is too big, she might be offended. You
think I'll fit into this, do you? So I think there's a style issue as well. I mean, having to wear something
she just doesn't like. So, running out of things here. I do remember a friend's dad buying his wife a
vacuum cleaner. Oh, no. Now there's more to it than that, because my friend and his brothers and sisters
had to stand in front of it, and then on Christmas morning, on queue, they had to reveal the vacuum
cleaner and shout, Merry Christmas. She was not very happy. I'm not surprised, Richard. I would
definitely say any household appliance is a no no. 2s Unless she asks for a really expensive food
processor. All right. Okay. Is that a hint? Is it, Jackie? 2s I suppose that a season ticket for a football club,
then, wouldn't be appreciated. Or a ticket to see the FA Cup final, perhaps? Or a new large flat screen
TV, perhaps. Richard, those are all presents for you. No. 2s Well, it sounds like an absolute minefield,
Jackie. So what do you suggest? Well, I think it is difficult, but I think you should listen out for
comments made during the year. So if she says, oh, that new person, that's really nice, I'd love to have
that. Or you see a coat or a jacket or something in a shop that she said, wow, I wish I could afford that.
Then buy that. And you've already given me a hi in the last few minutes as well.
