C. Presentation of the Lesson

Our lesson for today is all about Lines as one of the important elements in the
creation of meaning using any visual medium.

The Visual Element of Line is the foundation of all drawing. It is the first and most
versatile of the visual elements. Line in an artwork can be used in many different
ways. It can be used to suggest shape, pattern, form, structure, growth, depth,
distance, rhythm, movement and a range of emotions.

Lines
- A line can be described as the path of a point moving through space. In an
artwork, there are many types of line.
- We can look for the direction of the line, the feeling of the line, the quality of
the line, and how the lines move our eyes through artworks.
- A line is made up of an endless number of points/dots.
- Basic building block of an arts
Class, do you think lines can give emotions to its viewers?

Yes, Very Good. It has the capacity to evoke thoughts and emotions through its
Visual elements.

There are different ways to described Lines:

Active-passive Flowing-light
Thick-thin Broken-continuous
Implied-actual Contour-outline
Zig-zag-direct Bold-delicate
Straight-curved Long-short
Geometric-organic Precise-irregular
Vertical-horizontal

Now class, let’s talk about the Kinds of Lines.

We have straight lines and curved lines, anyone from the class who can give me
an example of straight lines?

Students answer may vary.

We have a psychological response to different types of lines:

 Curved lines suggest comfort and ease

 Horizontal lines suggest distance and calm

 Vertical lines suggest height and strength
 Jagged lines suggest turmoil and anxiety
The way we draw a line can convey different expressive qualities:
 Freehand lines can express the personal energy and mood of the artist
 Mechanical lines can express a rigid control
 Continuous lines can lead the eye in certain directions
 Broken lines can express the ephemeral or the insubstantial
 Thick lines can express strength
 Thin lines can express delicacy
D. Application
For you to be able to master the many sorts of lines, you must practice drawing
them.

Each box is labeled with a different sort of line; draw the different types of lines
requested for each box and be creative. See artwork sample for guidance.

E. Generalization
Okay class, if we are going to draw an artwork and brought their emotions, what
are the effective ways to use lines?
Before putting down a line, think about what your artwork is all about and choose
accordingly!
If creating an energetic work of art, try using curved lines with varying width and
texture!
When working on a peaceful work, try the organization function and figure out big
shapes, then use curved waves and minimalism.
If working on a piece trying to convey anxiety, try cross-hatching, zig-zags and
diagonal lines.

F. Evaluation
To convey a variety of feelings through a piece of art, let's experiment with
drawing different types of lines.

Direction: Make at least one piece of artwork using each type of line. For
guidelines, see the rubric.

See sample artwork below.
