Prior Knowledge

After identifying the different personal protective equipment (PPE)

and understanding the occupational health and safety (OHS) in
performing agronomic crop work, it is also very important to follow
instructions and directions from supervisors based on the requirements
and workplace procedure.

Presentation
The common agronomic crop work is composed of complex activities.
These activities undergo series of steps which are taught by the supervisors /
teachers. Hence, a sound working environment should have a good leader and a
good follower to achieve a productive workplace.

Lesson one (1) is all about "following and clarifying instructions and
2
directions based on supervisor’s requirements and workplace procedures”.

Generalization / Synthesis
Agronomic crop production works involve series of activities. These
activities must be carried out properly in order to reduce risk and sacrificing output
quality. Following instructions is an important ability to be practiced in everyday
life. Directions tell someone on how to do something or in which order something
is to be done. It is important to read all of the directions before beginning a certain
job. When you carefully follow a given instructions / directions, you don’t go wrong.
Therefore, it is important to always follow directions for proper work
implementation and avoidance of getting into trouble. A disregarded instruction or
a step missed out can lead to loss of efficiency, compromise quality of services,
customer experience, and even safety and hazard-related consequences. The
ability to follow instructions is a skill that and can be learned and developed by
everyone.

instructions on how to perform the task with minimum risk to people,
9
equipment, materials, environment, and processes.

Presentation
Farm workers are exposed to numerous safety, health, environmental,
biological, and respiratory hazards. Therefore, health and safety awareness are
needed. This lesson will discuss and emphasize cropping work in a safe and
environmentally responsible manner according to guidelines.

4. Neatness 10 %
Total 100 %

Concept Development

Always remember this simple formula when you go out to the farm.

Good Working Equipment + Capable and attentive Operators = Safety

Agricultural system in the Philippines is not sustainable. Cultivation is

poorly done with poor technological innovations. Many agricultural systems
practice conventional farming, an extreme case is the slash and burn agriculture
or “Kaingin”, which continue to threaten the forest areas of the country. On the
other hand, farm tools play a vital role in making the task possible. Tools make
work easier and faster. But even if you have sophisticated tools and implements,
if you do not know how to use it, it would be useless. Therefore, one must have
good working knowledge of their tools, implements and equipment before using
them.

10
Hand Tools

These tools are usually light and are used in performing small farm
activities without the help of animals or machines. Below are some of the
examples:

1. Bolo
It is a cutting tool used for cutting of
weeds particularly tall shrubs and grasses.

2. Shovel
It is a tool used for removing trash,
digging loose soil, moving soil from one place
to another, and for mixing soil media and
fertilizers.

3. Spading Fork
It is a tool used for breaking up and
turning soil in the garden and in harvesting
root crops.

4. Pick Mattock
It is a tool used for breaking hard topsoil,
digging canals, and for digging up stones
and tree stumps.

Farm Implements

They are usually made of metal, pulled by working animals or mounted

to machineries such as hand tractor and tractor in the preparation of large tracts of
land. Examples of farm implements:

mounted.
4. Dress appropriately.
5. Ensure you have well rested.
6. Avoid alcohol.
7. Adjust equipment accordingly.
8. Keep children and animals away from working areas.
9. Read about land preparation equipment safety.

Farm Safety Precautions during Emergencies

1. Evaluate the potential emergency that might occur in the working area such
as fire, flood, typhoon, machinery entrapment, electrical shock, snake / spider
bite, chemical exposure, farm injuries, farm illness, and farm accidents.
2. Be ready with emergency facilities appropriate for the sorts of emergencies
that might happen on the farm like deluge showers, eye washes, firefighting
equipment and first aid kits.
3. In case of spills, make sure that the correct equipment to be used is available.
4. Orient all the people working in the farm, visitors and others regarding on
safety to minimize risk in case accident happens. Let them understand the
13
emergency procedures and their responsibilities.
5. Train everyone working in the farm with emergency response procedures.
6. Place fire alarms on visible areas as well as fire extinguishers and first aid kits.
7. Post hotlines to contact for emergency services.

will likely benefit from accidents, which results in less occupational health costs,
better employee retention and satisfaction, and less employee downtime and
retraining time.

This lesson discusses tips on how to be safe in the workplace since a

Techniques in Storing Farm Chemicals

As a responsible individual farmer, one should be acquainted on the

chemicals he is handling. Manufacturers and suppliers have important role to
play. Chemical substance presents different types of risks to people’s health and
safety as well as in the environment. For this reason, environmental laws are
created to ensure that the chemicals are used effectively to minimize damages.

Disposal of Farm Chemical Containers

Dispose empty farm chemical containers and unwanted chemicals.

Before disposal, subject them to triple rinse (wash three times) for safety.

Tips in Cleaning Hygienic Facilities

1. Pick up trash from the floor and place them to trash can.
2. Clean the toilet using detergent.

disposable towel.

The Philippine Environmental Laws

1. Presidential Decree (PD) 1152 - is the Philippine Environmental Code. It took

effect in 1977, which provides a basis for an integrated waste management
regulation starting from waste source to methods of disposal. This also
includes municipal waste like solid and liquid.

3. PD 984 (Pollution Control Law)

Concept Development

Why do people find it hard to finish a task? For example, in the farm,
plants grow and develop rapidly during rainy season that need immediate
attention or else you will fail to supply the needed requirement for their growth
and development or after harvesting, produce quality deteriorate easily. Because
of these reasons, workers are required to submit a daily accomplishment report
to their team leader for farm owner and / or supervisor to monitor unfinished task
and plan ahead on what and how to do next.

According to research conducted by Joseph Ferrari, professor of

psychology at DePaul University and author of the book Still Procrastinating: The
No Regrets Guide to Getting It Done as cited by Jane Paul, writer of article “Why
You Can Never Finish Anything and How to Finally Change It”, the following
items below are reasons why people find difficult to finish a task:

1. afraid not to impress others

2. always living in their comfort zone; afraid to set high goals.
3. not realizing to put an end to the task

Other Reasons:
1. Lack of Motivation - They do not find the required duties interesting.
2. Poor Management - when the employees do not receive the direction
necessary to finish the required duties.
3. Environmental Distraction - natural calamities
4. Multi-tasking - too many tasks to attend to.

Solutions:
1. Define the problem.
2. Stop thinking over the negatives. Be positive.
3. Perfectionism is not an excuse.
4. Working under pressure doesn’t actually produce best results.
5. Divide the problem into smaller pieces.
