TOPIC 1.1: IDENTIFY DIFFERENT KINDS OF
TECHNICAL DRAWINGS

BRIEF INTRODUCTION:

To create a product or to build an infrastructure, planning is a must. One of the

essential parts of planning is to visualize the final output for it. To possibly visualize
the final output for the plan one must draw it, and this drawing is what we call as
the technical drawing. Technical drawing guide us to visualize all the things that we
want to see in the final output of the specific project.

What is Technical Drawing?

Technical drawing is also known as engineering drawings. It provides technical
information of the construction of a product such as the dimensions and its specifications.
It is technically accepted as legal document that can be used for regulatory approvals of a
specific product.
Technical drawing used standardized symbols, or graphical representations that are
used and understood by the technical personnel speaking different languages and
belonging to different countries and cultures. It uses universal language that makes it
possible to easily convey ideas, that will later put into life. It is usually prepared using
paper and pencil or with the aid of computer.
Examples of technical drawing in different fields and the standardized symbols used on it:

Using of standardized symbols in technical drawing for different field make it
relatively simple to look at and interpret the plan shown from it, so it will be easier now to
create or produce what is being shown from the technical drawing.

Drawing Instruments for Technical Drawing:

In creating technical drawing, one must use drawing instruments. Drawing
instruments are used to create an accurate and presentable technical drawing.
These are the commonly used drawing materials for technical drawing specifically
for electronic drafting:

Drawing Instrument Description Drawing Instrument Picture

and Function
1. Drawing board. A smooth board
usually rectangular in shape
provided with perfectly straight
edge which is used as working
edge on which the T- square is
moved while making drawings.

2. T-square. It consists of two parts
namely the stock and the blade,
these are joined at right angles to
each other by means of screws.
The stock is made to slide along
the working edge and the blade
moves on the drawing board. The
working edge of a T-square is
used to draw parallel lines,

3. Triangles. These are generally
made from plastic material.
There are two types of triangles,
one has 45 degrees and the other
one is 30-60 degrees. These are
used to draw accurate parallel
lines, horizontal lines, vertical
lines, diagonal lines and other
angled lines. These are used to

shape and it is made of plastic. It
is used to mark or measure
angles between 0 and 180o.
There is also protractor with
circular shape and this is

TOPIC 1.2: INTERPRET TECHNICAL DRAWINGS

BRIEF INTRODUCTION:

All developed electronics product came from a plan. A plan which can be consider
just like a blueprint that guides and provide detailed information for the construction
of a specific infrastructure, and for electronic products we call it as electronic
diagram. To possibly create and informative and helpful electronic diagram for
electronic products, one must have knowledge and skills for technical drawing and in
this module, you will be able to learn it.

One of the types of technical drawing is electronic drafting. Electronic drafting is the
process of illustrating various kinds of circuit and wring systems. Electronic drafting
should illustrate a reliable and easy to understand detailed information of the product, so
as to say it requires high quality work.

To produce a quality drawing of a product, specifically for electronic field one must
follow the Electronic Drafting Standards. Electronic Drafting Standards is the process of
illustrating various kinds of circuits and wiring systems.

There are common graphical languages for circuits and wiring systems and these
are the block, schematic, wiring and pictorial diagrams. These electronic diagrams are
used to show the detailed information or specifications of a specific electronic circuit and
it is used as a reference in designing, modifying and troubleshooting a circuit.

Four Kinds of Electronic Diagrams

1. Pictorial diagram – in this diagram it represents the image of the actual components
and wiring connections in the circuit. It also represents the exact shape of the
component in proportion to the actual component but not the exact size of it.
13
Fig. 1: Example of Pictorial Diagram
Reference: https://www.cantwaitproductions.com/honeywell-table-fan-diagram.html

2. Block Diagram – in this diagram it represents the components, group of components

in the circuit using block of squares, or rectangles connected by lines to show the
connection within the blocks.

Fig. 2: Example of Block Diagram

Reference: https://www.slideshare.net/KhairiAli1/ceiling-fan-74762827

3. Wiring diagram – in this diagram it represents the physical wiring connection of each
component in easy to follow manner, for it to easily trace out the wiring connection
in the circuit. Components in this circuit diagram are identified by name or are
represented by means of pictorial illustrations that do not follow any well- defined
standard form.

Fig. 3: Example of Wiring Diagram

Reference: https://www.fancollectors.org/info/mccomas/GE_BMY_Swndr_Cap.jpg

14
4. Schematic diagram – in this diagram it represents the connection of the components
in the circuit using electronic symbols with reference designation to distinguish it
from other similar symbols. Components in this diagram does not represent its
physical size, shape, and chassis location within the circuit.

Fig. 4: Example of Schematic Diagram

Guidelines in Drawing Diagrams

Below are the are recommended practices to be used to create a simple easy to read layout
of electronic diagrams.

1. The position of a symbol on a diagram does not affect its meaning.

2. The weight of a line used in drawing does not affect its meaning. In some cases a
heavier line may be used to emphasize a particular symbol.
3. A given symbol may be drawn in any size that is suitable for use in any particular
symbol.
4. If necessary for contrast, some symbols may be drawn smaller or larger than the
other symbols on a diagram.
5. In general, a connecting line should be brought to a symbol either vertically or
horizontally, but a connecting line brought to a symbol at an angle has no particular
significance unless noted otherwise.
6. The arrowhead symbol may be open (→) or closed (→) unless otherwise.
7. The standard symbol for a terminal ( 0 ) may be added to any symbol but when this
is done, the terminal symbol should not be considered a part of the symbol itself.
Reference Designations
Reference designation is the combinations of letters and numbers which identify
the components. This is use when more than one symbol of a specific type of component
appears on a diagram.
The symbols used to represent various components on a circuit diagram are most
often accompanied by a combination of letters that identify the components but are not
themselves a part of the symbol.
15
Reference Designations of Electronic Components
Electronic Class Designation
Components Letter(s)
Capacitor C
Diode D
Resistor R
Switch S or SW
Transformer T
Transistor Q or TR

Fig. 5: Example of Recommended Methods of Indicating Reference Designations and

Component Values

Numerical Values of Electronic Components

When details of the type, rating; or value of a particular component are to be given
on a diagram, this information is placed adjacent to the symbol or is given by means of
notes accompanying the diagram. For example, resistance and capacitance values are
indicated as shown in Fig. 5.

A resistance value of 1,000 ohms or more is most often expressed in terms of Kilohm
(K) or Megaohm (M) units. Thus a resistance of 4,700 ohms is written as 4.7K ohms, while
a resistance of 2,700,000 ohms may be written as 2.7M ohms. The comma used when
writing a 4-digit number such as 4,700 is not used when such a number is given on a
diagram.

Capacitance values of 1 through 9,999 picofarads are usually expressed in picofarad

(pF) units. Capacitance values greater than 10,000 picofarads should be expressed in
microfarad (µF) units.

Layout of Electronic Diagram

The layout or form of a diagram should show the main features prominently. The
parts of a diagram should be carefully spaced to provide an even balance between blank

16
spaces and lines. Enough blank space should be left in the areas near symbols to avoid
crowding any necessary notes or reference information.

ACTIVITY
Direction: Identify the kinds of electronic diagram being shown from the pictures.

2. _________________________________ 4. _______________________________

17
REMEMBER!

Electronic diagram has four kinds and those are pictorial diagram, block diagram,
wiring diagram and schematic diagram. In drawing electronic diagram, one must follow
the recommended guidelines in order to create a simple and informative diagram for
the people who will look at it or read it.
