PRESS NOTE
Subject: Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production and Use-based
Index (Base 1993-94=100) for the month of March, 2011.

The Quick Estimates (QE) of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 199394 for the month of March 2011 have been released by the Central Statistics Office
of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. The General Index
stands at 401.2, which is 7.3% higher as compared to the level in the month of
March 2010. The cumulative growth for the period April- March, 2010-11 stands at
7.8% over the corresponding period of the previous year.
2. The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and
Electricity sectors for the month of March 2011 stand at 236.1, 438.5, and
280.2 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of 0.2%, 7.9% and
7.2% as compared to March 2010. The cumulative growth during AprilMarch, 2010-11 over the corresponding period of 2009-10 in these three
sectors have been 5.9%, 8.1% and 5.6% respectively, which moved the overall
growth in the General Index to 7.8%.
3. In terms of industries, thirteen (13) out of the seventeen (17) industry groups
(as per 2-digit NIC-1987) have shown positive growth during the month of
March 2011 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. The
industry groups Leather and Leather & Fur Products have shown the highest
growth of 28.6%, followed by 25.6% in Other Manufacturing Industries and
18.4% in Food Products. On the other hand, the industry groups Wood and
Wood Products; Furniture and Fixtures have shown a negative growth of
66.4% followed by 7.9% in Textile Products (including Wearing Apparel).
4. As per Use-based classification, the Sectoral growth rates in March 2011 over
March 2010 are 4.3% in Basic goods, 12.9% in Capital goods and 5.4% in
Intermediate goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have
recorded growth of 12.3% and 5.7% respectively, with the overall growth in
Consumer goods being 7.7%.

5. Some of the important items of Capital goods contributing to the high growth
in this category are Turbines (steam/hydro) (67.6%), Process control
instruments (42.9%), Boilers (31.5%) and Complete tractors (30.2%).
Alarm time pieces (59.7%), Two wheeler tyres (55.5%) and Passenger
cars (33.6%) are some of the important items contributing towards the high
growth of Consumer durable goods.
6. The other important items which are showing highly positive growth during the
month are : Monocrotophos (110.9%), Benzene (100.0%), Writing
instruments (63.6%), Sulpha drugs (49.0%), Sugar (47.1%), Methanol
(46.2%), Stainless/ alloy steel (43.8%) and Ampicillin (37.2%) etc.
7. Along with the Quick Estimates of IIP for March 2011, the indices for
February 2011 have undergone the first revision and those for December 2010
have undergone the second (final) revision in the light of the updated data
received from the source agencies. (It may be noted that revised indices (first
revision) in respect of January 2011 have already been released along with the
Quick estimate for the month of February 2011).
8. Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at
Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC)-1987 and by
Use-based classification for the month of March 2011, along with the growth
rates over the corresponding month of previous year, including the cumulative
indices and growth rates, are enclosed.
9. The Committee of Secretaries (COS) in its meeting held on 10th May, 2011
approved the release of the new series of Index of Industrial Production (IIP)
with 2004-05 as its base. The release of IIP with 2004-05 base will start from
the month of June, 2011, which will be the Quick Estimate of IIP for the month
of April, 2011. The other details of the new series along with time series
indices will also be released with the QE for the month of April, 2011.
Note: Release of the index for April 2011 will be at 11.00 hours on the Friday,
10 June 2011.
