Design Update Note

Alpha Lubricator System

New ALCU1 for K/L/SMC/MC-C and K/LMC-S engines

The Alpha Lubricator System has been in production for more than 7 years. It is well known that
the service life of an electronic product depends on the general availability of the electronic
components used in the product. From time to time, makers discontinue components that are
considered to be obsolete. In some situations components can be easily substituted with other
components. However, it is often necessary to redesign the electronic boards, in particular when it
comes to the more vital components, if the components available are not directly interchangeable.

This is the case for the CPU used on the MCU module, because the supplier stopped the
production of the specified CPU several years ago. However, in close cooperation with our
approved electronic manufacturers, we secured the production of this MCU by increasing their
stock of this important component. At the same time, we started developing a new MCU hardware
platform, based on a new CPU type, and updating the BCU and the SBU.

We are therefore pleased to announce that the present execution of the Alpha Lubricator
electronics, designated ALCU (Alpha Lubricator Control Unit), has now been updated. The name
of the updated control unit is ALCU1.

ALCU1 is conceptually equal to ALCU, and still includes one MCU, one BCU, one SBU and one
HMI. Changes have been made to the MCU, BCU and the SBU. The HMI remains unchanged,
and the basic functionality of the overall system is also unchanged.

Please note that the introduction of ALCU1, and thus the new versions of MCU, SBU and BCU, is
solely due to production related reasons (i.e. obsolete components). This means that stocks of
earlier versions of MCU, SBU and BCU can still be used (i.e. delivered and installed) as long as
they are available.

The new MCU hardware requires update of the software. The software for the new MCU has been
designated SW 2.5.

The following new features are available in the MCU SW 2.5

1) Feed rate adjustment directly in ACC feed rate factor [g/kWh x S%] and Sulphur % to ease
adjustment according to Alpha ACC and latest cylinder oil dosage guidelines.
2) Index calibration at Idle, 25%, 50% 75% and 100% power (at shop test), to further improve
dosage accuracy.
3) Fuel quality factor adjustment on HMI panel to compensate for change in index value due
to fuel quality.
4) Dosage algorithm shift from engine Power to engine Rpm below 25 % load to comply with
our latest guidelines.

ALCU - ALCU1

The external electric connections from the ALCU1 remain unchanged. The internal cabling of the
ALCU1 is slightly changed compared to the ALCU.

Regarding the individual modules, we can inform you as follows:

1. The new updated versions of the SBU and BCU modules for ALCU1 are fully
interchangeable with the SBU and BCU modules of ALCU and the part numbers remain
unchanged (SBU: No. 3157168-7 and BCU: No. 1211636-9).
2. The new MCU for ALCU1 can replace the old MCU. This requires updating to the new
MCU software version 2.5, including a new version of the set-up (parameter) file. At the
moment, the parameter file has to be ordered and delivered from MAN Diesel, and
subsequently be loaded upon delivery and installation.
3. We are exploring a solution where our licensees, via the DieselPort extranet, can import
the necessary data for engines in service and download the finished set-up file for the new
MCU. We will keep you informed on this matter.
4. Part numbers have been changed as follows: Old MCU: No. 3157167-5 and new MCU:
No. 1881610-7.

Introduction of ALCU1

All new design specifications ordered after 1 December 2009 will include drawings and set-up file
for both the new ALCU1 as well as for the old ALCU, until all suppliers of ALCU have changed
their production to the ALCU1. Licensees must make sure that the right specification and set-up
file are forwarded to your supplier, depending on your supplier’s actual production.

We enclose an instruction for the new Menu Structure shown in the HMI panel. The new features
are shown in blue colour. Commissioning on test bed and on sea trial is unchanged.

Best regards
MAN Diesel
