GREAT COMMISSION

Scope:
“But you will receive power when the holy spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses
in Jerusalem, and all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:7-8).

If we discuss the great commission Jesus gave to the church. As per John chapter 17, he said
that as the father has sent him to the world, and he was now sending us. And it I our responsibility to
take the gospel to the whole world and make disciples of all nations. And this commission was given
by Jesus to his people before he left. The first is in Mathew 28: 18-20. And this scripture reveals two
things about our commission. First, Jesus had the authority to give it to us. Second, we are to make
disciples of all nations.

Nature:

If anyone in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold all things have
become new. Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ and has
given us the ministry of reconciliation.

Context:

“Remember the context of the Great Commission. Everyone was ready to go home after a good
Friday. That’s the point. Christ rose from the dead and surprised everyone. He changed the whole
narrative. He’s alive, ruling, reigning, and unstoppable.”1

Content:

All things teach them to obey all things.

Goal of Great Commission:

• A goal is an end of an objective that we strive to attain to make the disciples.

• This is mainly achieved by going, baptizing, teaching, and preaching.

The objective of missionary enterprise is:

a. Evangelism
b. Discipleship
c. Church planting

The church has several goals or objectives for the mission.

1. Evangelistic objectives: make Disciples to reaching the gospel.

2. Education objective: Teach them to the disciples.
3. Ecclesiastical objective: Planting and Growing churches by the disciples to planting
the churches. (Acts 14:21-23)
4. Philanthropic objective: Healing, feeding, caring, etc.

Making Disciples:

The mission is EXTENSION of the kingdom RULE. The New Testament speaks of
those without Christ as being “DEAD” … in transgressions and sins. “As for you, you were
dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of
this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who
are disobedient. (Ephesians 2: 1-3).” “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man,
and death through sin, and in this way, death came to all people because all sinned-” (Romans
5:12). The kingdom of God is extended when a person accepts the rule of God by repentance
and faith in Christ. For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable,
through the living and enduring word of God. (1Peter 1:23). This happens in all things and
through the church. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name
of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, (Mathew28:19). This was what Jesus
emphasized in his parting words to his followers just before his ascension into heaven.

If you want to part fulfill a Great Commission:

• You need to have resurrection and experience.

• You need to have Pentecostal experience.

Three Participles:

1. Going: “He said o them, “Go into all the world and preach and the gospel to all creation.
Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be
condemned.” (Mark 16:15-16).

Conclusion:

The Great commission spells out the central purpose of all beleivers. After
salvation, our lives belong to Jesus Christ who died to purchase our freedom from sin
and death. He redeemed us so we might become useful in his kingdom.
