PROBLEM AND IT’S SETTING

Introduction

According to Semilla and Soriano (2017), Korean Dramas refers to Korean

created in South Korea. It is widely popular and known worldwide. It is usually in

episodic type wherein the storylines are presented with specific episode. Korean

dramas are extremely popular worldwide, particularly due to the spread of the

Korean Wave, with streaming services that offer multiple language subtitles.

Many of these dramas have become popular throughout Asia, with growing

interest in other parts of the world. Over the years, the Korean wave has swept

throughout the Philippine media industry. Every day we can see a lot of Korean

dramas aired on television. Even in social media, its rapid spread made it even

more popular. Most common Korean dramas that we often see are all about

romantic dramas, sometimes with a twist of action and comedy. Moreover,

Korean dramas are no different from other local TV series. But what gives

Korean dramas more interesting to watch is that it only contains 16 to 20

episodes. Airing on television, many of the viewer’s got entertained on how the

story of each Korean drama gives them of what we so called “Kilig factor”.

According to Delos Reyes et.al (2017) based on the study they conducted,

Korean dramas have been touching the teenager’s personality through physical,
emotional and mental state. Some of the teens tend to sacrifice their food and

time just to watch Korean dramas they like. But there is also a positive

psychological effect to Filipino teenagers. The advantage is they become

friendlier, become more confident, becomes more open minded, learn how to

appreciate music, dance and people behavior.

As a result of being addicted to watching Korean dramas, it makes

individuals forget time because they feel challenged to spend every episode,

then the other effects of addiction to Korean drama will make a person's

activities less varied because they are only busy on Korean dramas including

holidays, individuals continue to think about Korean dramas all day, then as

many as 50% feel uneasy if they don't watch Korean dramas, don't focus on

studying and want to go home quickly to watch Korean dramas, as many as

40.90% of individuals repeat watching Korean dramas after a long time stopping,

and cause someone to become a private person because spend more time

watching Korean drama than hanging out with family, friends and the

surrounding environment (Oktadianti, Umari, & Jacob, 2018).

Individuals who are addicted to Korean drama will use the time that should

be used to sleep by watching Korean drama, this will make the rest and sleep

time delayed which can result in individuals experiencing poor sleep quality

(Adita et al., 2018).

REVIEW OF THE RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter shows the context and literature reviews both foreign and

local such as books, articles, write-ups, and other sources which will bring clarity

and a big help for the formation of this study.

What is K-drama?

한류(Hallyu ; Korean wave) is a word that refers to a Korean pop culture

including K-drama, K-pop, and K-food that are well liked by foreigners.

Particularly, K-drama became popular in the early 2000s in countries not limited

to Asia but also Middle East, Europe, and North and South America.

K-dramas are generally known for having high production value, intense

and often engrossing storylines, and quality acting that helps build an emotional

connection between the characters and the audience. They also tend to consist

of more PG-friendly fare than western TV shows (nudity and sex are practically

nonexistent, for example), rendering K-dramas more palatable for a wider range

of age groups and countries, especially those that are more socially

conservative. At the same time, the bold and skilful storytelling with which K-

dramas tackle societal issues, personal struggles, and universal themes such as

family, friendship, and love make for thoughtful content that resonates with

audiences across geographical borders. To put it plainly, K-dramas make us feel

less alone and often successfully tap into our shared human experiences and

emotions says Kim (2021).

According to Setianingtyas ( 2018), K in K-drama refers to Korean.

Respectively, J-drama refers to Japanese drama (or Dorama) and C-drama

refers to Chinese-language drama. K drama refers to television dramas produced

by South Korea. Starring South Korean actors/actresses, produced by South

Korean, using korean language and aired in South Korean TV stations. It is

watchable on TV and also via internet stream in respective TV stations’ website,

viki, drama fever, netflix and other VOD providers. Many of them are then also

broadcasted in other countries’ TV stations as well, boosting its popularity.

Korean dramas are popular worldwide, partially due to the spread of

Korean popular culture, and their widespread availability via streaming services

which often offer subtitles in multiple languages. K-dramas are generally known

for having high production value, intense and often engrossing storylines, and

quality acting that helps build an emotional connection between the characters

and the audience. (https://moviecultists.com/what-is-k-drama).

For the unacquainted, Korean dramas, K-dramas for short are South

Korean scripted TV shows. Sometimes they’re referred to as Korean soap

operas, but that description is misleading because K-dramas actually encompass

a wide range of genres, from sci-fi and romance to horror and period pieces and

everything in between. Most consist of a finite number of episodes (often

between 16 and 24, though some especially family-oriented and historical

dramas run for 50-plus) and are usually completed in a single season, with a few

notable exceptions (more on that later).

explained/).

K-dramas have also dramatically (no pun intended) boosted tourism to

South Korea, with a 2017 Korea Tourism Organization survey finding that roughly

half of foreign tourists in South Korea decided to visit the country after watching

Korean dramas and films. Filming locations of hit K-dramas have become

popular tourist destinations in South Korea, and beginning in the early 2000s,

scores of Asian women enamored with the strong, handsome, and romantic

Korean male leads they saw in K-dramas—have ventured to the country in hopes

of dating and marrying a Korean man. K-dramas have also fostered the growth of

South Korea’s booming medical industry as countless tourists visit the country

every year to undergo plastic surgery in an effort to look more like Korean actors

or actresses. (https://www.elle.com/culture/movies-tv/a37293494/korean-drama-

renaissance-explained/).

Temblor (2016), concluded that K-Drama is known for its fresh storylines

and scenic cinematography. It has captured good following among neighboring

countries and even among westerners. Its stories appeal to the masses,

especially the youth and middle-aged. The cast usually includes an "eye candy,"

giving viewers more reasons to enjoy the show by employing good-looking actors

whose looks alone are enough to sustain attention.

The "kilig" factor is always an important element. Hicap (2009),stated that

top Philippines TV stations GMA networks and ABS-CBN are leading the way in

importing Korean dramas in the country which have become hit in the 2000’s.

Abacan says “Filipinos love Korean novellas because they can relate to the

stories .Most of the time; the Korean dramas are quite escapist and moving.

ABS-CBN's Raymundo said Korean novelas offer Filipino audiences a change of

pace from local programming. "Korean novelas give viewers a different style of

storytelling from usual Filipino soap operas, or "teleseryes." Since Korean

dramas are aired only two hours a week, compared to the Filipino daily 30-

minute episodes, viewers can expect a faster pace.

It has influenced international fans to the extent that they have become

interested not only in consuming related merchandise, but also in learning the

Korean language, imitating authentic Korean fashion (including make-up,

clothing, and the use of plastic surgery), tasting its cuisine, and ultimately, in

visiting South Korea itself (Shim and Lee, as cited in Lee, 2012).

This widespread popularization of Korean television dramas, and Korean

culture in general, might be because of its transnationality and cultural hybridity,

referring to how it is a mixture of various cultures, and therefore building “social

fields that cross geographic, cultural, and political borders” (Basch, et al., as cited

in Jung, 2009).
Evolution of Korean Dramas

The South Korean TV networks began airing dramas regularly in the early

1960’s. At that time most dramas were made to educate the public and support

the military government. Moreover, TV Korean dramas began to become popular

form of family entertainment. However, with the boom of Korean dramas, the

military government began imposing tighter controls over the “poor taste” content

and required the networks to allocate more broadcasting time to news and

educational programmers. Later on, in the year 1980’s, the variety of Korean

dramas increased, the Korean tv networks began offering trending dramas,

focusing on the lives and love stories of the younger generation to attract young

viewers (Kalbi, 2016).

The Korean Wave or “Hallyu” refers to the “dramatic spread of Korean

pop[ular] cultureacross Asia...” with Korean television dramas generally

considered as its leading force (Shibata, 2013). The Korean Wave has noticeably

been growing bigger and stronger since its formation in the late 1990s when it

had crashed onto the shores of China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and other

Asian countries (Hayashi, as cited in Shibata, 2013.). In 2003, Hallyu has

reached the Philippines when GMA 7 aired Endless Love 1: Autumn in My Heart

which was the first Korean drama (also called Koreanovela) that gained the

attention of Filipino viewers and paved the way for the succeeding Koreanovelas

that were aired, such as Stairway to Heaven, Lovers in Paris, Full House, and

Jewel in the Palace (Igno & Cenidoza, 2016). By 2005, Korean dramas became
a part of the daily programming on prime time Philippine television (Channel

News Asia, as cited in Shibata, 2013).

Over the years, the Korean wave has swept throughout the Philippine

media industry. Every day we can see a lot of Korean dramas aired on television.

Even in social media, its rapid spread made it even more popular. Most common

Korean dramas that we often see are all about romantic dramas, sometimes with

a twist of action and comedy. Moreover, Korean dramas are no different from

other local TV series. But what gives Korean dramas more interesting to watch is

that it only contains 16 to 20 episodes. Airing on television, many of the viewer’s

got entertained on how the story of each Korean drama gives them of what we so

called “Kilig factor”.

ONG_SENIOR_HIGH_STUDENTS)

Over the years Korean dramas have evolved immensely. But we can all

agree that it has been for the better. The reach and impact they have today is so

much greater than back in the day ( Manse, 2017).

In a book entitled “K-drama: A new TV genre with Global Appeal24 (p.22-

24,2011)presented that, when one of the Korean dramas “Jewel in the palace ”had its

stunning success. Some of the countires in Asia that was hittedare Japan, China,

Hongkong, Taiwan, Malaysia and Philippines. Through this success, today, there is a

high demand of Korean soap operas/dramas even in countries where Korean television

networks haven’t been broadcast. By the day, encompassing everything from dramas

and movies to food and clothes. The urban youth today prefer everything in Korea.

According to Yuchen & Yi Ci (2015), the findings of their study concluded

that Korean dramas are exactly popular with the students in their school, but

watching Korean dramas doesn’t bring them negative effects, no matter on their

schoolwork or in their everyday lives.

According to Naidu (2015) based on the findings of his study, From the

collected data, the researchers are able to establish that audience between the

age groups of 21-30 formed the highest number of K-drama viewers. The female

audience seemed to take up to more number of K-drama viewing as compared to

the other sexes. Of the 100 participants who took the survey, 81% of them had

watched K-dramas, thereby proving K-dramas reach and popularity among its

audience. Many of the viewer’s was able to pick up to various habits depicted on

the shows in which by these changes their daily lives and behaviors. In his

research, the hypothesis f is the null hypothesis as there is no relationship

between the age and gender for K-drama viewership. There is no age barrier for

people to or not to watch Korean dramas.

According to Yap (2011), the role of students watching Korean Drama’s

Students are the key assets of a growing drama’s. The student’s performance

plays an important role in producing best quality dramas who will become great

leaders and labor for the country thus responsible for the country’s economic and

social development. Interest is an important factor of learning. On a general level,

many students respond better to watching Korean drama than to reading which

helps in keeping them interested and prevent them from getting easily distracted.
Students today watching Korean drama are a tool to learn educational that they

can use for their studies, that once seem difficult to teach and learn are now

more accessible and understandable to the availability of educational K-drama.

Negative effect of watching k-drama

As of today’s generation, Filipino teenagers are more engaged in watching

Korean dramas. It caught the teen’s attention by its theme, story, the characters

and even the soundtrack in which by these could have a great impact/effects on

the Filipino teenager’s lifestyle and behaviour. Lot of teenagers are being

addicted to it and with the continuous practice; they began to absorb the culture

of Korea. As a result, many among the Filipino teenagers nowadays tends to

sacrifice their time for sleep, foods, communication, family bonding and school

stuff just to watch Korean dramas. According to Delos Reyes et.al (2017) based

on the study they conducted, Korean dramas have been touching the teenagers’

personality through physical, emotional and mental state. Some of the teens tend

to sacrifice their food and time just to watch Korean dramas they like.

Individuals who are addicted to Korean drama will use the time that should

be used to sleep by watching Korean drama, this will make the rest and sleep

time delayed which can result in individuals experiencing poor sleep quality

(Adita et al., 2018).

According to Delos Reyes et.al (2017) based on the study they conducted,

Teenagers

The teenage years are also called adolescence. This is a time for growth

spurts and puberty changes (sexual maturation). A teen may grow several inches

in several months, followed by a time of very slow growth. Then they may have

another growth spurt. Puberty changes may happen slowly. Or several changes
may occur at the same time. It's important to remember that these changes will

happen differently for each teen. Some teens may have these signs of maturity

sooner or later than others. Each child goes through puberty at their own pace.

Adolescence, transitional phase of growth and development between childhood

and adulthood. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines an adolescent as

any person between ages 10 and 19. This age range falls within WHO’s

definition of young people, which refers to individuals between ages 10 and 24.In

many societies, however, adolescence is narrowly equated with puberty and the

cycle of physical changes culminating in reproductive maturity. In other societies

adolescence is understood in broader terms that encompass psychological,

social, and moral terrain as well as the strictly physical aspects of maturation. In

these societies the term adolescence typically refers to the period between ages

12 and 20 and is roughly equivalent to the word teens

adolescent-13-to-18-years-90-P02175).

The life of a teenager seems to change daily. One minute a teen seems

interested in a new sport, topic in school, or type of music, only to completely

shift gears the next. Constantly exposed to new ideas, social situations, and

people, teenagers work to develop their personalities and interests during this

time of great change. Before their teenage years, these adolescents focused on

school, play, and gaining approval from their parents. But now, those former

goals are replaced with a desire for independence, as teenagers work toward

becoming young adults. During adolescence, teenagers develop emotionally,

cognitively, and physically. These changes aren’t without challenges, but

thankfully, education professionals, family members, counselors, and

psychologists are available to help the teens navigate this difficult period

During adolescence, issues of emotional (if not physical) separation from

parents arise. While this sense of separation is a necessary step in the

establishment of personal values, the transition to self-sufficiency forces an array

of adjustments upon many adolescents. Furthermore, teenagers seldom have

clear roles of their own in society but instead occupy an ambiguous period

between childhood and adulthood. These issues most often define adolescence

in Western cultures, and the response to them partly determines the nature of an

individual’s adult years. Also during adolescence, the individual experiences an

upsurge of sexual feelings following the latent sexuality of childhood. It is during

adolescence that the individual learns to control and direct sexual urges. Some

specialists find that the difficulties of adolescence have been exaggerated and

that for many adolescents the process of maturation is largely peaceful and

untroubled. Other specialists consider adolescence to be an intense and often

stressful developmental period characterized by specific types of behaviour

What is social lifestyle?

Life is a notion of difficult definition. We can say that it is about the

existence, the activity of an organic being or the ability to be born, develop,

reproduce and die. Social, on the other hand, is what is linked to society: a

community of individuals that share a common culture or interests (Minor 2018).

These concepts allow us to get closer to the idea of social life, which is

usually defined by opposition to private life. In this sense, we can affirm that

social life encompasses the activities that take place in the public or community

sphere, while private life includes what is lived inside the home or within the

family. Another way of understanding social life is linking it to the actions that a

human being carries out in contact with other people. This reveals that all

individuals have, to a greater or lesser extent, a social life, since there is no

person who can live in absolute solitude and without interacting with the

environment. However, we cannot forget the existence of what is known as a

hermit. It is a person who makes the decision freely to live alone in a place that is

absolutely uninhabited, in order to carry out an existence completely dedicated to

what prayer or meditation, above all. That is to say, it comes to put aside

completely what is social life. It is important to establish that, as a general rule,

eremitism is related to religion. And it is the same in people who are Christian,

Buddhist, Sufi and even Hindu (Aitokhuehi et al., 2014).

Social life involves communication between the subject and his peers. The

relationship between people is governed by diverse codes and norms that

minimize the conflict and make possible that there is harmony in this social life. It

can be said that a person who usually attends parties and meetings often has an
intense social life. This tendency to participate in these events makes it interact

with numerous individuals, developing different kinds of relationships. The

extroverted, friendly and nice people are more easily able to develop their social

lives than those who are introverted, shy and laconic. In general, active social life

is associated with a full and healthy life. (Kim (2011).

There are people who, in a colloquial way, say that they do not have social

life because their day to day passes between what is work and home. In that

case, it is recommended that in order to enjoy what they should do, they should

follow advice such as these: You must be receptive to receive invitations to

certain acts and activities. It is relevant, in the same way, not to be afraid of the

rejection of other individuals. A great way to promote social life is to join reading

clubs, associations, dance classes, cooking workshops, hiking associations. In

this way, you will be in contact with other people and that will facilitate the

participation in plans, in forging friendships. Knowing how to listen and be

tolerant are fundamental characteristics that must be possessed in order to have

a social life. -To have a predisposition to meet new people and to enjoy other

experiences will also help in the aforementioned objective. (Toraman, 2015).

Understanding how to establish and maintain supportive connections in

any medium is an essential part of life. People who live alone especially benefit

from cultivating a strong network of social connections. People have the freedom

today to build their particular social cohort both online and offline; their social

circles may include family, friends, professional mentors, and other important

individuals in their lives. Online social ties can be a powerful source of social
support and joy, especially for people who are isolated for geographical or other

reasons. There is, however, no substitute for face-to-face interaction, and those

who spend time among friends and family report higher levels of well-being than

individuals with fewer ties "in real life."

METHODOLOGY

This chapter identifies, describes, and examines the general procedures

that were observed in the utilization of the study. This includes the research

design, the participants, sampling techniques, data collection procedures and the

processes and analysis.

Research Design

This study employed a quantitative research design in order to determine

the impact of watching k-dramas on the social lifestyle of the teenagers living in

the Purok 13 Malagante, Landan, Polomolok, South Cotabato.

Quantitative Research is used to quantify the problem by way of

generating numerical data or data that can be transformed into usable statistics.

It is used to quantify attitudes, opinions, behaviours, and other defined variables

and generalize results from a larger sample population. It uses measurable data

to formulate and uncover patterns in research.

This study uses descriptive research which is a type of quantitative

research. Descriptive research describes what is. It involves the description,

recording, analysis, and interpretation of the present nature, composition or

process of the phenomena. The focus is on prevailing conditions, or how a

person, group or thing behaves or functions in the present. It often involves some

type of comparison or contrast (Manuel and Medel p. 25). The process of

descriptive research goes beyond mere gathering and tabulation of data. It

involves the elements or interpretation of the meaning or significance of what is

described. Thus, description is often combined with comparison and contrast

involving measurements, classifications, interpretation, and evaluation (Sanchez,

p.83).

Purok 13 Malagante

Purok 13 Malagante is one of the fast growing purok of Barangay Landan.

Landan is a barangay in the municipality of Polomolok, in the province of South

Cotabato. Its population as determined by the 2020 Census was 6,829. This

represented 3.96% of the total population of Polomolok. The household

population of Landan in the 2015 Census was 5,967 broken down into 1,299

households or an average of 4.59 members per household. According to the

2015 Census, the age group with the highest population in Landan is 10 to 14,

with 810 individuals. Conversely, the age groups with the lowest population are in

the ranges 75 to 79, and 80 and over, with 33 individuals. Combining age groups

together, those aged 14 and below, consisting of the young dependent

population which include infants/babies, children and young

adolescents/teenagers, make up an aggregate of 37.29% (2,239). Those aged

15 up to 64, roughly, the economically active population and actual or potential

members of the work force, constitute a total of 59.63% (3,580). Finally, old

dependent population consisting of the senior citizens, those aged 65 and over,

total 3.08% (185) in all. The computed Age Dependency Ratios mean that

among the population of Landan, there are 63 youth dependents to every 100 of

the working age population; there are 5 aged/senior citizens to every 100 of the

working population; and overall, there are 68 dependents (young and old-age) to

every 100 of the working population. The median age of 21 indicates that half of

the entire population of Landan are aged less than 21 and the other half are over

the age of 21. The population of Landan grew from 3,825 in 1990 to 6,829 in

2020, an increase of 3,004 people over the course of 30 years. The latest census

figures in 2020 denote a positive growth rate of 2.75%, or an increase of 825

people, from the previous population of 6,004 in 2015.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers formulate questions about the topic or the study. Then,

we secured a letter with a purok chairman’s signature to ask permission to

conduct a survey to the teenagers of the purok about the said topic. After which,

the researchers conducted a survey wherein the respondents answered the

survey questionnaire which have undergone a process of validation and were

rated and checked and validated by the validators. All the data that has been

gathered by the researchers from the respondents has been analyzed and has

been given an interpretation.

Research Instrument

The researchers used checklist and survey questionnaire as a tool in

determining the impacts of watching k-dramas to the social lifestyle of the

respondents.

Checklist which is used to obtain information and to analyze where the

incidences and non-conformities happen. Help to check the causes of defects. In

this study, it is used in order to know the number of students who watches k-

drama according to their age, gender and tribe.

In this study, the researchers also uses survey questionnaire. It is a very

well-known and widely-used research technique for quickly and efficiently

gathering and analyzing data from a population under study.

To sum it up, the research instruments that were being used became the

way for the researchers to gather data that was very useful in the study.

Statistical Treatment

The statistical treatments that were being used in the study are the

following:

Weighted Mean in order to gather data in every item of the survey

questionnaire.
Z-test is a statistical test used to determine whether two population means

are different when the variances are known and the sample size is large.

The formula in computing Z-test is as follows:

√∑
1
SD= ¿ ¿ ¿x1) Z= X-µ
n

n-1 SD/√ n

where:

n= population size

X= mean of population

X1= sample population

σ =¿Standard Deviation of population
