SELF-EVALUATION: Answer the following questions below.

1. How did the opening of the Philippines to world commerce and trade affect the country
and its people?

Through the acceptance of the Philippines to world commerce and trade, it has
affected the country and its people in a lot of various ways. It has opened the
opportunity of the country for industrialization and economic prosperity to improve the
situation present on its community. They were able to export goods and services for big
income and so does the other country to the Philippines. The country was known by its
products, thus many international companies are coming over to help expand its
business and trade. It also somehow paved away for freedom against the Spanish
merchants because they began to lose their commercial supremacy in the Philippines.
However through the help of Spain by using our resources to sell to other countries, it
helped the country’s economy to rise. The Filipino people also were able to think of
ways for improvement and income through accessing the business league. Their
knowledge expanded for finance and consumer retails which help them gain more profit
and experience.
2. Define Imperialism in your own words.

Imperialism is known as the practice of spreading a certain country’s power,

supremacy, and legislative force through attaining political and economic control of
other people and territories. Example, British Empire is considered as one of the country
that holds strong imperialism to its colonized countries namely Canada, India, Middle
East, Caribbean Islands, Africa, and U.S Colonies. So as what you have seen from the
example, the British Empire did not just rule itself, it also governs the economic and
political state of the other countries mentioned by their power. There are 3 main forms
considered in imperialism, we have the colonies wherein the government instill its laws
and regulations to its local people and communities within a specific country. Next is the
Protectorates wherein a certain country is able to govern itself by its own internal
government but is still controlled by an outside power. While the last one is known as
the Spheres of Influence wherein an outsider claims an over-all control of others
country/area through trading, investment, and military purposes.

POST-TEST: With your knowledge in this chapter, answer these following questions.

1. Create a narrative analysis on the changes occurred in the Philippines based on social,
political, economic and cultural in the 19th century.

Philippines, it is a country known by its wonderful natural resources, hospitable

people, and interesting culture. Just like the other countries, Philippines is also
accompanied by political, economic, and cultural phase that builds its country with
identity and governance. During the 19th century, Philippines was still colonized by the
Spanish regime by Spaniards. They were able to govern the country by mostly their
power and authority. Before, Philippines is just a country filled with ethnic people with
traditional learning; which means that there was no proper education, political
governance, and economic improvement at all. However, the presence of the Spaniards
introduced the Filipino people to education, and more. The social status gradually
improved with innovations that cannot be seen before. The people within the society
were aligned and controlled with identifications and purposes. There is also a presence
of political learning wherein the people were governed by the officials through
providing laws and rules to be followed. The economic was enhanced by the
mechanisms and labors the government and the people provided. There is a trading and
commerce of resources because of the opening of world commerce and trading to the
country. Also, the culture of the Philippines was much more influenced by the Spanish
customs due to the long span of the Spain’s colonization. As what we can notice, the
people especially back in the days were focused on believing Christianity since it has
been introduced and mandated by the Spaniards to the Filipinos. From these, we can
see that there is a big improvement immersed in the country than before. The economic
aspects as well as the political, cultural, and social phase were properly introduce in
which us, the people in the present times were able to experience and inherit it as well.
Even if there is an improvement in the country, there were still injustices observed
and displayed within the society and its people. These injustices happened because the
Spaniards believed that they have the strong power to control the country rather that
its local and native people. These injustices were the presence of Forced Labor or known
as the Polo y Servicio wherein the male people ages 16 to 60 years old were obliged to
rendered forced labor for 40 days a year. They were not given enough equality and
given harsh punishes that lead to death by some of them. There was also less freedom
given to the Filipinos, some were considered as slaves and did not have the freedom to
govern and express their feelings. There were also maladjustment of justice, racial
discrimination, and frailocracy.
The Philippines went through a lot during the 19th century. It paved way for the
country to improve itself in every sectors such as in the politics, economics, culture,
society and were also subjected to injustices that tested its people sacrifice and
strength. And as a Filipino, we must not forget to extend and salute to them because
they have made the country the way it is up to the present.

2. Industrial Revolution was a boom of technology; explain its impact in the world of
imperialism/colonialism.

Industrial Revolution introduced the use of technology and machineries in the

society. It paved way to the expansion and improvement of work force for the
improvement of businesses and trades. It helped the world of imperialism and
colonialism in creating demands for more raw materials and additional markets to sell
products, which countries acquired by taking control of or influencing other countries.
Through the enhancement of mass production and urbanization, it introduced the “New
Imperialism” wherein it associate the expansion of taking over colonies by power and
cost-effectively maintain so many colonies overseas.

3. Create a narrative analysis on how the colonial government governed/imposed its

colonial dominance to the Philippines in the 19th Century.

During the 19th Century, the colonial government imposed its colonial dominance in
the Philippines through the presence Council of Indies wherein it relays the king’s orders
to the Viceroyalty of Mexico and then relayed also to the governor-general in the
Philippines. From this, the upfront dominance mostly came to the council of indies.
Aside from this, the Spanish ruled the Philippines through the revolt by Mexicans to the
Spaniards. Through this, the Philippines was later then administered to Ministry of the
Colonels that has directed by the Council of the Philippines. The governance was
governed by a series of laws and people. There is the Laws of the Indies where the laws
were given to its colonies as well as the Philippines. Next is the Cumplaseisa Veto that
give the governor-general the capacity to mandate the legislative sector by the king.
However some governor-general abuse their power to abuse other people. Aside from
this, there is the Royal Audiencia wherein it is considered as the judicial sector/supreme
court within the country. It is known as the highest court in the Philippines during the
Spanish Era. Lastly, is the Encomienda system that is known as the legal system by which
the Spanish crown attempted to define the status of the indigenous population through
taxes in a specific land.
