cific Objectives:
Describe the concentrations of solutions based from the amount of
te and solvent
ppreciate the importance knowing the right amount of solute and
ent to prepare a desire solution; and
repare saturated and unsaturated solutions using common materials

Expressing Concentration
EXAMPLES
W
Saturated solution
Salt
Containing 100 mL Water
Salt
And 40 g Salt
Salt Water (Salt solution)
Unsaturated solution
Containing 100 mL Water
Water
10 g Salt
And 10 g Salt
(Salt solution)

You can express concentration in other ways such as:
(1) percent by volume, which is the amount of solute in a
given volume of solution expressed as grams solute per
100 milliliter of solution (g/100 mL)
volume of solute
X 100
Percent by volume = volume of solution

EXAMPL
Sample ES
problem 1
How many milliliters of ethyl alcohol are present in a 50 mL bottle of a 70% alcohol
solution?
Calculation for sample problem 1
Since the given is a 70% alcohol solution, it means that 100 mL of the alcohol solution
contains 70 mL ethyl alcohol. So, the following calculations show that in 50 mL of the alcohol
solution, there is 35 mL ethyl alcohol.
Given: Formula:
Volume of solution: 50 ml
Volume of solute
Percent by volume: 70 ml X 100
Unknown: volume of solute Volume of solution
70 mL ethyl alcohol
50 mL solution x = 35 mL ethyl alcohol
100 mL alcohol solution
All portions of a solution have the same concentration. The composition of one part is also
the same as the composition of the other parts. But you can change the concentration of solutions.
This means you can prepare different solutions of sugar in water of different concentrations (for
example, 10%, 20%, or 30%). In the same way, you can prepare different solutions of salt in water.

A one peso coin has a mass of 5.5 grams. How many grams of copper are in a one peso coin
containing 75% copper by mass?
Calculation for sample problem 2
75% by mass means 75 grams of copper in 100 grams of one peso coin.
So, 5.4 grams one peso coin contains,
Given: Formula:
mass of solution: 50 ml mass of solution
Unknown: mass of solute X mass of solute
100 g
Solution:
75 g copper Answer:
X 5.4 g coin = 4.0 g
100 g coin copper
