FOR THE INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT PROVIDER

The Instructional support provider ( parents, guardians, tutor, etc. ) serves as a

facilitator of learning on how every learner be able to achieve the desired content and

performance standards as well as competencies. As your learner/s utilize this Self-Learning

Kit, please take note of the following:

 Before giving the SLK , orient the learner/s in how to learn and work on this.

 While the learner/s is/are working on the SLK, you may opt to communicate with

him/her to talk about the progress they are making. Remind him/her to compile

his/her answer sheets for their learning portfolio.

 Provide a supportive environment to your learner/s to ensure that they are engaged

to accomplish this SLK.

FOR THE LEARNER

Before you work on this SLK, please take note the following reminders:

 Read the foreword to get an idea of what the SLK covers.

 Read well every page. Never move on to the next page, unless you have done what

you are expected to do, in the previous page.

 Answer all the activities and Assessment and go over the Answer Key at the back of

the SLK . This is to find out how well you understand the topic.

3
 After finishing the SLK, be raedy for an online conference with your teacher and

ask him/her about the difficulty and confusion you have encountered.

 Please do not write the SLK itself. Use separate sheets of paper or your activity

notebook. Compile them for your learning portfolio.

Good luck as you begin this SLK!

MELC: Infer that when a body exerts a force on another ,
an equal amount of force Is exerted back on it. (S8FE-Ia-16)

At the end of this module, you should be able to:

1.Identify the action-reaction forces in the different situations.

2. State the Law of Interaction and relate its meaning to the concept

of force as a mutual interaction between objects.

3. Relate the Newton’s third law of motion to the definition of force.

Imagine that you are playing a baseball and have just

hit a ball . The bat exerts a force on the ball that causes
it to move. At the same time that the bat exerts a force
on the ball is also exerting an opposite force on the bat.

The same is true when you lean against a wall . The wall
pushes back on you with a force equal to that which you
exert on the wall. If the force exerted by the wall does not
exist , you will collapse at the wall.

5
According to Sir Isaac Newton, whenever objects A and B interact with each other, they exert

forces upon each other. When you sit in your chair, your body exerts an upward force on

your body. There are two forces resulting from this interaction- a force on the chair which is

the ACTION FORCE and a force on your body is the REACTION FORCE.

Formally stated , Newton’s Third Law of Motion is :

“For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction”

This statement means that in every interaction, there is pair of forces acting on the two

interacting objects. The size of the forces on the first object equals the size of the force on the second

object. The direction of the force on the first object is opposite to the direction of the force on the

second object. Forces always come in pairs- equal and opposite reaction-action pairs.

When an object falls to the ground, the third law of motion is also involved. The fall is because of the

force of attraction of the Earth.

6
FORCES AND INTERACTION

The interaction that drives the nail is the same as the one that halts the hammer.

https://slideplayer.com/slide/8953646/

A hammer exerts a force on the nail and drives it into a board.

 There must also be a force exerted on the hammer to halt it in the process.

 Newton reasoned that while the hammer exerts a force on the nail, the nail exerts a

force on the hammer.

 In the interaction, there are a pair of forces, one acting on the nail and the other acting

on the hammer

7
Read the following illustrative examples that may help you

prepare for the varied activities that will be given.

ROCKET

The rocket has basically a controlled explosion. As the rocket fuel burns, it quikly

expands outwards in every direction, including the rocket itself.

ACTION: The expanding particles push against the rocket.

REACTION: The rocket pushes against the expanding gas particles.

Jumping land from boat.: The action force applied on the boat and the reaction force

push you to land. The action force push the boat backward.

If one object exerts a force on another object, then the second object exerts a force

Of equal strength in the opposite direction on the first object.

ACTION: The air pushes the balloon upward.

REACTION: The balloon pushes the air down

In this module you have learned about the Newton’s third law of motion which

states that when a two bodies interact, they apply forces to one that are equal

in magnitude and opposite in direction. The third law is also known as the law

of action and reaction. This law is important in analyzing problems of static

equilibrium, where all forces are balanced, but also applies to bodies in

uniform or accelerated motion.

BALLOON ROCKET

What you need:

Balloon, drinking straw, string, tape

What to do:

1. Inflate the balloon and tape a piece of drinking straw as shown in the figure above.
2. Insert the string into the drinking straw and position the balloon in the middle of the
string.
3. Tie the ends of the string at the back of the two chairs.
4. Release the air from the balloon and observe carefully what happens.

Discussion:

1. What happens as you release the air from the balloon?

2. Compare the directions of the escaping air and the moving balloon.

3.Did the escaping air hit anything to make the balloon move?

4..How do action-reaction forces act on the two different bodies to produce motion?

changed? Explain why this happened using Third Law of Motion.

2.The bat hits the ball.

3.The road pushes back on the tires.

4.The pin pushes the bowling ball leftwards.

` 5.The cart is harnessed to a horse.

APPLICATION

1. The pressure of the gas inside the balloon becomes greater than the air pressure outside the

balloon. When you release the opening of the balloon gas quickly escape to equalize the

pressure inside with the air pressure outside of the balloon. The escaping exerts a force on the

balloon itself.

2. The gas rushing out of the balloon is the action and the movement of the object in the opposite

direction is the reaction.

3. Yes, because the balloon pushes air out of its nozzle, the air pushes the balloon right in space

the rocket fuel comes out the rocket and goes in the opposite direction to that of the rocket, this

providing the rocket with a momentum to go forward.

4. Whenever two bodies interact with each other, the force exerted by the first body on the second

is called reaction. The action and reaction are equal and opposite.
