Project BRIGHTS
(Better Reading Intervention to Gain Higher order Thinking Skills)
Overview
In connection with the implementation of Department of Education’s Brigada
Pagbasa as part of Brigada Eskwela 2021, the existing innovation of the school which is
Project BRIGHTS (Better Reading Intervention to Gain Higher order Thinking Skills)
was enhanced and developed to align with our Distance Delivery Modalities.
Class advisers from Grades 7 and 8 were encouraged to list down students who
are struggling in their literacy level. The data was based on the existing results of their
academic performance in the last school year. The parents and guardians of the
identified struggling students were informed about the project through Homeroom PTA
Meeting and were oriented with their responsibilities and roles with regards to the
implementation of the project.
To assess their literacy level, they were given a school-made diagnostic test
where reading comprehension. After the results will be assessed, they will be given a
recreational reading workbook which is contextualized and indigenized aligned and
based on their reading level. This will be done quarterly and assessment will be done at
the end of every quarter to identify their improvement.
At the end of the school year, students with exemplary improvement will be given
a special award which is a way of giving reward for the effort done and dedication
towards uplifting and improving their academic performance.
Project Statement
The implementation of Project BRIGHTS aims to:
a. Improve the literacy level of the students by providing them recreational
reading activities which are contextualized and indigenized;
b. Increase learner’s academic performance through giving reading intervention
that would help them understand the modules used in distance learning;
c. Provide an avenue where students develop the live for reading by giving
recreational reading activities which are contextualized and indigenized;
d. Give equal learning opportunity to the learners to have access to quality and
relevant education through reading amidst pandemic.
Process Flow Framework
List down struggling learners frm Grade 7 and Grade 8 through the help of Class
Advisers
Conduct Orientation to parents and guardians via Homeroom PTA Meeting to discuss
their roles and responsibilities in the implementation of the project.
Give diagnostic test to identified struggling learners during the first distributio of
modules via Hatid-Dunong Project
Identify the literacy level of the students based on the result of diagnostic test
Send Recreational Reading Activity Workbook based on their literacy level and
conduct thorough assistance through calls to check their improvements
Accomplishment
As of the writing, Belison National School identified a total of 60 struggling
readers that will be the recipients of Project BRIGHTS. Parents are already oriented
during the Homeroom PTA Meeting and roles and responsibilities are already
discussed. Moreover, the school-made diagnostic test was already distributed to the 60
identified learners with 1000% already returned their responses. With the data at hand,
the school identified 25% or 15 students under frustration level and 75% or 45 students
are under instructional level.
On the other hand, the Recreational Reading Activity Workbooks are now under
quality assurance through the help of English and Filipino Teachers.
Ways Forward
To strengthen the implementation of the project, the following will be considered
for operationalization:
a. Operationalized Library-on-Wheels to provide learners with additional
educational resources.
b. Install Community Reading Hub for learners to assist learners in every
barangays in their reading.
c. Assign “Kaimaw sa Kaaram” or Reading Partner to assist struggling readers
in developing reading skills.
