II.PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT

● INTRODUCTION-

Production Management refers to the application of managerial principles to the

production function in a factory. In other words, production management involves the
application of planning, organizing, directing and controlling the production
process.Production Management deals with decision-making related to the production
process. So that the resulting goods and services are produced in accordance with the
quantitative specifications and demand schedule with minimum cost. It is a set of general
principles for production economies, facility design, job design, schedule design, quality
control, inventory control, work study and cost and budgetary control. With development
and expansion of production organizations in the shape of factories more complicated
problems like location and layout, inventory control, quality control, routing and scheduling
of the production process etc. came into existence,

● GENERATION OF ELECTRICITY-
➢ What is Electricity Generation?
Electricity generation is the process of generating electric power from sources of
primary energy. For utilities in the electric power industry, it is the stage prior to its
delivery (transmission, distribution, etc.) to end users or its storage.Electricity is not
freely available in nature, so it must be "produced" . Production is carried out in power
stations (also called "power plants"). Electricity is most often generated at a power plant
by electromechanical generators, primarily driven by heat engines fueled by combustion
or nuclear fission but also by other means such as the kinetic energy of flowing water
and wind. Other energy sources include solar photovoltaics and geothermal power.

● TRANSMISSION OF ELECTRICITY-

➢ What is transmission of electricity?

16
Electric power transmission is the bulk movement of electrical energy from a
generating site, such as a power plant, to an electrical substation. The interconnected
lines which facilitate this movement are known as a transmission network. This is
distinct from the local wiring between high-voltage substations and customers, which
is typically referred to as electric power distribution. The combined transmission and
distribution network is part of electricity delivery, known as
the electrical grid.

➢ Transmission System from Generation to Various Off

takers / Grid are:
1. SUGEN to Ahmedabad Distribution Area
From SUGEN power plant to the Ahmedabad
distribution area the electricity is transmitted through a 400
kV transmission system with a length of 249 km implemented through Torrent Power
Grid Limited, which is a Joint venture with PGCIL in which Torrent has 74% stake.

2. SUGEN to Surat Distribution Area and to GETCO

From DGEN power plant to Power Grid Corporation of India(PGCIL) Navsari
sub-station the electricity is transmitted through a 400 kV Double Circuit line which
is developed by Torrent Power Limited in lieu of Power Grid Corporation of
India( PGCIL)

4. Other Transmission Networks

The other transmission network is a 220/132 kV transmission system in the
Ahmedabad distribution area.

● DISTRIBUTION OF ELECTRICITY-

❖ What is Distribution of Electricity?

Electric power distribution is the final stage in the delivery of electric power;
it carries electricity from the transmission system to individual consumers.
Distribution substations connect to the transmission system and lower the
transmission voltage to medium voltage ranging between 2 kV and 35 kV with
the use of transformers. Primary distribution lines carry this medium voltage
17
power to distribution transformers located near the customer's premises.
Distribution transformers again lower the voltage to the utilization voltage
used by lighting, industrial equipment and household appliances. Often several
customers are supplied from one transformer through secondary distribution
lines. Commercial and residential customers are connected to the secondary
distribution lines through service drops. Customers demanding a much larger
amount of power may be connected directly to the primary distribution level or
the sub transmission level.

utilization of the men, materials and machine‟ constituting the process. It is a master
blueprint for coordinating all operations performed inside the factory.

A good plant layout strives to attain the following objectives:

1) Minimization of material handling.

● WASTE MANAGEMENT-

20
Torrent Power enhances the circulation of the system based on the ‘Reduce,
Reuse, Recycle’ principle. They have established processes to treat the generated
waste and make every effort to minimise the quantity of waste sent to the landfill.
The company recycles 100% of the fly ash generated from the coal-based plant. The
distribution units undertake oil filtration of power and distribution transformers for
reutilisation of oil. Wet waste is composted and used as manure. More than 90% of
the PVC scrap is recycled and reused at the cable unit. Sludge recovered from raw
water is compacted through the Chamber Filter Press and is used for landfill.

Hazardous waste such as used oils, batteries, e-wastes, biomedical wastes, among
others are disposed of only through SPCB authorised Treatment, Storage and
Disposal Facilities (TSDF) and recyclers. Similarly, plastic and paper waste are
handed over to authorised recyclers. They have substituted materials to decrease the
amount and kind of waste generated. For example, use steel cable drums instead of
wooden ones.

electricity as there are higher tax norms on it. Torrent Power Ltd. is one of the
licensed distributors under the UJALA scheme. The UJALA scheme entails
distribution and sale of LED bulbs at a discounted price. This affects the pricing of
these bulbs in terms of subsidy provided. They also offer an EMI scheme to make
payments for poor sections of the society. The tariffs in 2016-17 were the same with

prices of power provided by Torrent Power Ltd.

rehabilitation post-earthquake in 2001, it has also provided electricity to slums,
invested in health and education as well. Torrent Power Ltd. funds the cardiology
wing of U.N. Mehta Hospital in Gujrat.

● TORRENT POWER PROCESS STRATEGY -

Torrent Power has a broad network of electricity distributing hubs across Gujarat.
In Uttar Pradesh, the agreement to distribute electricity in Agra and Kanpur was
cancelled as it was in direct competition with the state electricity department. Torrent
Power has also invested in unconventional forms of power like wind and solar power.
