GIVING THE VALUE OF NUMBERS EXPRESSED IN

EXPONENTIAL NOTATION

I. Introductory Concept
In this learning activity sheet, you will learn about giving the
value of numbers expressed in exponential notation. The varied
activities you will go through will help you understand the processes.

II. Learning Skills from the MELCs

Gives the value of numbers expressed in exponential notation.

III. Activities
LET US REVIEW
Read and answer the following questions. Write the letter of the
correct answer.
1. What is the expanded form of 134?
A. 13x4 C. 13x13x13x13
B. 13+13+13+13 D. 13÷4

2. How is 94 being read?

A. four raised to nine C. four raised to the ninth power
B. nine raised to four D. nine raised to the fourth power

3. Which exponential form tells that 8 is multiplied by itself 6

times?
A. 8 B. 86 C. 6 D. 68

4. What does the exponential form 710 mean?

A. 7 is used as a divisor 10 times
B. 7 is used as an addend 10 times
C. 7 is used as a factor 10 times
D. 10 is used as a factor 7 times

5. What is the exponential form of 29x29?

A. 292 B. 2929 C. 29x2 D.29

LET US STUDY

Problem: You sent an e-mail to 3 of your friends. Each of your 3

friends sent the e-mail to three more friends. And each of those
friends sent it to 3 other friends, and so on. Find the number of e-
mails sent at stage 5?

The exponential notation of the problem is 35. To give the

value of numbers expressed in exponential notation:

2
3×3×3×3×3=n

9x3
27x3
81x3 = 243

The number of emails sent in all is 243.

Examine the value of numbers expressed in exponential notation.

Expression Factors Value
33 3x3x3 27
32 3x3 9
3 = 36 =
3+3
33 · 33 729
3x3x3x3x3x3
32 · 33 32+3 = 35 = 3x3x3x3x3 243
34 3x3x3x3 81

Any number multiplied by 1 is equal to the number itself. The

symbol of multiplication is ×, ·, and (). Any number raised to the
power of 0 is equal to 1.
So, 50 = 1, 120 = 1

In adding or subtracting expressions involving exponents,

simplify expression with exponent before adding or subtracting the
operation.

Examples:

Give the value of numbers expressed in exponential notation.

1. 24 + 25 = 3. (10)3 - 82
16 + 32 = 48 1000 – 64= 936

2. (24)0 + 32 4. (42)2 – (63)1

1 + 9= 10 42·2 – 63·1
44 - 63
256 – 216 = 40

3
In multiplying expressions involving exponents, simplify first the
expression with grouping symbols such as parentheses ( ), brackets
[ ], or braces { }. If the base is the same, simply add the exponents
and proceed to multiplication.

Examples:

1. The same bases

32 · 33 = 32+3 = 35
3×3×3×3×3 = 243

2. Different bases but the same exponent

22· 32 = (2 · 3)2 = 62
6 × 6 = 36

3. Different bases and Different Exponent

22· 33 = (4)(27) = 108

LET US PRACTICE
Give the value of the following exponential notation
1. 25 = ______________ 4. 73 = ______________
2. 52 · 53 = ______________ 5. 92 = ______________
3. 42 · 52 = ______________

LET US REMEMBER
Any number multiplied by 1 is equal to the number itself. The
symbol of multiplication is ×, ·, and (). Any number raised to the
power of 0 is equal to 1.
So, 50 = 1, 120 = 1

In adding or subtracting expressions involving exponents,

and proceed to multiplication.

LET US PRACTICE MORE
