PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT ACTIVITIES TO LEARNERS FOR THE

IN-PERSON CLASSES

I. Introduction

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic crisis’ effects are

not limited to physical health-related concerns but are also significantly
affecting the mental health and wellbeing of both adults and children
worldwide. One of the sectors severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic is
the education sector, due to inevitable closure of schools. For two (2) school
years, education was implemented through a distance learning modality and
throughout this period, learners and personnel did not have physical
interactions with friends and teachers.
In times of crisis, the education community must come together to
ensure learning continuity and protect the right of every child to education.
The provision of mental health and psychosocial support service is essential to
ensure that children can access opportunities for healing, a recovery. Hence,
the Department of Education, through the Disaster Risk Reduction a
Management Service (DRRMS) together with MAGIS Creative Spaces, Inc.,
developed a Psychosocial Support Activity Pack for Teachers (Kinder Grades
1-3, and Senior High School) to use as a guide in conducting psychosocial
support activities in the classroom. Through the conduct of psychosocial
activities in the classroom, teachers and school personnel can build a
nurturing school environment that supports both the learning and the healing
of the child.
Psychosocial support activities are designed to encourage learners to
establish healthy routines and help them connect with their peers. While their
various ways to provide psychosocial support, conducting recreational and
educational activities such as arts and crafts, storytelling, playing games, as

well as singing, musical instruments, and dance classes might be
incorporated during classes, especially for younger students.

II. Goals and Objectives

The activity is geared towards the following targets aim:

1. to promote the importance of mental health and psychosocial support;

2. to help re-establish relationships between a child with other children, as
well as between children and adults, and can contribute to a sense of
normality and routine;
3. to help learners deal with their problems effectively in order to alleviate
the stress and suffering they are experiencing.

III. Highlights of the Activity

As stated in the DepEd Order No. 34, s. 2022 regarding School

Calendar and Activities for the School Year 2022-2023, psychological support
activities must be conducted during the first week of School Year (SY) 2022-
2023, beginning on August 22, 2022. The psychosocial support activities are
imperative in promoting, protecting, and prioritizing the learners’ socio-
emotional well-being as they transition back to in-person classes. These
activities will be facilitated by classroom advisers or designated teachers.

IV. Lesson learned

Lack of psychosocial support to learners who experienced threats and

conflicts can lead to unhealthy to destructive outcomes such as low self-
esteem, health issues, alcoholism, drug addiction, self-harm, and even
suicide.
To address these issues, there are activities that can be done. These
activities can be achieved by encouraging children to establish healthy

routines, connecting them with others, and facilitating activities that foster
recovery.

V. Suggestion and recommendation

The important role of teachers plays in ensuring that learning

continues. As schools reopen, a lot will depend on teachers to ensure that
learners will be able to continue their education in a safe and healthy
environment; and make up knowledge and skills that may have been lost. The
learner should be encouraged to keep up with schoolwork.
As a teacher, we should be keen enough to observe learners’ behavior
in order to provide applicable intervention whenever it is needed. In this
pressing time, teachers should guide learners to bring back the atmosphere of
learning from online or modular to in-person or face-to-face classes.
