How to read a paper: Three-Pass Method
1. Researchers read research paper frequently which if not done properly can
result in a lot of wasted effort that can be overcome by a useful and effective
three-pass reading strategy which also helps to do a literature review.
2. The first phase involves quick scanning of the paper to get the basic idea and
the requirement of other phases.
3. The second phase involves reading with a greater concern looking at the
pictorial representations and graphs grasping the main idea of the paper
with sustaining facts.
4. In the third phase, study in detail all the ideas, assumptions and results
presented by the author and try to recalibrate it own your own to
understand claims made in the paper and find out the flaws in it too.
5. Doing a literature survey of a topic that is new to you is a great way to put
the three-pass reading technique to use.
A Guide to Reading and Analyzing Academic Articles

• One can have a basic idea of what a particular book is about by looking at the
cover and the contents of it because every script follows some principle.
• The initial step is to look at the article as one and try to understand the about
the author, purpose, viewers of the article.
• The next step is to understand the gist of the article along with the facts,
findings and evidence presented by the author to support his stance.
• The next step is to have a good knowledge of the way the transcript has been
written and understanding the different tricks used by the author for
different instances like when making an assumption, transition words,
switching from claims towards the summary.
• The final step is to have a critical angle towards the article and evaluating the
assumptions, claims, evidences make sense on a larger context and the
overall presentation to your senses.
