im Supun Amaradiwakara today I would like to talk to you about

Floor Systems in Steel-Framed Buildings

Selecting a floor system is one of the first decisions to be made during the concept design phase of any structure.
This frequently necessitates careful consideration of numerous crucial factors, including cost and ease of use,
construction time, buildability, and aesthetics. The floor system in multi-story steel buildings must act as a
horizontal bracing or diaphragm in addition to their vertical load carrying functions. Next slide
As u can see following floor systems are utilized in steel-framed buildings:
 Composite beams and slabs with short or long spans and metal decking
 Precast concrete units with non-composite beams.
 Composite beams and slabs with long spans and metal decking and
 Precast concrete units in composite beams next slide
Now I’m going to describe one structural steel floor system I have seen
Composite Slabs and Steel Decking with Cellular Composite Beams
in this case, the steel beams are provided with openings at regular intervals along their length, these steel beams are
called Cellular beams. The openings are usually circular, but they can also be rectangular or hexagonal. Generally,
the size, spacing and location of the opening is often dictated by design requirements. When cellular beams are
utilized in floor construction, they could either be arranged as long span secondary beams supporting the floor slab
directly or as long span primary beam aligned parallel to the span of the slab supported by other secondary cellular
beams or rolled steel section.
Now, as you can see advantages and disadvantages of this method.
Advantage-
are typically suitable for long span slabs, where having an uninterrupted clear span is a primary design
consideration. Compared with other long span option, they offer the best solution in terms of self-weight
considerations, this also suggests that they’re cost effective. Finally, the openings present in the beams aid
flexibility during installation of building services.
Disadvantage-
The disadvantage of this floor system, the cost of fabricating the cellular beam higher when compared to plain steel
sections.
