Tiakina ngā tāngata, tiakina tō wairua, tiakina te taiao/Respect for others, self and the environment
It is week 9 and we have been busy here at kura. We had a fabulous day for our Matariki Celebration

Property Update
We are nearly there whānau! Our Canopy should have the cover added on Monday and Tuesday next
week, when the weather is settled for this task. Then the Turf will be put in and the hoops added. Still a
little bit to go but getting closer.
Now that the building is demolished for the other project we can prepare to build or move classrooms to
be upgraded for Te Whānau Whāriki tamariki and Mua I Malae tamaiti. This has been a long time
coming for all of our tamariki across our kura to have classrooms that are warm and modern and have
decent bathrooms for all staff and children. We will be working on this next phase to get started quickly
and will update more soon.
Mua i Malae
Talofa lava, this week our Mua i Malae classes are so fortunate to have the opportunity to learn and
understand Matariki and why it is so important to tangata whenua of this motu. Matariki is the Māori
name for the cluster of stars that rises in midwinter and for many Māori, heralds the start of the new
year. We had a delicious breakfast prepared by Te Whanau Whariki to celebrate Matariki at our kura
this morning. Fa’afetai TWW for your kindness. Our MiM Matariki rotation today has engaged tamaiti in
so many tasks to enhance their understanding of Te Reo and Matariki. Our senior class learning this
Term is full of new learning and interesting tasks to engage tamaiti. Researching and investigating our
Inquiry has given children new information to enrich their kete of knowledge. The Lego Master Lady
has helped tamaiti integrate what they have learned from our Inquiry and Art. Writing about the Inquiry
is also part of integration of classroom learning. Manuia le Vaiaso.
Kiwi Connection
The Village has been having a terrific time preparing for Matariki, learning the story and names of the
stars, making god's eyes and learning songs. We enjoyed the rotation of learning string games, titī
tōrea and creating some Matariki drama story links. It was great to be able to sit down and enjoy kai
together after the constellation had become visible in the sky and to celebrate this together.
What a great experience it has been over these last few weeks. The children and adults in the Hub
have really enjoyed learning about the significance that Matariki holds in Māori culture. We have
explored the origin stories, what each star in the clutter represents and how we can use this knowledge
to celebrate in our own way.
Monday was a great chance to experience Matariki as a school. We shared kai and our understanding
as a whole in the hall, we interacted through the traditional māori game of ki-o-rahi, we created a
collective Manu Aute (kite) that we each have a feather with our aspirations for the year ahead and
much more. Here are some of the things we got up to.
Te Whānau Whāriki
E te tī, e te tā, tēnā koutou katoa. E kainamu ana te mutunga o te wāhanga, ā, kātahi te wiki nui ko
tēnei! Mānawatia a Matariki e hoa mā. Kāore e kore i huihui koutou ko ō koutou whānau i ngā rangi
whakatā kua taha ake nei. Ka kanapa mai ngā whetū, ka huri ngā whakaaro ki a rātou kua
whetūrangitia waihoki ki ngā rangi hoki kei mua i a tātou. Ko te anamata kei te pīataata mai! Kia ū ngā
whatu ki ngā mahi mīharo a ā tātou tamariki.
Te Rā Whakanui i a Matariki
Kua puta a pito, nanea ana a tia i tā te niho wera! Namunamuā te kai hākari i te rā whakanui i a Matariki. I
horahia ngā hua ki ā mātou tēpu hei whakarauika i a Te Whānau Whāriki. Koia kei a koutou tamariki mā, mō
koutou i whai wāhi mai ki ngā mahi mīharo hei hāpai ake i te mātahi o te tau. Mānawatia a Matariki!
Whakaahua o te rā
L’Archipel
Matariki Day, quelle journée! The whole unit had a great time together celebrating Matariki on Monday. The
Seniors had planned workshops for the Middles and Juniors to do, each relating to one of the stars of
Matariki. For example, in the Tupu-ā-nuku workshop, tamariki planted a seed and in the Ururangi workshop
they decorated a kite. After that, it was time for some Matariki kai in the hall: hashbrown, pancakes and
whipped cream, Milo and orange juice. A feast. Happy Matariki everybody!
