1.0 Introduction

This is an engineering specification, which gives details about the equipment required for
Busbar Ducting systems.

Note that any changes to this document from its last revision are highlighted by a bold
vertical bar to the left of each area of change. Should there be a need to consult this
document’s change history log, refer in the first instance to its custodian (EE). References
made throughout this guideline are numbered inside square brackets [ ] and may be found in
the Bibliography (18.0).

Cross-references between sections and sub-sections within this specification are numbered
inside round brackets ( ).

The manufacturer, and QP, should take note of the technical and documentation
requirements described herein for the tendering stage of any inquiries. The word ‘tender’, or
its derivatives, being printed in bold typeface highlight these requirements.

2.0 Custodian

The Custodian of this specification is EE, who is responsible for the accuracy and quality of
its contents and for its future revisions, where these are required to reflect industry trends or
changes to QP business practices.

3.0 Purpose

The purpose of this specification is to describe the QP requirements for industrial type
Busbar Ducting systems.

4.0 Application

This equipment will be located outdoors in a harsh environment and indoors in purpose
designed switch-rooms, and installed at QP oil and gas processing plants, refineries,
chemical plants, NGL plants, off-shore platforms, industrial sites, and the like. This
specification shall be used to purchase equipment for both existing and new plants.

5.0 Scope of Supply

5.1 Busbar Ducting System

This specification details the minimum technical requirements for the industrial type of
High Voltage/Low Voltage Busbar ducting rated 600V to 15kV.

For the purposes of this specification the term busbar ducting will generally include
copper busbars that are contained inside a rectangular insulating assembly, the insulation,
adapters for connecting into the transformer terminal boxes, adapters for connecting into the
SWGR, gaskets, supports, right-angle or angled sections, wall penetration sections and
flexible copper terminal connections. The scope of supply will vary depending upon the
equipment to which the busbar ducting will be connected e.g. switchgear, transformers,
generators, motors.

As a rule the requirements of this specification shall be adhered to. However, national and
local regulations may exist in which some of their requirements are more stringent. The
Supplier shall determine by careful scrutiny which of the requirements are more stringent
and which combination of requirements will be acceptable as regard to safety, economics
and legal aspects.

In all cases the Supplier shall inform QP in writing of any deviation from the requirements
of this specification which is considered to be necessary in order to comply with national
and local regulations. QP may then negotiate with the authorities concerned with the object
of obtaining agreement to follow this specification as closely as possible.

5.2 Definition of Non-Technical Terms

For the purposes of this document the following definitions of terms and interpretations
shall apply regardless of any other meaning the words may have in other respects.

Shall The word shall is to be understood as mandatory.

Should The word should is to be understood as being strongly recommended.

QP Is Qatar Petroleum that initiates the project and ultimately pays for its
design and construction. QP will generally specify the technical
requirements. QP may also include an agent or consultant to act on
its behalf.

Contractor(s) Is the party which carries out all aspects or part of the design,
engineering, procurement, and construction and commissioning of
the plant. QP may sometimes undertake all or part of the duties of the
Contractor.

Supplier Is the party, which supplies equipment.

Manufacturer Is the party that manufactures or supplies equipment and services to


perform the duties specified.

End-user A third party that has already purchased the same equipment as that
is being offered by the manufacturer, or Supplier.

Free-issue Equipment purchased by QP from a third party. The manufacturer


shall install this equipment in the SWGR.

Inspection This shall be taken to mean a visual inspection of the equipment and
installation.

Testing This shall be taken to mean the routine tests normally carried out at
the factory of the Supplier.

Calibration This shall be taken to mean the special testing of measuring devices
and control systems. This is necessary to verify the characteristics of
the equipment, and to fix the settings and adjustments before the
equipment is put into normal service.

Commissioning This shall be taken to mean energisation and the final tests and
checks at QP’s site subsequent to the energisation necessary to
ensure that each circuit satisfactorily performs its function.

5.3 Definition of Technical Terms

The definitions for some technical words and abbreviations used in this specification are: -

COMPARTMENT Space dedicated for one specific function e.g. motor starter, circuit
or CUBICLE breaker.

TIER A vertical group of compartments of single width with a busbar


chamber at the top, a busbar dropper (riser) chamber at the side or
rear, and a wire way at the side.

SECTIONS Two or more tiers connected either side- to-side or back-to-back that
will be shipped from the manufacturer’s works to the job site as a
single entity.

SWGR The complete switchboard comprising all compartments, cubicles,


tiers, sections, control gear etc. that comply with the purchase order.

TRUCK The moveable part of the compartment or cubicle to which is


permanently attached the CB or contactor.

DATA SHEETS This includes all relevant data sheets, diagrams and drawings issued
with the enquiry or purchase order package.

5.4 Guarantee and Warranty

The guarantee and warranty requirements shall be described in the project documentation.

5.5 Quality Assurance and Control

The manufacturer shall have a QA/QC system based on ISO 9000 - 9004 controlling the
quality of the design and assembling work during all stages of the production process.

6.0 Service and Environmental Conditions

The atmosphere throughout all QP plants shall be considered to be corrosive, as normally


associated with oil and gas processing plants, refineries, chemical plants, NGL plants, off-
shore platforms, industrial sites, and the like. In addition, for offshore and coastal locations,
the atmosphere shall be considered as salt laden.

High humidity is experienced in all areas and condensation will occur on all equipment
during some period of its lifetime and therefore all components, nuts, bolts and washers etc.
shall be of corrosion resistant material except where specifically stated otherwise and shall
be tropicalised.

6.1 Ambient Temperatures

The ambient air temperatures for enclosed modules and equipment rooms shall generally be
within defined conditions as dictated by the heating and ventilation (HVAC) system.
However, to satisfy conditions that may occur when the HVAC is inoperative, the internal
ambient air temperatures shall be considered as a maximum of 45°C.

The manufacturer shall take this into account when calculating and quoting de-rating factors
for normal rated currents and fault currents.

The following ambient temperatures are used as general design conditions and are extracted
from the QP specification ES.2.03.0001 [Appendix E], which gives more detail: -

a) Halul Island and offshore platforms.

Design summer dry bulb: 37°C.


Maximum summer dry bulb: 43° C
Electrical Equipment design to 43°C

b) Mesaieed and Dukhan.

Design summer dry bulb: 45°C


Maximum summer dry bulb: 52°C
Electrical Equipment design to 52°C

6.2 Atmospheric Conditions for Indoor Installation

The equipment will normally be located in a dedicated room provided with HVAC.
However, allowance shall be made for the entry of dust, salt, and sulphur contaminated air
when the doors are open or cable entrances through the floor are uncovered during
maintenance and construction periods.

Depending on the area where the equipment will be installed, condensation inside the
equipment during the above periods cannot always be excluded. Proper measures e.g. by
installing panel heaters shall be considered, especially for the H.V. components such as
busbars and standoff insulators. The components shall be made fungus-proof and
tropicalised.

6.3 Hazardous Area Certification

Normally bus ducts are not used in hazardous areas. However, if the equipment is located in
a Zone 1 or Zone 2 hazardous area, it shall be certified accordingly.

7.0 International Reference Standards

The IEC international standards shall take precedence over other referenced standards.

8.0 General Requirements

8.1 Supplier’s Product Range

It is a general requirement that the Supplier offers only equipment that is within his standard
range of equipment, and that such equipment is not scheduled to be withdrawn from
production within 5 years of it being installed at the QP site. Any equipment that is ‘bought-
in’ from a third party shall also be from a standard range of products from the third party, but
subject to the approval of QP. The equipment shall not be a new product-line that has not
been sold in reasonable numbers to similar end-users as QP. The Supplier shall include in his
quotation a list of end-users that have purchased the same equipment being offered.

8.2 Origin of Main Power Components

The Supplier shall offer main power components busbar assemblies, power cable
terminations, tier steel-work, that are all manufactured by the Supplier in one country;
preferably the one country where the purchase order will be managed by the Supplier.

8.3 Project Management

The Supplier shall nominate a single person to manage the project and this person shall be the
single ‘focal point’ for all discussions, meetings, communications, correspondence, and the
like, between the Supplier and QP.

8.4 Supplier’s Drawings and Documents

All drawings and documents shall be expressed in the English language and units of measure
shall be generally in accordance with the S.I. system.

The Supplier shall submit with his quotation plan and elevation drawings to illustrate the
proposed arrangement of the busbar ducting and its terminal equipment, e.g. switchgear,
transformer terminal box, generator terminal box. These drawings shall also indicate
allowances for space required for maintenance, access and the removal of the whole or
sections of the busbar ducting system.

The Supplier shall submit with his quotation elevation drawings to show the support locations
and the force in each support.

8.5 Short Circuit Ratings

The busbar ducting shall be capable of carrying continuously its rated currents at the site
conditions in all its circuits simultaneously without reducing its making, breaking, dynamic or
short time thermal operating duty ratings, or the switchgear attached to it. These ratings shall
be no less that those of the equipment attached to it, e.g. generators, switchgear.

8.5.1 Short circuit current withstand capability

The Supplier shall provide detailed information in his tender documents for the I-squared-t
short circuit current withstand capability which is applicable over the time range of 0.5 to
10.0 seconds. This information shall be given in the form of equations or graphs.

8.6 Temperature Rise

When carrying full load continuously the temperature of the busbars shall not exceed 55ºC.
The stated current ratings are established by test in ambient temperatures not exceeding a 24-
hour average of 35ºC with peaks not exceeding 40ºC. In conditions of higher ambient
temperature the busbars should be de-rated as follows:-

40ºC 95%
45ºC 90%
50ºC 85%

8.6.1 Temperature Rise of Conductors

The busbar conductors shall be capable of carrying their rated current continuously without
exceeding a conductor temperature rise of 55 º C above the ambient temperature of 50 º C.

Under short-circuit conditions the temperature of the conductors shall not exceed 200 º C
during a time duration of one second.

8.7 Voltage and Frequency Variations

All components shall, as a minimum and unless otherwise stated in data sheets or project
documents, have their nominal ratings determined by QP’s nominal system voltages and
frequency. These components shall operate correctly, continuously and without being
overloaded when QP’s nominal system voltages deviate by plus or minus 10 % for long
periods of time. Likewise when principal’s nominal system frequency deviates by plus or
minus 5 %.

8.8 Type Test Certification

The components of the complete busbar ducting system shall have been type tested by an
internationally recognised testing authority at the required operating and short circuit duty in
accordance with IEC 298 and other relevant IEC standards. Any de-rating of the normal
operating current, or any of the various fault current duties, due to the high ambient
temperatures that are usually experienced at QP sites shall be clearly stated in the documents
issued by the manufacturer to QP. The default ambient temperature shall be 50 º C if it is not
specified on the data sheets or in the project specification for the busbar ducting system.

Certification detailed above shall include tests with insulation fully fitted to busbars and their
connections.

9.0 Common Design and Construction Requirements

The busbar ducting system shall be non-ventilated, non-hygroscopic, flame retardant, dust-
tight, corrosion resistant and weatherproof.

The design and construction of the busbar ducting enclosure shall be such as to minimise the
passage of flame, vapour or gases between compartments or along its length.

If a metal enclosure is offered then it shall be a sheet steel construction at least 1.5 mm thick
and hot dip galvanized. Where the degree of protection IP55 is required the enclosure shall be
manufactured from 2mm zinc coated sheet steel and have bolted on cover plates fitted with
neoprene gaskets to form a weatherproof seal. Joints between lengths of trunking shall be the
gasketted flange type.

9.1 Safety

The busbar ducting components shall be designed to ensure maximum safety during all
operating conditions, regular inspection, testing, maintenance and installation.

9.2 Short-Circuit K Values for Copper Conductors

The short circuit K values for use in I-squared-t calculations, for copper conductors
surrounded by the Supplier’s insulation materials, enclosure casing etc. shall be quoted by the
Supplier in his bid documentation.

The time duration of the full fault current shall normally be taken to be no less than one
second.

9.3 Derating Factors for Busbar Ducting Installed in the Air

The busbar ducting may be installed in the vertical or horizontal plane. The Supplier shall
provide de-rating factors for his busbar ducting system for these two situations, preferably in
the form of numerical tables.

9.4 Insulating Medium of the Busbars

The insulating medium of the busbars shall be one of the following: -

a) Ambient air with plastic material.


b) Resin based encapsulation.

If the method of a) is offered then the plastic material shall be extruded

9.5 Busbars

Busbars shall have the following features: -

• Non-phase segregation.

• Hard-drawn high conductivity copper. Aluminium shall not be used for any current
carrying components.

• The phase colouring and rotation required at the terminations shall be as shown in Table
9.5.A.

• Current rating and cross-sectional area shall be the same throughout the length of the
busbar ducting assembly.

• All busbars and connections shall be fully insulated. Insulation materials shall withstand
without damage the effects of carrying the rated short time withstand currents that can
pass through the busbars.

9.5.1 High Voltage Busbars

The HV busbars shall be arranged for three-phase three-wire operation.

9.5.2 Low Voltage Busbars

The LV busbars shall be arranged for three-phase and neutral operation unless stated in the
requisition documents. The neutral shall be at least 50% rated and fully insulated

9.5.3 Joints

The jointing of busbars shall be given particular attention in their design. All jointing surfaces
shall be silver plated and covered by insulated boots or covers.

Where necessary flexible joints shall be incorporated into the complete system, especially for
long routes and at the termination equipment e.g. transformer terminal boxes. The Supplier
shall confirm the need for such flexible joints in his bid documentation.

9.6 Busbar Ducting

Busbar ducting for connecting the power transformers to the SWGR or for connecting
between two enclosures of SWGR, instead of cables, shall be provided by the Supplier where
specified on the data sheets. The Supplier shall be responsible for coordinating the design and
delivery of the busbar ducting, unless agreed otherwise in writing with QP. The Scope of
Supply shall include, adapters for connecting into the transformer terminal boxes, adapters for
connecting into the SWGR, gaskets, supports, right-angle or angled sections, wall penetration
sections, flexible copper terminal connections, sun shades, special tools and all documents for
erection and testing. The busbar ducting shall be from the Supplier’s standard product range
and shall be Type Tested for fault current duty, in a similar manner to that of the SWGR.

No proto-type designs shall be offered nor used.

The normal current and fault current ratings of the busbar ducting shall be at least the same as
the SWGR main busbars, and shall be certified accordingly as required in 8.8. above. If any
part of the busbar ducting is to be installe d outdoors then the whole of the busbar ducting
system shall be rated for the outdoor ambient temperatures. The Supplier shall state what
derating factors will be used from a standard temperature of 50ºC.

Unless otherwise stated the busbar ducting shall be fabricated from sheet steel, dust protected
and weatherproof, and shall include a weatherproof seal for the entry through the switch-room
wall.

9.7 Flame Propagation, Smoke Production and Toxic Gas Emission

9.7.1 Flame Propagation

All busbar ducting systems shall be constructed with materials that have ‘reduced propagation
of fire’ characteristics (similar to power cables) because all or part of them may be installed
indoors.

9.7.2 Smoke Production and Toxic Gas Emission

The busbar ducting system materials shall be chosen such that the hazard of smoke and toxic
gas emission ( e.g. Hydrochloric acid gas, halogens ) during a fire shall be minimised.

9.8 Earthing Facilities for the Busbar Ducting System

Each section of Busbar ducting shall be fitted with a copper earth continuity conductor sized
according to switchgear earthing busbar.

9.9 Connection of QP’s Conductors.

QP will provide full details of the type and construction of the external conductors, which will
be connected to the busbar ducting system.

9.10 Labels

The Busbar ducting system shall be clearly labelled with the operating voltage and full
current carrying rating as well as short time rating. The Busbar ducting system shall be fitted
with traffolyte labels clearly identifying the equipment to which it is connected at both ends
and also the main point of isolation

Labels shall be fixed using permanent fixtures to avoid easy removal.

Labels shall be installed at regular intervals and at any changes in direction.

A designation la bel shall be screwed to each section of Busbar ducting. The designations shall
be those shown on the arrangement drawing and shall, on separate labels if necessary, clearly
indicate orientation to suit installation.

The designated label shall have black characters engraved on a white background, the
characters having a minimum height of 5mm.

Warning labels shall be screwed to both sides of the ducting at intervals of approximately
2.5m (i.e. two labels per unit length of Busbar ducting) and such that a la bel is adjacent to

every inspection/maintenance entry and at both ends of each ducting run. The labels shall
warn of the electrical danger within the ducting and shall forbid the use of the ducting as a
walkway, platform etc.

The warning labels shall have red characters of suitable size engraved on a white background.

All labels and fixing screws shall be of a non-corrodible material. Self-tapping fixing screws
shall not be used.

9.11 Painting

Painting shall be the manufacturer’s standard for tropical, harsh and marine environments and
shall be described in his tender documents. QP shall advise the required colour in the data
sheets.

9.12 Tapping Boxes

Tapping boxes if required, shall be ‘clamp on type’ fitted with HRC fuse fittings, MCCB’s, or
switch-fuses as detailed on the drawings/specifications. The enclosures shall be constructed
from 1.2mm Zinc coated sheet steel with the paint finish as previously described. Tapping
boxes shall be complete with integral flexible cables terminating in purpose made shrouded
brass connection clamps for attachment to the busbars without drilling.

9.13 Anti Condensation Heaters

The enclosure shall be equipped with anti-condensation heaters of sufficient capacity to


prevent the formation of condensation within the enclosure under the ‘service conditions’
specified in Section 6.0 of this specification (not required for cast resin insulated busbars)

The heater shall be supplied from the single -phase supply and terminated in a weatherproof
terminal box fitted with an undrilled gland plate and warning label. The voltage will be stated
on the drawing/data sheets attached to the material requisition.

On/Off switches and thermostats shall also be provided.

10.0 Inspection

The Busbars shall be inspected by QP or the nominated representative, called the Inspector.

The Supplier shall allow the Inspector all reasonable access to his factory and documentation
with regard to the busbars at any times during its manufacture. The Inspector shall give no
less than 10 working days notice for pre-planned inspection visits. The Scope of Inspection
shall be agreed in advance between QP and the Supplier.

Approval by the Inspector shall not relieve the Supplier of his responsibilities under the terms
of the purchase order and this specification and its accompanying documents.

11.0 Testing Specifications

11.1 General

The manufacturer shall have a QA / QC system based on ISO 9000 - 9004 controlling the
quality of the design and assembling work during all stages of the production process.

The manufacturer shall perform the following tests in the factory:-

• High Voltage test


• Insulation test
• Temperature rise test (to be carried out on the first of each rating of busbar ducting
manufactured).

11.2 Type Tests

Type tests shall be carried out in accordance with IEC 439 Part 2.

Certificates shall be available at the quotation stage. Certificates issued by independent testing
laboratories are required.

11.3 Witnessed Routine Tests

Type Test certificates shall be made available at the witnessed routine testing occasion.

The Supplier shall give QP at least 15 working days notice of the intended date for the routine
tests, which shall be witnessed by QP or his nominated representative.

12.0 Special Tools

All special tools required for erection, commissioning and maintenance shall be provided by
the Supplier.

13.0 Spare Parts

The manufacturer shall recommend and submit separately priced spare parts lists to cover
commissioning and two years of operation.

The manufacturer shall provide any maintenance tools that are specially designed for use with
the busbar.

Spare parts shall be suitably marked and numbered for easy identification. They shall be
packed to enable them to be stored for a long period of time at the QP site. They will be
stored in wooden boxes in suitable groups for easy access.

Where necessary spare parts shall be coated in a protective material in order to prevent
deterioration in the site ambient conditions.

14.0 Documentation

All drawings and documents shall be expressed in the English language and units of measure
shall be generally in accordance with the S.I. system.

The manufacturer shall ensure that his sub-Suppliers or sub-contractors provide the required
documentation.

14.1 Drawing and Data

Drawings and data shall be provided by the Supplier in accordance with the standard forms
attached to the material requisitions.

In addition to the instructions in standard forms the Supplier shall comply with the following
additional requirements for installations, operating and maintenance manuals.

• The front cover, spine and inside page shall state the purchase order number and
Suppliers reference number.
• The inside front page shall carry an index listing the contents of each section of the
manual.
• Individual sections shall be complete and shall refer to equipment actually supplied.
• Published data shall also be supplied including published data for bought-in items.
• Full details of any special equipment shall be clearly set out in separate sections.
• A punch list of “do’s” and “don’ts” shall be included.
• Full details for installation and setting up shall be included.
• Recommended test data shall be stated, covering initial and also regular testing i.e.
values for High Voltage a.c. or d.c. etc. shall be given.
• Items requiring regular inspection, checking, testing, and maintenance shall be listed
and the time scale clearly indicated.
• Important items shall be cross-referenced to other parts of the manual as necessary.

14.2 Tender Documentation

Data sheets that require the manufacturer to provide information on them shall be completed
as required by QP, and submitted as part of the manufacturer’s tender documentation.

The requirements in the document and as listed below, for submissions as tendering
information shall be strictly complied with..

Drawings
• Plan and elevation drawings to illustrate the proposed arrangement and which shall
show the main dimensions.

disadvantages of the manufacturers system offered (enclosed busbars or cast resin

• Support details

• Installation instructions for floor and wall penetrations
• List of Performance tests to be included.
• A list of Routine tests to be included.
• Copies of Type Test Certificates.
• Sales brochures for the particular equipment being offered.
• List of customers similar to QP in the Middle East region that have purchased the
same, or similar, equipment.

A list of deviations from the QP’s specification. Each item in the list shall be described in
detail, giving the reason for the deviation and any alternatives that the manufacturer wishes
to offer and to be considered acceptable. If this list is not provided it shall be deemed that
there are no deviations to QP Standard Specification.

14.3 Purchase Order Documentation

The manufacturer shall submit the following drawings after the purchase order has been
placed and as various revisions throughout the project: -
• Functional specification giving full details of the busbar ducting offered.
• Installation details.
• Termination details and drawings for Switchgear/Transformer/MCCs etc.
• Floor and wall penetration details.
• Drawings and details of supports.

14.4 Documents for the Delivery, Installation, Operation and Maintenance

The manufacturer shall supply at least the following documents after receipt of the order and
before the FAT takes place: -
• Instruction manuals for, transportation, long-term storage at site, installation,
commissioning and maintenance. These documents must be specific to the
equipment as purchased and not of a general nature.
• Comprehensive list of spare parts, cross-referenced to the cubicle equipment layout
drawings, for use after commissioning has been completed.
The manufacturer shall supply the following documents after the FAT takes place: -
• Report of the Witnessed Routine (FAT) Tests.

• Final revisions of all of the above documents.

All documents shall show the relevant purchase order number, item and the manufacturer’s
references, dates, and shall be distributed as specified in the requisition.

15.0 Packing

Packing of the busbar ducting shall prevent ingress of moisture or damage to the sections
during transportation and storage.

Packing shall be for hot, high humidity; tropical conditions and manufacturer shall advise
any special storage requirements.

Labelling of the packages shall be detailed in the requisition documents

16.0 Approval to Deviate

Strict compliance with this standard specification is required. Any deviation must obtain
prior written approval from QP.

17.0 Revision History Log

A record or log shall be kept of the revision history of each engineering document, and be
incorporated in the document’s accompanying electronic “readme” file. In this way, there
should be no need for a history log to be included in a document. The only details of its
latest approved revision need be shown.

The following is recommended for the contents of a document’s revision history log: -
