THE FRAMEWORK OF THE PLMUN CURRICULUM

The degree programs under the different colleges of PLMUN are fully compliant with the prescribed
guidelines set by the specific memorandum orders issued by the Commission on Higher Education
(CHED). At the heart of these programs is an institutional curriculum framework that makes
education in PLMUN truly distinct from others, responsive to the changing world, and empowering
to students.

The need to have a clear and special framework behind the curriculum emerged when the
departments and offices in PLMUN undertook a comprehensive program review and planning that
ran from late 2021 to early 2022 as part of efforts to improve the university that was in transition
administratively. The curriculum became a highlight of the discussions especially since one of the
major changes in the university was the establishment of the Institute of Integrated Development
Education, an institute tasked in coordination with other offices to oversee the curriculum,
instruction, and overall quality and performance of the programs in the university. Among the
important considerations raised were the kind of education that PLMUN aims to provide in the
context of heightened globalization, how general education subjects must be taught under a core
curriculum, and even the number of units offered per program.

Further establishing the urgency for such a framework was the fact that education had significantly
changed since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Indeed, schools and universities had to adjust
to be able to continue providing education that was responsive and relevant. For PLMUN, clearly
this meant an overhaul of the curriculum.

After a series of intense and thorough deliberations, the top management and academic units of the
university agreed that the way forward was through an institutional framework organized into four
phases that would allow for the holistic formation of PLMUN students. Those phases are:

1. Grounding: Establishing fundamental knowledge, skills, and values

2. Immersing: Deepening understanding and engaging localities
3. Exploring: Reconnoitering globalities and rethinking the complex world
4. Positioning: Forging identity toward sustainability, justice, and social transformation

The framework was designed such that students would undergo a logical, sensible, and focused
formation throughout college. It starts with the basics and ensures that students have a solid
foundation in terms of the knowledge, skills, and values needed to progress to more difficult and
complicated levels of learning. It also equips students with competencies required to intelligently
make sense of and effectively address local and global issues and challenges. Ultimately, it hones
students to be agents of positive change and transformation in society.

Having this framework for the curriculum served as a milestone for PLMUN as it provided a
concrete reinforcement of the university’s educational goals and a solid confirmation of its role and
values as an institution of higher learning. In many ways it fostered a profound sense of collective
mission and purpose among members of the PLMUN community.
