INTRODUCTION

Introduction/Overview.
This module will provide Comprehensive knowledge about the Lodging facilities : Hotels, Motels, All –
suites, Limited - service hotels, and Extended - stay hotels

At the end of the topic Module the students will be able to:
1. Understand the different types of lodging facilities.
2. Enumerate the different types of lodging facilities.

History
• Early roadside inns were mentioned in several instances in both the Old and New Testaments.
The early reference to the inn is found in the Bible when Joseph, Christ’s foster father, was told,
“There is no room at the inn.”
• In the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, German and English made frequent reference to the
“inn.” The development of the inn in the late medieval period was due to the improvements in
security in many European societies. It had become safe to travel.

Types of Lodging Facilities


1. Hotels – Usually offers a full range of accommodations and services.
• Types of Hotels or Classification of hotels by their type:
➢ Size - Or number of rooms
✓ Under 200 rooms
✓ 200 to 399 rooms

✓ 400 to 700 rooms


✓ More than 700 rooms
✓ The above categories enable hotels of similar size to compare operating procedures and
statistical results.

2. Motels – Offers a limited range of services. Size of these properties averages from 10 to 50 units.
3. All-Suites – This concept was developed in the 1980s as a separate marketing concept. Special
feature of these hotels are living room and separate bedroom, kitchenette and specialty shops.
4. Limited-Service Hotels – Limited-service hotels appeared in the mid-1980s. Hampton Inn and
Marriott were among the first organizations to offer limited-service properties. Its concept to
limited service was developed for a specific segment of the market: business and cost-conscious
travelers.
5. Extended-Stay Hotels – Extended-stay properties were designed to offer guests a home-away-
from-home atmosphere over long stays precipitated by business, leisure, or personal necessity.
Levels of Service in the HOTEL
1. Full Service – Is a level that provides a wide range of conveniences for the guest.
2. Limited Service – It emphasizes basic room accommodations, guest amenities, and minimal public
areas.
3. Extended Stay – Is a level of service that offers a home-away-from-home atmosphere for business
executives, visitors, and families planning to visit an area for an extended period.

• 1 star – Good, better than average
• 2 star – Very good
• 3 star – Excellent
• 4 star – Outstanding
• 5 star / 6 star– One of the best in the country
• 7 star – One of the best in the world
