Instruction: Write the null and alternative hypotheses in words and in symbols for each situation. Write your answer on
your answer sheet.

H0: μ= P30,000

5. A fitness club claims that their routines can elevate heart rates of up to 200 bpm on the average. A critic says
this is an overestimate of the actual average.
Null hypothesis:
-the telecommunications company has 80% of all of the postpaid subscribers.

Alternative hypothesis:
-the telecommunications company does not have 80% of all post paid subscribers.

H0: p= 0.8

9. Suppose we are interested in the average performance of a group of students in English test. Specifically, we are
interested in deciding whether or not the mean performance of the students is say for example, equal to 85. Which of the
following represents the null hypothesis of the given situation?
c. The mean score in English of the students is greater than 85.

10. From the situation in number 4, which of the following is the alternative hypothesis?

n=50.

a. 0.706

b. 0.706

For 13 – 15 items, refer to the situation below:

The body mass index is calculated by dividing a person’s weight by the square of his/her
height. That is, body mass index equals weight/ (height )2. This measure determines whether
a person is overweight or not. Suppose that a person is overweight if his/her body mass index
is above 24 kg/m2 and a random sample of 20 individuals from a certain place have the
following body mass indices:
24.2 33.1 24.2 29.9 30.4 32.8 17.5 23.1 28.7 24.2
27.8 29.4 19.6 28.5 28.2 25.7 22.0 29.0 35.9 18.5
13. What is the mean body mass index of the random sample of 20 individuals and its standard
deviation?
a. 26.64 and 4.96
14. What distribution will be used in calculating the given situation?
D. t-distribution
15. What is the calculated test statistic of the given situation?

d. 2.38

16.. The statement “There is a difference between a parameter and a specific value.” is called
_______ ALTERNATIVE HYPOTHESES
17. When the value of the test statistics lies on the rejection region, we will __________ the null
hypothesis. NULL HYPOTHESES

18. In hypothesis testing, the maximum allowable probability of committing a type I error is symbolized
by __________ ALPHA

19. A 99% confidence level corresponds to a/an ____1%______ level of significance.

20. The CRITICAL VALUE separates the rejection region from the non-rejection region.

ADDITONAL ACTIVITY-PERFORMANCE ACTIVITY

A. Reject or Retain?
Instruction: Identify the null hypothesis, alternate hypothesis, level of significance and level
of confidence of the following. Afterwards, sketch the graph of each item to show the
rejection, non-rejection region, and critical value. (left-tailed, right-tailed, or two-tailed)

1. A librarian of a school claims that all their grade 8 students read an average of 10
storybooks a month with a standard deviation of 2 books. A random sample of grade 8

11
students read an average of 12 books a month and a standard deviation of 1 book. The
confidence statement is 95%.

μ = 10
H0: μ = 10
H1: μ ≠ 10
Level of significance (a) = 0.05
Level of confidence (1-a) = 95%

Sinend ko pic sa messenger yung two tailed

2. A government agency is investigating a complaint from some concerned citizens who said
that there is short-weight selling of rice in a certain town. An agent manufacturer took a
random sample of 20 sacks of “50-kilo” sacks of rice from a large shipment and finds that the
mean weight is 49.7 kilogram with a standard deviation of 0.35 kilogram. The level of
significance is 0.0

μ = 50
H0: μ = 50
H1: μ ≠ 50
Level of significance (a) = 0.01
Level of confidence (1-a) = 99%

3. According to NSCB statistics, the life expectancy of Filipino women is 70.1 years.
Suppose a random sample of 30 women in town B yields a mean of 72.5 years with a
population variance of 4.76 years, would you say that the life expectancy of the women in
town B is greater than the average?

a. Formulate the null and alternative hypothesis in sentence and in

symbol
H0: μ= 70.1
H1: μ > 70.1
Null hypothesis
-the life expectancy of the women in town b is equal or less than the
average
Alternative hypothesis
-The life expectancy of the women in town b is greater than the
average.
b. Determine what test statistic to use
12
Population standard deviation (σ ) is known, therefore, the test statistic
is z-test
c. Compute the test statistic

GIVEN: X =¿72.5, μ=70.1, σ =4.76 , n=¿30

FORMULA:
X −μ
z=

72.5− 70.1 2 .4
z= = =2.761
4.76 0.869
√ 30

4. Medical literature tells us that our blood is mainly composed of red and white corpuscles
and a normal human body must average 7250/mm3 of white blood cell counts. If a sample of
15 individuals chosen at random from a certain place has an average of 4850 /mm3 with a
standard deviation of 2500/ mm3 , would you say that the people in that place have low white
blood cell counts?

a. Formulate the null and alternative hypothesis in sentence and in

symbol

H0: μ= 7250
H1: μ < 7250
b. Determine what test statistic to use
Because σ is unknown and the population is normally distributed,
we use the t-test.
c. Compute the test statistic
Given: X =4850 , μ=¿7250, s=2500, n=15

X −μ
