Setenil de las Bodegas came from the

nihil - "seven times no" and bodegas,
meaning "warehouse"

Rif mountains by Jews and Moors fleeing
Spain.
There are many alleged reasons as to

why the town is blue. First, it represents

Second, blue shades repel mosquitoes.
Third, it is reminiscent of the
Mediterranean Sea.

Rjukan, home to 3,400 inhabitants, is

The town was founded by Sam Eyde in

the workers at a nearby hydroelectric
power plant.
In 2005, artist and town resident Martin
03 Andersen recreated the idea of giant

sun mirrors (solspiels) to capture the
maximum amount of sun rays.

fast Wifi, reliable electricity and even golf
courses, however, what it seems to be
lacking are people.

Longyearbyen is the world's northernmost
settlement and largest inhabited area of
Svalbard, Norway.

money, religion, and strife.

ISLOTE, COLOMBIA
It's a two-hour boat ride from Cartagena

to an island the size of two soccer fields,
where there are no roads and families
live in close quarters.
The population density of Santa Cruz del

Islote is 103,917 residents per square
kilometers. There is a legend that states
02 that two wandering fishermen founded

the island. According to locals, these
fishermen discovered that the island had
no mosquitoes and stayed.

JAPAN
Kamikatsu, Tokushima Prefecture, was the first
municipality in Japan to promulgate a Zero

Waste policy. Town residents sort waste into 45
types in 13 categories, and managed to
recycle 81% of all their refuse in 2016.
Kamikatsu’s Waste Station is a center for
interaction across the region.
Given that Kamikatsu’s 55 hamlets are

scattered across a wide area, it would have
been very expensive to purchase garbage
02 trucks to make pickups at all of these places,

and then to incinerate the collected waste.
Realizing this, in 1994 the local government
drafted a Recycling Town Project plan and ZERO WASTE TOWN
began brainstorming ways to reduce waste.

Christiania is a former military base that

becoming the neighborhood we know
today. In 1971, a group of hippies broke
