ACTIVITY 3. As a Public Schools District Supervisor (PSDS) in the Division of Muntinlupa, Dr.
Ferrer is in charge of the training programs for the continuous improvement of the teachers’
pedagogical practice. In one of the schools she had visited, Dr. Ferrer was challenged to answer
questions pertaining to flexible learning practices and digital literacy skills of the teachers. Kindly
attempt to answer the said questions accordingly.

Teacher Quency What can you say about the current flexible
learning practices in the Philippines
specifically in the basic education?

Dr. Ferrer I think it is imperative to consider the students

situation but also the teachers. We are all aware
that not everyone is as privileged as the other
that is why we provide the necessity that is to
give options where students and teachers can at
least exert effort amidst the global pandemic.
The modules have definitely given the students
a hard time to keep up with the lesson because
let’s admit it, our dear students do not pay
attention in reading their modules maybe a few
will but can you make sure that all are doing the
same thing? Of course not, our protocol should
be realistic than persuasive. In the end parents
or older siblings are the one doing the modules.

Teacher John Which of the digital literacies must be honed

among the learners in the flexible learning
environment? How?

Dr. Ferrer As I’ve seen, learners should be well equipped

in distinguishing information in the internet
and refraining from sharing fake news. This is
because as I’ve seen many students do not
understand the importance of Martial Law.
These students tend to oppose the published
curriculum just because they found a so called
‘source’ or let’s say ‘Tik-Tok’. Because this is
where commonly our students spend their time.

Teacher Dianne Which of the 4Cs of the 21st century skills play
an essential role in synchronous learning?
Why?

Dr. Ferrer Amidst the pandemic, it is important to have all

these but if I were to choose one it would be
‘Critical Thinking’, because firstly our
situation made us stay at home and with less
interaction with our teachers this will let us be
helpless or moreover lacking the required
knowledge to keep up with the lessons. That is
why we must resolve to self-study and this is
where critical thinking plays the big part in
supporting us in getting the important details in
a lesson.

Teacher Dianne Dr. Ferrer, I have been trying very my best to

become digitally literate. I am trying my best to
define the following terms such as coding,
cloud software and screencasting. What do
they mean?

Dr. Ferrer Well it is appreciated that you are trying your

best but let me enlighten you with your given
terms; coding in schools provide students with
the know-how to develop their own websites,
apps and computer software, cloud software
also known as cloud-based software or cloud
applications—is application software that’s
hosted in the cloud and that you access and use
via a web browser, a dedicated desktop client,
or an API that integrates with your desktop or
mobile operating system, and lastly, is a digital
video recording of your computer screen and
usually includes audio narration. Screencasts
are just one of many different types of
instructional videos. I hope you took note of
that.

Teacher Paula Which of the following platforms do you

consider effective in asynchronous learning:
Moodle, Google Classroom, Edmodo or
Schoology? Why?

Dr. Ferrer Google Classroom has been the most flexible

and used platform in asynchronous learning. As
I’ve seen, this platform provided teachers the
ability to send worksheets or home works that
are arranged and managed properly in the
student’s ‘to-do’ list. It also provides a virtual
classroom that students can go to and check for
announcements.

Teacher Paula What tips can you share among students and
teachers who are active in the social media?
Can you think of possibilities on how you can
use social networking sites as educational
tools? How can we appropriately utilize them
in my lessons?

Dr. Ferrer Always remember to put your complete name

in your social media therefore teachers or
fellow classmates won’t be confused when
looking for you. Also, we must keep in mind
that we can create GC’s that are reliable form
of communication. It can also be associated

with the classroom setup, but it is a necessity to

let this platform be the visual representation of
your persona. So please keep your social media
a very good example to all.

Teacher Christian What is the right mindset of a teacher in using

the digital tool?

Dr. Ferrer The right mindset for teachers in using digital

tools is that ‘be creative’. The students will
always have a hard time in answering their
modules so therefore always think of a way to
make the class interactive may it be
synchronous or asynchronous. There are many
apps and websites that provide learning
flexibility and activity that you just have to
harness and use in your class.
