“Kinetic Molecular Theory of Solid and Liquid”

Activity 1: Color Drop

1. The food color spreads into the water slowly. This happens because water consists of tiny
particles that are always in motion.
2. The rate of diffusion is faster in the hot water than in cold water. This is because hot
water consists of higher kinetic energy than cold water. As we learned that the higher
temperature is, the higher the kinetic energy which is directly proportional.
3. Kinetic Molecular Theory exists in almost everything around us and the speed of its
molecules depends on the temperature.
4. If the water and food color do not adhere to kinetic molecular theory, the food color will
fade, and will not spread as it should.

Activity 3: Describe me

Characteristics Solid Liquid

Intermolecular force Strong Weaker than solid
Shape Definite Indefinite
Volume Definite Definite
Density Higher density than liquid High density
Compressibility Virtually incompressible Slightly compressible
Arrangement of particles Tightly compact Slightly close
Motion of Molecules Fixed position Random
fluidity Does not flow Flow freely

Activity 4: Be a Science Detective

 As the water gets colder than 4°C, hydrogen bonds connecting different water molecules
adjust to keep the negatively charged oxygen atoms apart. Solid ice floats on liquid water
because it is 9% less dense than liquid water and when ice forms, it takes up about 9%
more space than it did as a liquid.

Reflection.
1. I learned that kinetic molecular theory plays a big part in the different phases of matter.
2. I enjoyed most doing the activities, especially activity 1.
3. I want to learn more on this topic to widen my knowledge regarding this subject.
