Bath shampoo

1. Verify first the agency policy and physician

 Because some agency require an order and if there’s need for bed shampoo

 Determine the bed time or when it is most convenient for the patient to do bed

shampoo discuss this with the client

2. Prepare all equipment and arrange them to the bed side

3. Introduce self and explain procedure.

 Ok mam, am althea your student nurse. I’ll be doing your bed shampoo so the

purpose of this is to clean the hair and scalp also and to promote blood circulation

and well-being of the pt. First is, we’re going to first assess the hair and scalp if

there’s anything that we need to be careful or need to do.

4. Wash hands and observe any appropriate measure control if there’s any.

 To prevent the spread of microorganism.

5. Also provide privacy

6. loosen the client pt. Gown

7. Fold the top sheet down to the middle and replace it with bath blanket.

8. Cover the chest with bath towel cross wise.

 For additional warmth

9. Remove the pillow and bring the patient head diagonal across the bed.

10. Protect pillow with rubber sheet and cover it also with bath towel.

 To prevent the pillow from getting wet.


11. Place a pillow under the pt. Shoulder

 This hyperextend the neck

12. Place inflated Kelly pad and under the pt head and place the pail on the floor supported

by the newspaper.

13. Comb the hair carefully

 To remove tangles.

14. Place wash cloth over the face covering the eyes.

15. Place a cotton balls on the ear canal

 This to prevent water from entering to the ear canal

16. First moisten the hair with lukewarm water to soften the hair

17. Apply shampoo on hair and scalp and massage using nail pads.

 To stimulate blood circulation.

18. Rinse with warm water and repeat until hair is thoroughly rinse.

19. Rinse with cool water

 To refresh the client

20. Drop the Kelly pad and squeeze the hair from excess water

21. Dry the hair in turban manner and position the pt in comfortable position

22. Then document the assessment.

 The client doesn’t have any lice or infection in the head.
